Summary: Los cuentos de una chica triste
Review: Este libro cuenta la historia de una cordera en la ciudad de gente con hombros anchos. Esperanza Cordero, la protagonista, nos dice de la historia triste de una hispanohablante la que enfrenta el desafío de su adolescencia de pobreza en el barrio de Chicago en Mango Street. Ella está desfeliz con todas las cosas: su casa, su pobreza y la vida triste del pueblo en este barrio. Es una historia como mil otras. En este sentido es un cuento más común, por lo tanto lo merece un dos.

Summary: I think her discriptions were so vivid
Review: I felt like I was in the book with her as one of her friends. She was so descriptive and spoke from real life. The way she described the trees in front of her house left me speachless and in complete aw of her talent. I was very emotional while reading the whole book because I could relate so much with the characters in the book. It was a fenominal book.

Summary: mesmerizing
Review: I have read this book aloud, in English and Spanish, to students grade 3-5 and they were all MESMERIZED by it. The reason is that they had never heard a book written in a child's voice, about everyday experiences similar to their own. The part about one of the girls being tempted to kiss the bum for a dollar got a great discussion going, with many students giving their opinion about what the girl should or should not do. Also, Elena Poniatowska did an amazing job of translating from English to Spanish. Nothing was lost, not even the voice. Poniatowska is an author in her own right, and therefore was able to achieve a perfect translation.

Summary: Man hater
Review: I loved reading this book because it was down-to-earth. The author doesn't try to go over the reader's head with big words and complicated meanings. Using the young girl as the narrator made it friendly and accessible. I'd like to point out that Poniatowska did an excellent job translating this book to Spanish from the English original. I tested Poniatowska's translation for my Spanish literature course. I translated her Spanish back to English and compared it to the English original by Cisneros. There was no loss in meaning. Poniatowska captured metaphors and subtleties in both languages very well. It is an excellent book to read in either language if someone has interest in learning about Hispanic-American culture.

Summary: Good practice and good message
Review: I originally read this book because I had to- in Spanish class, I had to prove my literacy. But after I read it once and got a spectacular grade on it, I read it again and noticed that there's a good message for those who haven't come from the most highly favored backgrounds in the neighborhood. It's written from a child's perspective and gave me a new outlook on what my own father must have gone through when he made the move from his country to the US. Props to Sandra in both languages.

Summary: Man hater
Review: I personally think that Sandra Cisneros wrote this book for the female audience. She seems to be some sort of a man hater. I guess she really does not like men in any kind of fasion. So for all you man haters this is a good book for you. Everyene else stay away. A better book would be the dictionary
