Summary: Perpetuates stigma and misconceptions of schizophrenia
Review: If you want an accurate historical account of schizophrenia read "A Beautiful Mind"
"Rose Garden" was written in 1964. So remember it has no relationship to modern treatment. For modern treatment read Torrey's Surviving Schizophrenia. Dr. Torry cites "Rose Garden" as one of the 15 worst books on Schizophrenia. Psychoanalysis was tried and discredited long ago for schizophrenia. But if you have a romantic historical vision of Psychoanalysis, you may enjoy this book in an entertaining way as long as you remember its pure fiction.

Hannah Green/Joanne Greenberg (she's too embarrassed to admit to writing this?) just had a little trouble adjusting and was hospitalized as a result. This was in the old days before HMOs mind you! So she was cured of her rebellion, common for the period and wrote a fictionalized account of it! She mixes Fact and Fiction to confuse the issue.

The movie from 1977 is even worse if you can believe. Without the author's prose, it's premise is just preposterous. The mental hospital that the book was written about (Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, MD) closed in the past year. That should give you a clue to the usefulness of this type of country club treatment for serious mental illness.

The worst part is that people may read or see this and think it has ANYTHING to do with real schizophrenia. And you wonder why there is still stigma and misconceptions? Look no farther!

Summary: Blown away.
Review: I read this book about 20 years ago. It still gives me strong feelings and regularly comes to mind. The manner in which the book leads the reader, into the confused mind of the girl, gives you shivers and brings tears of joy to your eyes. This book makes you look within and outside of yourself in relation to the world you live in. I have just recently recommended it to my 12 year old daughter. She is a very strong minded person and I feel this book would give her more understanding of the human mind. I have never read a book twice but if I can convince my daughter to read it, I will definitely read it again.

Summary: my FAVORITE book
Review: I am a fifteen-year-old high school student who has read many good books in her life. I'd recomend this book to anyone who thinks they can handle something which is very emotionally involved. Although the first chapter starts off a little slow, and I wasn't extremely drawn in by the girl's parents, the author's chartacters and writing style was incredible. If this doesn't make you think, I don't know what will. READ THIS BOOK ^_^

Summary: Great book!
Review: I, too, have read and re-read this book for 30 years. I recommended it to high school students (especially my AP Psychology students) over that time. It is a hypnotic, beau- tifully written account of a young woman trapped in the throes of schizophrenia. Her triumphant escape into reality is a breathless an adventure as I've ever read.

Summary: I LOVE this book
Review: I Love this book, i got my first copy at Goodwill, when i was just looking around. Then it turned out that i had the option of reading it for school, which i did. Now im writing an essay on it, at this moment actually. I think it is such an amazing description of how it is to be in a mental hospital, i myself have had the experience. So, i have one question...on my book, the author is Hannah Green... but the book they are selling is by Joanne Greenberg... are they the same person? Someone please help me out here, i know it is a kindof stupid question, but i dont want my teacher getting on me because of it. (We were supposed to pick a book from the library, but since i had a copy at home, i just read it, and it has a different author on the cover) But, i would HIGHLY recomend this book to anyone and everyone!

Summary: I would like to have the video but i can't seem to find.
Review: I've read the book and i truly loved it.The way it is written,it seems you can see and feel how Deborah feels. It also shows you the insight of mental illness and how it affects the person who has the illness and the things she have to go through to get well. the story tells you also of what exactly can cause mental sickness.not only that but the depthness of the mind which is limitless and how in itself it can control us. i'm actually looking for the video but i can't seem to get it anywhere.can anybody recommend anything or suggestions on where i can get the video?i'm from Singapore...i'm willing to get it overseas if possible.

Summary: Rose Garden Found
Review: As a writer myself and the playwright of several healing plays, I am in awe of what Hannah Green not only survived but was able to express in the most clear and perceptive description of the healing from mental illness process that I have ever read. And I am not one to use hyperbole.

For those who have never had to undergo any recovery process, I recommend this book as the most perceptive description of the "inside view." For those who may be battling their own "demons" hold this book with your life. It is the only one I have seen which depicts the human love between therapist and patient as the force that fosters recovery. It also validates the instinct to withdraw from a therapist one doesn't like. Most profoundly, Hannah Green's ability to use words with poetry and motion enhance the understanding of what is happening in the inner world of one who has "left" the world of reality.

An inspiring read for people dealing with mild neuroses as well as more serious disorders.
