Summary: DISAPPOINTING CONCLUSION
Review: While somewhat of a struggle to get into the story, once I was in I was hooked. Yeah, Davenport is a shameless womanizer -- and a cop w/ few scruples. But I still went along, hoping for twists and turns and a tantalizing conclusion. Unfortunately, the work ran out of gas leaving me saying, 'OK, that's it?' Sandford could learn from David Baldacci and John Katzenbach for keeping his stories exciting till the very end. Thumbs down.

Summary: I can't believe I spent money on this tripe
Review: So I read all the reviews here and was eagerly looking forward to reading a new author in a genre I enjoy -- thriller/crime.

Wow, was I ever let down.

First of all I found it incredibly hard to like the main character Lucas Davenport, particularly after he is portrayed as having absolutely no scruples -- from planting evidence (he's a cop!) because he can't find any other way to nab the killer, to setting up two women to be the victim of the killer so that he can catch the guy in the act.

What kind of police work IS this? He breaks the law at every turn, and seemingly doesn't have a conscious about doing that, leaving you feeling that his character is very two dimensional -- of little substance.

I know this is supposed to relate some "real life" police activity, but in most thriller books I've read, the main character has at least SOME redeeming qualities.

Lucas Davenport is out for himself. Period. I could find nothing to like about him, and that made the book tedious to read. I suspect that between his womanizing attributes and his tough-guy law-breaking ways, this book is based solely on the author's own fantasies.

Do yourself a favor, skip this book.

Summary: Kept me in the dark
Review: I chose to read this book for a school project. I ended up really enjoying it and wanting to read the rest of the "prey" series. The characters and the plot made me not want to put the book down. Lucas Davenport(the detective) was very charming and his character was very well thought out. What scared me the most was the killer who called himself maddog, was a lawyer, who everyone knew. He was a normal guy to the outside world. It really shocked me when the author mentioned Duluth MN because it just proves that it can happen anywhere, and you shouldn't trust people that may look like they have a good life and they seem normal. I think the ending could've been better if the killer would've dissappeared and it left you in suspence as to what happened to him, then have him pop up in a following novel.

Summary: Great book, but lacking in character
Review: I enjoyed this book to the end, but Davenport is a character that needs some serious adjustments. His lifestyle is a bit too much, and his womanizing does take away both the reality of the character and the understanding of his nature. I have to give Sanford credit for trying to create someone who is a combination of Charles Bronson, Casanova, and Gary Gygax. I could of never come up with that, but then again I could of tried and came up with someone as equally unrealistic. He writes an excellent story, but I wish he could do without Lucas Davenport. I gave the book two stars, and an extra one because it takes place in my home town.

Summary: A story of a crazy man
Review: After reading "Rules of Prey" by John Sandford. I have never heard of a man more crazier then the man in this book. They way he has killed many women and has gotten away with it is incrediable to me. One of the things that scarred me was that the setting of the story was in Minnesota and Duluth, Minnesota is where I reside, and to have The author mention Duluth, MN in his book it made me be aware that there are people out in the world as secretly crazy as the man in this story. Over all the book got me thinking that their is people out in the world that have problems and like to take them out by killing and as a women reading the book it is very upsetting to know that we can be easily taken advantage of. The story was strange, yet it was rather awakening to me.

Summary: Two thumbs up !
Review: John Sandford is the bomb (uhm, that's a good thing by the way) ! Start with RULES OF PREY and prepare yourself for an incredible journey of reading with all of the PREY novels featuring Lucas Davenport. I found myself on business in Minneapolis and was hoping I'd get to meet Lucas. Thanks John Camp !

Summary: Prey for Davenport
Review: While reading this book I kept waiting to get to the part that would scare me so much I would "get out of bed and go downstairs to make sure the front door was locked." Never happened, all I got was annoyed. I think Lucas Davenport is a total creep and did it bother anyone else that his pregnant girlfriend drank wine and beer?

Summary: Glad I hooked up with this new author!
Review: As in Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta heroine, it is a pleasure to follow Lucas Davenport throughout the prey series. Sandford has a knack for getting into the psyche of not just the villain, but the hero. Great read, great series!

Summary: Just The Beggining . . .
Review: This is the first of many John Sandford books I have read. The chapters ping-pong between detective Lucas Davenport and the killers mind. Sometimes you can't tell who's mind you're in! Very suspensefull and it really keeps you interested. I would recommend this book to people who like series books. The prey series in general is all suspensful and thought provoking.

Summary: Evil villian and a oversexed, belligerent detective
Review: Lucas Davenport is smarmy enough to get down and dirty with the worst villians. Wish Sanford had explained Vuillon's past and what brought him to Minneapolis from Texas. Had Louis killed elsewhere? Lucas' relationships are pretty shallow but somehow he comes across as caring for his women friends. His relationship with the nun is interesting and should be developed more. All around I liked this book but was a little disappointed in the ending.
