Rating: Summary: boring Review: I never finished this book, but at the rate it was going, it wreaks!
Rating: Summary: Awful writing, great story Review: I hate to admit it, but I loved this book. Don't ask me why. The writing was truly awful and full of not-very-convincing aphorisms. In fact, the whole book could have been a cliche except for the fact that somehow, somewhere, the story made a lot of sense. It's so believable I actually thought the characters were real. Waller may not be a great writer, but the story, once you get past the cliches, is told with compassion and intelligence.
Rating: Summary: In his dreams! Review: Thank God I'm selective when it comes to my own cash. This book was lent to me by a 35+ y.o. single friend that said she cried and cried. I was really reluctant to read it but did after some prodding. Oh, gag me. A slob with a filthy trashed-out truck and dirty jeans just wouldn't do it for me. Not even on a whim. No substance to the story just another air-head woman forgetting about what's important in life.
Rating: Summary: Cherishing the bitter-sweet Review: When I almost had an affair 3 years ago, my husband and I went into marriage counseling. The therapist suggested I read Bridges. I related to so many levels within the story, I couldn't believe it. I cried so much while reading Bridges, because I realized I was faced with the same decision as Francesca Johnson. To run with your passionate feelings or do what society expects of you.
Rating: Summary: Romance has never been so sweet. Review: The story is short to the point and filled with emotions. You can actually put yourself in Francesca's place .The passion, heartache and love is felt throughout each page. For everyone who wants to remember that one true love.
Rating: Summary: Litmus test for recommendations from friends. Review: This book was passed around quickly and eagerly between the women in my workplace, and praised by most as "One of the best books ever written". When it was my turn, it was handed to me reverentially. Yes, it kept me up most of the night! But not reading -- I persisted through 30 pages or so, only because I cared about the friends who had recommended it so highly -- rather, I stayed awake for a long time trying to figure out what to tell my buddies. I wanted to say that it was sappy, that it reeked of a Mad magazine parody, that it was probably written by a college student as a thesis on the gullibility and poor taste of the American book-buying public -- but how to say that without insulting my friends? I settled for just saying that I hated it and couldn't even finish it. The only good thing I can say about this book is that it makes you reexamine the old gang! I still have respect for their opinions on things other than reading matter, but even had to rethink that one. Scary.
Rating: Summary: Love as intimacy, rather than sex(for a change!) Review: For me this book was about intimacy, yearning and the realisation that decisions made in an instant have implications that last a lifetime. A novel that helps you relive the beauty in your own life will always be a success. For those that don't get it, perhaps that is the best metaphor for their own lives - sadly!
Rating: Summary: Live the moment, cherish the memories! Review: This love story captures the true essence of living for the moments and cherishing the memories. As you read this novel you live and relive the feelings of love by commitment and love by anticipation. It affirms the reality of loving two men who fulfilled entirely different needs, without negating either relationship. And it was all by chance.... You must read this book...It is my absolute favorite!
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: Not the worst book I've ever read, but certainly one of the most disappointing! I'm crazy about a good love story, but this one wasn't it! I thought the book looked great, people had told me it was a great love story, I was set for a good read. What a let down! It wasn't particularly well written and the story was silly, yet took itself so seriously. To take a trite little story and treat it like it was the most profound thing since Socrates-- PLEASE! (One thing in its favor-- at least it was short!
Rating: Summary: Excellent primer to husbands who take their wife for granted Review: Robert Waller in a very few words brings home the fact that we husbands should never take our wives for granted. If husbands show their wife that he cares about her, he is romanic each day, touches her regularly, spends some time each day listening to her, and tells her he loves her and is an example for their children so that they have love and respect for their mother, then all of the Robert Kincades in the world can stop by and the wife will pay no attention to them. Waller shows us through R Kincade how we should treat our wives. I had a dream shortly after reading Bridges, I dreamed my wife was having an affair with someone else. It was a sur-real dream. They were making love suspended in space and rotating in space. I was mad and ready to kill the guy until I saw his face and discovered the "lover" was me. It was the me I had promised to be when I courted my wife and the way I treated her during our early marriage. I was humbled. I have tried to be a more caring husband ever since. Furthermore, I have tried to get this message across to my married son and two son-in-laws. One of them doesn't get it...yet! I'm still trying. My wife and I visited Roseman bridge this spring on our way home from the Mayo Clinic where we were trying to solve the many health problems of my wife, Priscilla. I am a professional photographer/farmer, I know several NG photographers and know how carsmatic they can be, and my name is also Robert. I relived the story as I photographed my Francisa (Priscilla) on the Roseman bridge. Priscilla has finally felt like reading Bridges. She has been deeply moved and shares my strong feeling for Robert Waller's way of expressing such deep loving and caring feelings. I send my "haven't got it yet" son-in-law computer banners, warning that "Robert Kincade III is in your neighborhood. Lock up your wife because he knows all of the words you used to make my daughter fall in love with you and promises that you made that you haven't kept, getting her to marry you. He knows how to be the man you once were and all he has to do is be the way you used to be. He'll get your wife if he ever comes to your house! Beware!"
I'm not a big book reader but I have read Bridges three times. The movie was unable to convey the warmth of Wallers beautiful words that the characters were thinking like the book was able to do. The movie had to slip in the "F" word that I don't remember reading in the book.
I wish I could write like Robert Waller. Thanks for this opportunity to express my feelings.
