Summary: A WONDERFUL FEEL-GOOD READ
Review: This book may be a little cheesy, but I couldn't put it down once I got into it. It is definitely a confidence-boosting novel.

Summary: A good book for a hard day
Review: I had a hard day at work and decided I need to take a bath and unwind so I went through my books and saw Jemima J. so I decided to take it to read while soaking. What a mistake. I couldn't put it down, I was so pruny, the bubbles were gone, the water was turning cold, yet I continued to turn the pages. I got almost to the halfway point when I decided to get out of the tub and the rough day at work was far behind me. I loved the transformation of heavy Jemima J to the slim JJ. Yes, it was predictable but it was a good book and it is nice to read something light and fun every once in awhile.

Summary: Great book for anyone who's insecure about their weight...
Review: I have to admit I loved this book. As someone who is overweight I totally related to Jemima in the first chapter. She is a very relatable character that most women should be able to relate to in some form or fashion. My only problem with it is that the ending is sort of abrupt and a bit questioning about what is really important to catching the right guy... looks or personality? But still I did very much enjoy this. The first chapter hooked me and i couldn't put it down. This is a book for anyone who's ever thought they were "too fat."

Summary: No depth, but would be a great beach book...
Review: If you are strictly looking for an entertaining read, Jemima J fits the bill. The writing is tight and witty without being overtly cheesy or dramatic, and an author with less talent could have turned this story into a boring Jackie Collins-type rehash. Issues of weight and body image are addressed, and the author uses the familiar ugly-ducking-to-swan theme, but adds twists within the plot to keep the story interesting. During my reading, Wally Lamb's wonderful book She's Come Undone kept coming to mind; if you want a story that documents an overweight girl's transformation with more depth and more believeable characters...but for what it's worth, Jemima J is fun to read.

Summary: When you've had enough of the heavy stuff...
Review: I loved this book. Totally absorbing, it's like having a chat with your mates, leaving you feeling better about yourself every time you pick it up. It is not a literary masterpiece but rather a great book to read at the beach or on the train to work. I reccommend it, and Jane Green's other novels to everyone who loves a heartwarming and hilariously funny read, that explores the world of self-image and relationships.

Summary: Bleeck!
Review: It wouldn't let me give NO STARS!

Ugh! The worst book I've ever read! What a waste of time. I agree with the previous reviewer who thought it sounded like she was a shut-in playing with Barbie dolls!

I recommend it, however, as inspiration if you want to be published...if Jane Green can...YOU CAN TOO!!!

i want my money back!

Summary: If you liked Naomi Campbell's ghostwritten "Swan" ...
Review: This was perhaps the worst book I've ever read in my life. It occurred to me that the author is either a lifelong shut-in or 12-year-old girl recording the dialogs between her Barbie dolls.

Lest you think I'm a bad sport with no sense for the whimsical, I do recommend it. But read it for comedic value only (and then do it at your own risk).

Summary: predictable romantic-comedy-type book
Review: I always find it amusing, how so many people complain about novels & movies having happy, hollywood-type endings.Haven't all these people heard the saying-- "beware what you wish for"? Well, just for one moment, imagine a light, romantic-comedy-type book / movie with an UNHAPPY ending. It would feel like you don't get what you payed for, wouldn't it? So I disagree with everyone complaining about "Jemima J" having a clear-cut, predictable ending. What did you expect for god's sake? her ending up overweight again (as would almost certainly happen in real life, considering the huge amount of weight she lost in only 3 months)--overweight, alone & without "the man"? Well, that simply would never happen in this type of novel, & that's what we buy into when we buy these books.

Apart from the big "happy ending" issue who everyone seems to be whining about these days..."Jemima J" was almost all I expected it to be. A lighthearted, totally unreal yet addictive & fun to read book. I agree though with most of the previous reviewers who pointed out that the weight issue was not treated as well as it could have been. Ok, being unrealistic is normal in a novel such as this...but this much? Going to LA to meet someone you met over the internet, & him being as perfect as a magazine photo? Please! Losing so much weight & feeling completely energetic & not looking pale & sick because of the extreme diet? Please again!! Recovering from the (almost certainly existing) eating disorder instantaneously? Come on...As for getting the man of her dreams when thin, I guess that fits into the happy ending thing I mentioned before: it was part of the things I expected.

On the other hand, it IS true (although many other readers seem to disagree) that how we look is quite important, if only because it is a reflection of our state of mind & of course of our health. I'm not saying that being extremely thin is the only way to look good, but being extremely overweight certainly doesn't help, either health-wise or in the way we look. And anyway...this book was not an eating disorder psychology book, but a simple novel, with a simple story & a simple ending to the story in the end. What I mean is that I found it unbelievable that some readers found this book "offensive" to all women etc...sure, it was unrealistic & over-the-top. But it's also unrealistic to deny the fact that being seriously overweight involves some health isses, which shouldn't be overlooked...

All in all, the book was predictable & kind of fun to read, but "Mr Maybe" (for example) by the same author is much better. And as for all the angry reviews...well, what did you expect when buying "Jemima J"? A treatise on eating disorders? It's just a fun to read book, made for the beach....

Summary: Not your basic Bridget wanna-be.
Review: Very entertaining and engrossing, this book provides a few hours of mindless fun. If you are trying to lose weight, definately read this. If you want to lose weight, it is a good book to get you motivated. If you don't need to lose weight, but like stories about 20-30 singletons, read it. If you are looking for the meaning of life or intellictual stimulation, skip it.

Summary: Skip It!
Review: This book was a ... disappointment. Was excited to dive into it, and just let down overall. Shallow and stereotypical... Borrow it from library, but save your money.
