Rating: Summary: Work of Literary Merit for College Student Review: Snow Falling On Cedars was chosen by my junior college as this semesters work of literary merit. At first I was not encouraged too much because court room scenes don't interest me. But as I got into the book, I realized it was so much more, there is something for everyone in this book. I am excited about the movie coming out, and I truly hope they stick to the original intent of the story. The one theme that appealed to me was the different love stories, and how none of them were typical fairy tale loves. If anyone that has read this book would like to comment to me personally on this subject it would be greatly appreaciated. Of course along with this book being the assigned reading for the english department, an essay is also expected. So like I said, if anyone is willing to share with me their insights about this book, they can email me at malachite32@hotmail.com, thankyou, and for everyone else, go out and buy this book, you will not regret it!!!
Rating: Summary: Absolutly Amazing Review: This book is a master piece. No wonder it has won so many awards. I will admit it does not immediatly grab the readers attention but somehow it manages to mesmerize the reader. You just can't put it down. The characters enter your everyday life. This was the first book I read that made me sad to think it was over!!
Rating: Summary: A Good Book Review: This book was very interesting and worth while but it was a bit slow paced for me. I found many portions of the book unnecessary and overly descriptive. Overall, the book is well-written and deserves credit.
Rating: Summary: It is a wonderful novel, if it is read to the end. Review: The book is exceptionally well written. It is a gripping reality of what Americans put the Japanese American people through during, and even after, World War II. At the same time it tells of a forbidden romance between two people of different race, and of a trial that holds a Japanese American man accused of murder. If you are planning on reading this, read it through to the very end. It does have a few uninteresting points, but as soon as you reach about half way through the book it gets really good.
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: This is an excellent written book with many hidden messages.....Be sure to find them!
Rating: Summary: A Good Read... but too much of a Who Dunnit... Review: This novel is a combination of murder mystery, courtroom drama, historical perspective on racism in post World War II america and a love story all at the same time. It is a wonderful non-linear novel in that it takes its reader back and forth in time effortlessly and smoothly. Its drawback is that in pursuing so many different but yet related angles to the same story, it seems to wind up as a "Who Dunnit" book which neatly wraps up when the murder is solved.
Rating: Summary: Typical racial law novel Review: The book had a common theme. A trial over the murder of a well liked man in a small town with racial prejudices and historical accuracy. Yes. It did teach something, but not something new and thought provoking. I was required to read this book for english, and I have to ask, for what?
Rating: Summary: Why can't we give a book zero stars? Review: Just for fun, I just scanned the reviews here; there have been quite a few since I first weighed in (Feb. 18, 1997, below) with the first "negative" review on these pages. I find it distressing that so many people couldn't see through this flat piece of writing, with its tedious politically-correct theme and unoriginality (tip: go read "To Kill a Mockingbird", people). From my brief scan, I can see that quite a few semi-literate schoolteachers have been assigning this book to their students (tip: assign them "To Kill a Mockingbird" instead; it's a much better book). Now I hear that a film is being made--this is unsurprising, and I expect it will be quite a popular one (tip: go see the film "To Kill a Mockingbird" first, people). What has been even more distressing, however, is the critical response to this lifeless, repetitious, preachy book and the fact that it received awards. If you must read this book, borrow it; I can't stand the thought of making this plagiarist Guterson any wealthier...
Rating: Summary: Snow Falling On Cedars taught me a ton about prejudiceness. Review: I was recently assigned to read a novel of my choice. When I first recieved the assignment, I thought that it would just eb another boring language arts project. Little did I know that when reading this novel, it taught me a lot about life in general. When Kabou was arrested mostly because of his race, it showed me that people can be so heartless, when someone is to blame.
Rating: Summary: A VERY ENGAGING AND POIGNANT NOVEL Review: I came across this book in yr 10 when my English teacher recommend it to one of the smarty pants in our class not wanting to be left out I began to read it too.The first four chapters was so tedious I was ready to abandon it, but reminded my self of it's good reviews and thus persevered. And boy was I glad I did, I could not put this novel down, and read it in one big chunk. Snow Falling on Cedars is one of the most humane and beautifully written novel I have ever read. It doesnt only deliver you a good story but a history lesson as well. Everyone of us at some point has experienced unrequited love, injustice, racism and guterson addresses all of these and many other relevant issues. Ok, ok so the ending was a let down I agree, but name a book that is perfect, I'm a bookworm by the way and I cannot recall any. Even to kill a mockingbird have some flaws it wasn't particularly thrilling and the prose was nothing compared to this novel, and anyway isn't this the authors first novel, so give the guy a break. I don't care I love this book despite of what others says, it's good points certainly overshadows it's flaws. And by the way my opinion on this book is my own I wasn't influenced by the so called"emperors new clothes" I enjoyed it becuase of its qualities. Now that I'm a senior we have to study this novel and I actually can't wait to read it for the second time.
