Rating: Summary: Excellent novel Review: Snow Falling is a great read which I would recommend to just about anyone. A good plot, fabulous writing, and superb characters make this one memorable. In addition, I was actually holding my breath nearing the end of the novel, a part which is tinged with a very nice suspensful build. The movie looks like it will be good, but I highly recommend reading this very worthy novel first so that you don't miss out on any of the nice, quiet pleasures to be found in it.
Rating: Summary: Hauntingly Beautiful Review: It is impossible to describe the things this book makes a person feel. David Guterson may be one of the best authors at work today. Hatsue and Ishmael's characters seem so real, they could be your next door neighbor. This book should be read by anyone who enjoys real good descriptions and exciting plot twists. To sum it all up, I think that people should read this book, if their viewpoint differs from mine that's too bad, but I know there are more people that will agree with me rather than disagree
Rating: Summary: A matter of region Review: It is interesting to see that most of the negative comments were written by New Yorkers and people from Massachussetts. Should that mean that educated people from that side of the country have developed a more acute critical mind? Well, for sure, they are far more down-to-earth and skeptical, and the beauty of the descriptions in Snow Falling on Cedars didn't touch them as it did to more sensitive readers. Nonetheless, good book or not, it has given way to a marvelous film. For that, credit needs be given to the author, and praise, to the film producer.

Rating: Summary: Sexist's, Prejudiced Viewpoint Against Asian Women Review: I started reading this book, recommended by my acqauintance who thought I would definitely like this book because I am a Japanese-American woman. On the contrary, I could not stand his sexist's, prejudiced viewpoint againt Asian women and could not finish reading this book. Whenever Hatsue appears in the scene, it is about SEX; as if her only role in the book is to provide SEX. This becomes even more insulting when the book's disguice is a serious, historically-based, well-planned detective. I simply hope that this Gusterson's book will not reinforce some shallow men's conviction that Asian women are "easy."
Rating: Summary: Snow Falling on Cedars was the most amazing novel I've read. Review: I've read so many books throughout my studies, however none has captured my attention and heart as this one. From the moment I picked it up, I did not want to put it down. David Guterson definitely has a way with words. The story makes you feel compassion for the Japanese and the suffering they went through. There's definitely a twist in the end that's superb. This was one of the greatest books of all time.
Rating: Summary: Great Eye Opener Review: I read this book with a heavy heart. I was asked to read it by a friend. I lost my dad in Vietnam and I've had a prejudice against Asian-Americans. But, this book went a long way in showing me how wrong I am to be so quick to judge someone. The descriptions of the interment camp, and the thoughts & feelings of the characters on being judged just because of their heritage was amazing. I didn't realize that I fit into the 'judger' catagory until I finished the book. I came to like the Japanese-Americans characters a great deal. I've opened my eyes to the world around me, and I'm trying to be more open-minded in my life. Thank you, Mr. Guterson.
Rating: Summary: A mystery to the end with a bit of romance and History. Review: A Japanese American is on trial for the murder of a local fisherman in a town still dealing with memories of World War II. The reporter covering the case has to deal with his lingering feelings for the accuses wife. Memories of a childhood romance between a white boy and Japanese girl are relived. The book includes romance, history and a mystery which is never certain until the very end.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS OF THE DECADE Review: I'm gonna make this short and sweet before stupid AOL logs me off again. I normally read the classics because I find most modern novels to be uninteresting. The only reason I read Snow Falling on Cedars is because a co-worker was reading it and suggested I read it too. I'm glad she did. This is one of the best novels of the decade--right up there with The Unconsoled, Remains of the Day, The English Patient and The Joy Luck Club. In many ways Snow Falling on Cedars reminded me of Moby Dick: the elements of good and evil in our society and within ourselves, and how we as a community of people and individuals learn to deal with that good and evil (e.g., racism and tormented love). If you want to read a book that will stir your imagination and give you something to think about, I highly recommend Snow Falling on Cedars.
Rating: Summary: Differrent Review: I was actually forced to read this in my English class, and initially thought it was dull. After sometime I went back to read it over, and it is now one of my all time favorite books. Its great, now I have to see the movie!
