Summary: Unique, if not over-the-top actioner
Review: It's Pitt to the rescue, again, when America & the UK tangle over an obscure, never ratified treaty that may mean the salvation of America. In the early 20, twin disasters separately take the lives of two men - diplomats for England & the USA. Unknown is that each carried copies of a treaty giving Canda to the USA. Fast forward to the near-future - America faces an unprecedented energy crisis. Luckily, billions of barrels of oil is available just off-shore. Unfortunately, it's on (or under) Canadian waters. Heidi Milligan, a USN Officer and frequent Dirk Pitt companion, discovers reference to the obscure treaty while doing historical research. Knowing the implications of the treaty, NUMA and Dirk Pitt soon join the treasure hunt. Learning of the treaty themselves, the Brits pull out the stops to secure it first. (It's unclear if the Brits are aware of the massive petro-implications at stake, but they're not about to give up Canada.) Routine, and hardly the globe-hopping romp of novels like "Valhalla Rising" or "Cyclops", "Night Probe" is still worth a look. Like Pitt, "Probe" knows what we want, and delivers the goods. The story also adventurously tries a less-than patently evil adversary - with Pitt facing a british agent who's bound by duty, but not given to the bad-guy speeches or grandiose plans. He's probably the most sympathetic foe Pitt has ever faced. For Pitt fans, definately worth a read.

Summary: A gripping combination of action and international intrigue.
Review: Many brilliantly organized chains of events all converge in the explosive climax of Night Probe!, leaving the reader's heart pounding and forehead glistening with sweat. I couldn't put the book down. The creative but plausible scenario makes the plot frighteningly believable. Although the ending is somewhat different personally for Dirk Pitt, its an interesting decision that his heart forces him to make and makes for variety in Cussler's novels. Overall, a very great book.

Summary: Ok, but I've seen better Clive Cussler novels.(spoilers)
Review: My dad has the whole Dirk Pitt collection, and this was the book he started me off with. I must say he made a bad choice. Ok this is a spoiler so skip to the next paragraph if you don't want to know. The North American Treaty is all about Britain selling Canada to America. I'm Canadian, and I found this sort of offensive. Clive Cussler is an American (if you haven't figured that out)and he made the Canadians look like some pawn in a game of Chess. But then again I guess Canada isn't as powerful as the U.S. but we still have done lots of stuff, and we are strong allies with the U.S.A. and Britian.

SO if you're a proud canadian this book isn't for you. Still it's a good novel, and I would read it again. Dirk Pitt was his usual style...cool, relaxed in front of danger, friendly, cold, and caculating.

Summary: Night Probe
Review: My original copy had to be trashed. Worn out. I have all 15 of Mr. Cussler's books and I am well known at the library as "The Dirk Pitt Guy". Every 2nd year his new book comes out they call me. My kids know just what to get me for Xmas, birthday's etc. I've read them all several times and it's pure enjoyment. To pick a favorite is hard but I would guess TREASURE is about it. It amazes me how Mr. Cussler can do all the research and publish every 2 years or so. Read SERPEMT and although it was enjoyable it wasn't up there with the rest. I'm 63, retired, hunt and fish, but most of all I love to read. I just hope Mrs. Cussler takes good care of Mr. Cussler because I plan on being around for a long time and need my most enjoyable author.

Summary: Just an observation
Review: Ok, So I read this book over 20 years ago and hardly remember the plot, though I did enjoy it ahd every other Dirk Pitt novel, and I have read them all. But that isn't what I want to talk about. I picked this particular book to voice this opinion on because of another review I read here, take a glance at the other reviews and you will know which one I mean.
I am writing this to make a simple request to would be reviewers. If you have read only one book in a long standing series like this please read more of these books (particularly the early ones) so you can make informed remarks and not bore the rest of us with your ignorance. Some little comment made by the protagonist in the 42nd book in a series might leave you scratching your head when in fact everyone else in the world is going "Wow! so thats why Doc shot Jane back in <the 38th book>"
Bottom line, we need coherent opinions here, not the soapbox shouting of self appointed pundits who are obviously clueless.
And if anyone else out there feels like comparing Dirk Pitt to Gonad the Bavarian, go back to your tinkertoys.

Summary: Dirk Pitt saves North America
Review: Once again, Clive Cussler has re-written history and predicted a future that has not happened. The major issue is the fate of Canada, when a secret treaty from Woodrow Wilson is discovered. Dirk must find the actual treaty before some of the other nations' best spies find it. Political intrigue abounds as English and French speaking Canadians work behind the scenes. Sometimes its hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. Indeed, when the Canadian Prime Minister's wife has her climatic scene, I was surprised at who was behind the manipulations. I was also dissappointed in the US President's actions.

Summary: Not as good as Raise The TITANIC... But still great!!
Review: The United States, Canada and Great Britain find themselves in one hell of a mess in this heart-stopping, mind-numbing and gut-wrenching novel from good ol' C. Cussler.

The States are in the midst of an economic disaster. Quebec struggles for independence. Her Majesty's Secret Service cannot allow the Americans to obtain the long lost mysterious North American Treaty that may cost each side everything. Only Dirk Pitt can save the day and do the impossible for the sake of the U.S. of A.

The story is full of political intrigue and Cussler's famous shipwreck mysteries. It's not as hypnotic as RAISE THE TITANIC! but it still delivers lots of tense moments to keep you glued.

The only gripe is the ending. VERY bold, extraordinary and too unbelievable.

Summary: The Best Yet!
Review: This book is one of Cussler's best. I've also read Atlantis Found, Sahara, and Inca Gold, and they all have explosive endings. I loved It!

Summary: The Best Yet!
Review: This book is one of Cussler's best. I've also read Atlantis Found, Sahara, and Inca Gold, and they all have explosive endings. To the german guy who gave it 2 stars: You're stupid. If an eleven year old like me can understand the funny jokes and intricate plot, you should be able to read and understand it, too. Doo bis doom (that's "you are dumb" in german).

Summary: Definitely one of Cussler`s absolute best
Review: This one is up in the premier league, Clive! An action-packed, spellbinding read from beginning to end, this is well plotted with a twist around every corner and easy to read. An ideal introduction for those new to Clive Cussler. The premise, of a 75 year old treaty which could change the shape of America and the mystery surrounding the train and boat disasters is an ingenious idea. I was reading this at work in lunch and tea breaks and couldn`t wait to read the next bit . . . even though I`ve now read this one three times ever since I first had it several years ago as a teanager. This is up there with `Dragon`, `Raise The Titanic`,`Cyclops`, `Deep Six` and `Sahara` as one of Clive Cussler`s finest moments.
