Rating: Summary: What is the point of reading this? Review: How could someone write about so many themes and not take the time to delve into them? There's love and war and racism and countless others in the novel, and yet no real connection with life in the '50s or even life today. The reader cannot connect with the characters and so cannot be involved in the story. I heard lots of wonderful reviews for this novel, but when it comes down to it, it is not what a high school junior should be forced to read. How could the book end like this? All the character description (pages upon pages) just to end in 3 little pages. And is the last line supposed to change the whole novel? Simply a waste of time.
Rating: Summary: blah, blah, blah Review: I was draw to this book because it is set near where I live. The descriptions were long winded. I found myself skimming through most of them. I only finished it because I wanted to find out who-done-it. The end. END
Rating: Summary: What Happened to the Plot? Review: Darned interesting story line. The problem is that the exciting climax takes only three pages at the very end of the book. The rest of the book is spent setting up the mood with vivid poetic imagery. The author spends hundreds of pages setting up the story and three pages finishing it. It's almost like falling off a cliff when you get to the end of the book.
Rating: Summary: My Review of a Great Book Review: Snow Falling on Cedars was a compelling story about a murder, and the reaction the town had of it, but it was also much more than that. It showed the effect that WWII had on their lives. There was a couple too many sex scenes in this book though. I'm 13 now, but I started reading this when I was in 4th grade. I couldn't handle it then but I can now, and its one of my favorite books. Very gripping, and hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: Mockingbird Clone! Review: This book, while combining a masterful account of the Northwest in the mid 1950's, Is merely a pitiful attempt to repluck the heart strings that had been strummed by 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. At best, this novel shows while the duplication of great works is possible, recreation is beyond reach.
Rating: Summary: Reviewed by me for the college newspaper Review: Sussex County Community College in Newton, New Jersey selected David Guterson's "Snow Falling on Cedars" as this years college novel. The reader looks for a murderer, is reminded of World War II prejudices between Japanese and Americans, finds a love ripped apart by this prejudice and witnesses a reporter's heart righting a wrong. Guterson's fault seems to be his over-attention to detail at times. He gets so impressed with his poetic prose that he forgets that the reader needs a story to grab onto. Finding the symbolism is more enjoyable than finding the murderer. To simply read this novel is not enough. It requires dissecting thought. The story is filled with symbolic characters and references. Guterson is an author who is finally bringing back style and structure to literature. He is unique only if compared to pulp fiction novelists of today and takes the reader back to classic literature. David Guterson has a way to go, but he's headed in the right direction. A perfect college study.
Rating: Summary: superb! the kind of book we were waiting for! Review: this story has a liveliness which gripped me. lots of details and great characters (neld gudmundsen).
Rating: Summary: One of the best novels I have read this decade. Review: Guterson's description of one man's experience of racial prejudice was compelling.
Rating: Summary: This is a book that I found compelling and quite informative Review: At first I thought that the book was going to be nothing but a fictional interpretation of a court case. As I read further, I discovered a deeper side, one that contained predjudice. This book dealt with issues containing love, murder, loss of love, and predjudice. It was like the further I read, the more in depth the subject matter was. I enjoyed this book, because it contained many themes and plots. This is one book that will be added to my favorite of all times.
Rating: Summary: KUDOS GUTTERSON- You have HOPE! Review: i want to start off congradulating Gutterson on a well written and intresting story. I give it a 6 because it might not be as polished as other bestsellers but he has prospect. He did have an excess of detail in some scenes. I lot of instanmacy that could cut the book back by 100 pages. An intresting twist but we don't care about the love afair, only the trial.
