Summary: Enthrawling and entertaining - second only to Shogun.
Review: This fascinating story of the founding of Hong Kong is a Clavell masterpiece, next to Shogun, my favorite novel. Clavell once again shows his amazing talent in crafting an intriguing cast of characters, so easy to fall into step with.

Summary: Great!.............but........
Review: This book is fantastic and makes for a highly absorbing read despite it's lackluster ending. My main concern is that Clavell glosses over the immense human misery that was the opium trade and really doesnt do justice to the selfishness and cruelty exhibited by the people involved, many of whom are the ancestors of prominent families in England and American today(Just Say NO! LOL!). I'm not quite sure what this says about Clavell.

Summary: Proves yet again Clavell's extrordinairy ability
Review: I read the entire Asian saga when I was in grade 9 and they changed my outlook on life forever. His books are remarkable. Clavell has the uncanny ability to create a marvellous labryinth of intrigue.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Sizzle to fizzle.
Review: It's interesting that Clavell managed to write such a weak ending that didn't scuttle the rest of the book. This novel is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but the end leaves an empty feeling. It's as though he was winding up for a monster pitch then ends up rolling the ball across the plate. It's one hell of a wind up, though, and that makes the whole read worth while.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Anyone interested in Asian culture should check this book ou
Review: What an amazing book! The first in a string of losers I have read (recently) that I just can't put down. Clavell gives history a sugar coating that even a high school student could stomach! I'd just like to know how much is fact and how much is fiction!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great Authoring by one of the Great's!!!
Review: I don't need a thousand words. This is a must read for any fan of historical fiction. You have to read this book!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent book
Review: While Tai-pan is not as good as Shogun, it is still one of the finest books around. It provides an insight into the history of Hong Kong, and the British empire in the orient. It is also the story of a man's quest for money and personal glory.

What I especially liked about this novel, was the fact that Clavell did not use a sterotypical, saintly, knight in shining armor protaganist. The book's main character, Dirk Struan, is a power hungry, manipulative opium tycoon, who is willing to do anything to succeed.

I highy recomend this novel to anyone who has an interest in the time period, or to anyone who likes a good story.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Just like any Clavell novel. Once you start it your hooked.
Review: What a great story this is as are all of the Clavell books. The detailed plots that are intertwined make for story telling mastery that will totally captivate the reader. Watch out if you start this book on a week night because as it was with Shogun, you might just miss work tomorrow so you can finish this engrossing tale.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The best book ever made!
Review: I have read Shogun, Tai-Pan, Gai-Jin, and soon I'll read more. James Clavell rocks, and I love Tai-Pan. Dirk Struan is the greatest character ever.
