Rating: Summary: holes Review: I give this four stars because it is bad how they treat the kids. Like pouring Stanley water on the ground instead of his canteen. I'm glad that Stanley and Zero ranaway. There stupid to go back like they did.It is a very good story for me.

Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Characters....3 1/2 stars. Review: Icy Sparks is a story about a girl that is inflicted with Tourettes syndrome. I really liked the most of the people in this book, especially Icy herself, she was very likable and funny and I could really feel for her. Her grandparents were very supportive, even in a time when Tourettes syndrome was really not understood. It covers her life from a little girl to a young woman. It describes the illness very well and is quite fascinating. What was disappointing is that there was no real answers of how to deal with the disease, Icy basically hid in her home and stayed away from public life. The other BIG disappointment was how the book was wrapped up, (I can't give it away)but to me it was hard to believe. But give it a try it was very entertaining and was sometimes, quite engrossing. You may like the ending better much better than I did!
Rating: Summary: A Very Special Story Review: I was extremely impressed with this touching story of a young girl suffering from undiagnosed Tourette's Syndrome. It is a sensitive, funny and very moving tale. It helps bring to light both how difficult life can be for those who suffer this disorder and how cruel and prejudiced people can be when confronted with something or somebody different to them. The writing is fluid and engaging and manages to both entertain and educate the reader at the same time. I regret now that this book sat on my pile of to-be-reads for such a long time before I managed to get to it.
Rating: Summary: Oprah was wrong about this one!! Review: I have read and enjoyed other Oprah books but this one was so bad that I found myself laughing out loud or rolling my eyes in disbelief over the author's one-dimensional characters and overall ignorance about Tourettes syndrome. This book was written on an adolescent level; it lacks any depth and substance. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Unfocused and Pointless Review: When I first heard that Oprah chose a coming of age story about a child with Tourette's, I was excited. I have not read a fiction book about Tourette's Syndrome. Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment. The story seemed to ramble without a clear point, then ended abruptly with an irrelevant conclusion. Bad storytelling aside, I did not appreciate Rubio's depiction of Tourette's. In my mind, she treated Icy more as a freak rather than a child who was confused by her special need and treated poorly by others as a result. I was hoping that, being an Oprah book, this would open people's eyes to special needs issues. Instead, I am left hoping that people do not take Rubio's depictions of special needs and Tourette's to heart.
Rating: Summary: Wow- a very enjoyable read! Review: I thoroghly enjoyed reading this book! Gwyn Hyman Rubio effectively brings you into the world of little Icy Sparks. You feel her pain, her embarassment, her anger. I got so mad reading about her teacher, Mrs. Stilton. What made the reading more interesting is that you don't know for sure what her disorder is (although you can figure it out) until the end of the book. I knew nothing about Torette's other than the foul language part, and it was interesting to find out about the eye popping and the body convulsions. I would have liked to see a bit more description on the eye popping part. Every time I reached that part of Icy's fits, I just kept picturing the lady who had been on Letterman a few years back who could make her eyes seriously buldge out of her head. I especially enjoyed the end of the book. It has a great ending, and you feel very happy for Icy. But don't be mislead- it's not a typical feel good book. Icy has a disorder, but she learns how to make the best of it.
Rating: Summary: Almost Gave Me Tics! Review: Icy Sparks: by Gwyn Hyman Rubio I have never been able to "get inside a book" like I did this one very well written! Story line easy to follow. You become very aware of the people in this book. FIve stars all the way, dont let anyone tell you any less. Great read find out for yourself.
Rating: Summary: up-close and personal view of Tourette's Review: A great book to read if thisis of interest to you. This character grows up with Tourette's before much is known about it. Being a first-hand account gives it innocence and sympathy-2 qualities usually tough to apply to Tourrete's.
