Rating: Summary: Shouldn't have tried to add to an already perfect book . Review: Just like my grandpa says, "Don't try to fix something unless it's broken. Gone With The Wind will never be "broken." Alexandra Ripley just didn't have the Southern writing like Margaret Mitchell. The story line didn't seem like anything Margaret Mitchell would write. One of the best things about GWTW is you don't really know what will happen to Sacrlett and Rhett and that's better than trying to give it a happily ever after ending like Alexandra Ripley. I'm only 14 but I read GWTW when I was in 3rd grade and then I read Scarlett when it came out and even though I'm young I know that GWTW shouldn't have been messed with.
Rating: Summary: This Book doesn't keep the same ideas as Gone With the Wind Review: I really hated this sequel. I hated it because: The characters were not the "same" characters as in Gone With the Wind. She tried to make Scarlett a "modern woman", raising her own kid...come on now! That was REALLY frowned upon way back then. I hated the sex in it....there was no sex in the original, why is there in this one. I am sure scarrlett would not had this "not-being-married and having sex" because she married ashley's cousin and THEN had sex (so we are brought to believe)... I thought of this as an average 90's book, full of smutt and ickyness that rules society today...books dont necessarily need to have any sex in it to be good!!!!!! An AVERAGE 90's book,,,
Rating: Summary: The greatest sequel Ever!! Review: I really think this book ws great. I have read the first book over and over and I have seen the movie just as much. I really think this book lives up to the others.I really love it, Thank You
Rating: Summary: I REALLY disliked this book Review: Having never read a sequel of a famous novel before and having studiously avoided reading any of the reviews for the book or any of the controversy surrounding its appearance, I began this book with an open mind. It quickly closed. This is a trashy book better suited for a cover featuring Fabio. First of all, Margaret Mitchell's book is superbly written. She really gives the reader a feeling for the characters and for the deep South during and after the Civil War, an era to which most modern readers can't relate immediately, rather than simply telling a story. She (forgive me for this cliche) brings the past alive. This book is poorly written, gives no feeling for the past (it could have been set in 1980), and departs wildly from the Mitchell characters. Secondly, the story is just really implausible. I mean, all you have to do is consider the birth of her daughter to see what I mean. Thirdly, it's just really trashy, as I said before. There is no dignity or sympathy in the plight of these characters. They are merely foils for rape, civil war, and yet another fire. Overall, I just really can't recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: I was so happy to hear about Scarlett. Review: I was so happy to hear my favorite book, Gone With The Wind, was going to have a sequel. After reading the book, I was completely satisfied. Scarlett picks right up where Gone With The Wind leaves off and continues Scarlett's life. I was interested the whole time I was reading and thought Alexandra Ripley did a great job of researching for her novel. If you're longing to see what happend to Rhett, Scarlett, and everyone else, read Scarlett.
Rating: Summary: Read from your heart! Review: I've just read some of the other customer reviews and I think they were a little harsh. A novel is a novel and not meant to be overanalyzed. This book was one person's idea of how the saga of Rhett and Scarlett continued. Obviously it will not jive with everyone's imagination, but don't take it out on the author. Ripley does a commendable job considering the monumental task before her. We all know that a sequel is rarely as good as the orginal, but the story Ripley creates is excellent in my opinion. Her character development was quite good, especially of Scarlett. No person should stay a child all the time, and Ripley's development of Scarlett into a more mature women was excellent. All in all, it was a very captivating story. My advice, read the book with your heart instead of your head. Get caught up in the story, rather than analying Ripley's technique compared to Mitchell's.
Rating: Summary: They are all wrong Review: I do not agree with those who think that it is a scandal for Ripley to have done it. This is the most exciting book I have ever read, my first sleepless night on a book too, Scarlett gained at last the humanity she missed in Mitchell's novell without loosing her willingness. Moreover the countryside of Ireland makes you feel like flying straight to it, so green, beautifull but realistic to the true Ireland at this time. In fact it was so good that it has been my next vacation destination. In conclusion : an extatic book, a wondefull love story with plenty of romance.
Rating: Summary: The best Love Story I've ever read!!! Review: I think this book deserve more than a 10. I absoloutley loved it. I think the other reviewers need to re-read it. I think Ripley captured the best of Rhett, Scarlett, Mammy and all the rest. I wish there were more books just like her's. I'd read them all!!
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: I've read some of the other reviews and I think it's all a matter of opinion. This was not margret mitchell and not many could top her work but nevertheless, I loved the book. It was romantic and enticing. I agree, some things didn't fit but it was still a good book.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Sequel! Review: This book was amazing and certainly one of the best that I have ever read! It is a perfect sequel to "Gone With The Wind" and the perfect ending to my favourite classic. I recommend it to anyone who loved "Gone With The Wind".
