Rating: Summary: This tale will not let your mind set still Review: Tom Robbins has quickly become one of my favorite writers. This story is captivating, thought provoking and quite original. His ability to weave factual data throughout the story forces you to think "what if"? Robbins' characters are always unique, and I have to admit, I was sad to get to the end of this tale. There are many things in life I will not look at the same after reading this story, including red heads, Camel cigarettes, and blackberries. If you like Tom Robbins, you will love this book. EJ
Rating: Summary: Redhead Special! Review: Tom Robbins is a very seductive writer. I picked up the book and rather begrudgingly let him suck me into the absurd world which he created. After the second day, I was hooked. He is that rare type of writer who doesn't need to hide behind needlessly complicated language in order to explore man's deeper issues. He is so disarming that the reader barely notices the physic intrusion. A must read for younger writers, especially if you are a redhead.
Rating: Summary: i would give it a zero if i could Review: this is one of the (if not the) most self-indulgent, poorly written books i have ever read, and i've done a lot of reading. if you have any interest in intelligent reading, and not pop-lit then avoid this book at all cost.
Rating: Summary: Addicted to Robbins Cigarettes Review: As my first Tom Robbins book, I believe Still Life has lived up to the hype surrounding the author. I was intrigued by the characters, and appreciated his post-modern approach to writing. Imaginative and emotional; witty and engaging, I would recommend this book to all sort of readers. It is a fantastic book to own, since it can be read over and over.
Rating: Summary: i would give it ten if i could Review: this was my first tom robbins book and it has set such a high standard that his other books seem to fail after "still life". it is so well written i could actually see and smell what was going on. the visions and ideas pumped me to develop my own versions in my head. apart from a wonderfully human story about things that will never ever happen in real life, this book is the bible of "penny philosophy" (in the good sense of the words): i learned a lot about myself, culture, civilization on nearly every page. the language is exquisite: great puns, sayings, descriptions... the ideas are perfect: wild enough to take you on a fantastic journey while human enough to understand that that journey is inside all of us. the characters are wonderful: royalty, cia, terrorists, arabs, mystics, aliens...and a cigarette box (???!!!). buy this book now and get a few copies for your friends (the ones you really like).
Rating: Summary: If only I had a Remington SL3 Review: Still Life With Woodpecker was my first time reading Tom Robbins. It took me a while to get used to his style, but I loved it by the time I was finished with the book. The chracters are zany, but real and easy to relate to. The situations are crazy, but the plot all falls into place in the ending. I became engrossed, slipping into his world of princesses, aliens and outlaws (perhaps I slipped into the Camel pack). I highly recommend this book to people looking for an escape from reality, but want to walk away having learned something new.
Rating: Summary: This is good? Review: A self-absored book...I don't know that I'd call Tom Robbins a genius...most of the images and ideas are weak...and written in a kind of sloppy way...this book is not funny... it tries to be...and it fails miserably...a good book is written with some sensuality of which this has nothing of...I'd say it's more boring than it is interesting...and not any better than those overwrought Dave Barry stories.
Rating: Summary: Only Tom Robbins Review: Only Tom Robbins could construct a story about aliens, redheads, and a pack of Camel cigarettes, and actually make it work. It is a story about being an outlaw (and not a criminal, there is a difference), the truth about redheads, and love. And it all takes place inside a pack of camel cigarettes, more or less. Traveling down the pages, the pieces to a very intricate, magical puzzle come together, until, at the end, it all makes sense. No web has been more cleverly spun than how Robbins created this work.
Rating: Summary: a classic Review: I have to admit that when I first started reading "Still Life with Woodpecker," I had my doubts about whether I'd stick it out. I was focusing too much on the absurdity of the premise, but then I gave myself over to it, or it took me over, I should say. I found myself totally absorbed in it. It's funny, heart-warming, callous, cynical, articulate, intelligent, painfully accurate at times, and always engaging. I couldn't put it down, and when I'd finished reading it, I was a bit sad that the journey was over. Robbins writing style is refreshing and his insights profound. The book struck a real chord in me, and even now, it still resonates. I will often go back to the ending and re-read it, and it never loses its potency. This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I can't recommend it enough.
Rating: Summary: How do you make love stay? Review: My girlfriend suggested this book to me, and man am I glad she did. This is one of those books that doesn't change the way you look at certain things, but just skews them a bit. I can't look at a pack of camel cigarettes the same way. I feel deep into this story without even really knowing it. Next thing I knew, I was in a story that seemed so close, so intimate. Let me tell you, it's a great feeling. Superb story, superb writing.
