Rating: Summary: A wonderful book you'll treasure forever Review: Only once in a while does a novel come along that seems to re-define an entire genre, and The Green is just that: sports-oriented novels to come are going to be compared to this one. But don't think of it as a golf story - it's simply great fiction, and stands with any modern novel for the power of its imagery, its deft manipulation of language, and what it says about the human condition. It's not an exaggeration to say that this is Pulitzer-class writing.
Rating: Summary: I know who Troon McAllister really is Review: The quote in the beginning and author photo credit are dead giveaways - McAllister is really Lee Gruenfeld. That doesn't surprise me, because the writing is so terrific, and you alwayslearn something when you read one of his books, but why did he use a pseudonym? Maybe because it's so different from his serious books. But I loved The Green and hope "Troon" writes more like it.
Rating: Summary: As good as it gets Review: This is some of the most powerful, compelling writing I've ever read. Don't let this one pass you by.
Rating: Summary: Funny, poignant, haunting, even profound Review: This is the kind of book you devour in one gulp even as you hope it will never end. I recommend it to everyone. The language is a bit salty for young children but, other than that, The Green manages to soar without any sex or violence. It's just about people being people, but they're some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet in a book.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous - highest recommendation I can give Review: We don't often hear a humorous book be considered great literature, but this one breaks that convention. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Rating: Summary: One of the best ever Review: A perfect blend of plot, characters, and atmosphere, all beautifully paced and memorably written. I adored this book, and it's not often I say that.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I just returned to England from a working vacation in the States, and read this book on the plane on the way home. It was an all-night flight and I never got to sleep because I couldn't make myself stop reading. I can't recommend this book highly enough, but I discovered that it isn't available here. I hope that changes soon, as shipping charges overseas are quite dear.
Rating: Summary: Best I've read in a long time Review: Boy, what a book! And I don't even like golf, or at least i didn't think I did, because I didn't know anything aboutit. But I'll never be able to think about it, or a lot of other things besides, the same way again. I wrecked a whole day because i couldn't stop reading this book, and then I couldn't stop thinking about it. It's a rare treat.
Rating: Summary: If you love the game, you'll love this book. Review: The author gives us so many things to enjoy in this wonderful fictional tale that is as real to life as the game it portrays. The plot is rich and complex and keeps you in suspense even after the final match has been decided. The characters are wonderfully drawn and provide a rare insight to this most challenging of games being played at its highest level. The messages are many but none so well-crafted as the central theme of integrity which continually provides gut-wrenching twists and turns for Al Bellamy- the story teller. Even the title provides us with opportunity to explore several possible tie-ins as we traverse the book. In addition to the fun of a great golfing saga, the reader will find woven throughout the fabric of this tale, a treasure-chest of wonderful golfing wisdom. You get some real honest-to-goodness insights you can apply to your own game. It takes us inside the world of the professional golfer where few of us are priviledged to go and then turns around and lets us feel right at home when the pros do a hilarious locker-room golfing cliche` fest.As a lifetime golf zealot, I loved this book and will insist all my playing partners get a copy for their collection of must-read golf books.
Rating: Summary: Sure to become a classic Review: Just wonderful - a very rare treat that combines all the elements of a great novel except that it's also funny as hell. I only wish it had been twice as long.
