Rating: Summary: snow in august review Review: THIS amazing page tuner is the best book i have read all year. Michael Devlin, a young irish altar boy who becomes the best of friends with a old rabbi in 1940's brooklyn. Michale goes through a very touch decision and pete hamill accompanies us through the touch choice taht mike must make. I would definitely recomd this book because its' a story taht takes place 50 years ago but is written only 2 years ago.
Rating: Summary: Snow in August Review Review: The book was good except for the ending which was way too happy. The book had good ideas and an interesting plot, but the religious propaganda it instilled in the minds of young readers was ridiculous. The golem stuff was just plain dumb. I DONT THINK SO MR HAMILL... oi!
Rating: Summary: We did not enjoy this book half way through....... Review: If you are someone that enjoys a coming of age book , read Snow in August . Michael is an Irish boy who befriends a rabbi and they teach each other the ways of their land. I enjoyed reading the book in the beginning, because it dealt with real life problems after the war. Then near the end of the book, super magical power is used and it confused me.I wish that the author had come up with an ending that I could relate too, and made me feel that there was a good conclusion to the problems that had arose. With the magical powers I feel that Michael did not make enough effort in the ending to feel that he has accomplished anything.
Rating: Summary: The Good, The Bad, The Golem Review: After reading this book, I felt it was a good book. Though, I felt that the ending wasn't too realistic. Throughout the book, the Rabbi, and Michael were dealing with racism, and the "Falcons" getting in there way. It was really realistic with the imagery, and the language that the author was using. As I read, I was drown to figure out what was happening next. Though, as it got to the ending, it took the realistic tone, and it got turned into a fairy-tale. It was interesting though how the Golem took revenge for Michael was very cool, but isn't realistic to happen. So, if you want to read this book, you should; and you should try to have an open-minded imagination.
Rating: Summary: The Jibba Review Review: We believe that Snow in August is a cool book yall. We had to read it for english class, and we think that it brings out many elements of a good book to read, for anyone who likes coming of age novels with children and adult interaction. This has many great aspects of maturing and examining a child's realization to the world and his perception of evil, religion, and every day decisions in an adults life, that a child must learn to understand. Go ahead and read this book you can get a lot out of it! And it needs more cow bell!!- Old time joke...Kristy: I thought the book was delightful and I couldn't put it down; even, if I was on the beach during spring break. Micheal had quite an imagination, although the ending was blown out of proportion. It probably would have been better if the Rabbi wasn't healed miraciously recovered. The ending should of been more thoughtout. It made me finally pick up my book on the KABBALAH after 2 years of ownership.
Rating: Summary: imagine that: jay and denny Review: Snow in August is a book dealing with the childhood difficulties of growing up in downtown Brooklyn. It is a perfect model of a hero's journey to defend his own, and defeat evil. It starts off with michael, age 11, who is in the stage of his life where he reads Comic Books and believes in mythilogical creatures, such as a dog named sticky. He begins to grow up when he witnesses the beating of a jew. And later becomes friends with a rabbi. Then he begins to mature and begins to deal with racial and prejudice issues. He gets into fights with gang members over rights of religions. The ending was kind of disapointing, however you must read the book to find out what it is about. I recommend this book to anyone thats intrested.
Rating: Summary: Great Story. But the ending? Review: We feel that Snow in August was a very intense and heart warmming from front to back. Michael's curious and determined character appeals to people of all ages and demonstrates real heroism in the face of danger. Michael and his Rabbi friend journey together through many fun and terrifying adventures. Together they stand up against racism in their little nook of Brooklyn and oppose prejudice in Major League Baseball. Read this book to see if they are able to overcome impossible odds to defeat evil on the streets of the parish, in Prague, and at Ebbet's Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Rating: Summary: a review Review: Snow in August was a wonderful book with the exception if the ending. Pete Hamill proved to be an extrodinary author until the ending came. Snow in August is a perfect book to show the breakthroughs in racism. It shows how old and young people can become friends. And most importantly, Snow in August shows how beliveing something hard enough can make magic really happen. It reminded me of how when i was young, how much I believed in and how miracles did happen. As I gew older though, my mind somewhat closed a little...from believeing in magic. Snow in August has reminded me of so much i once had, but lost. To see two people, so different yet so much alike, come together as one is exceptional. The power of words has also played a role in this story. Michael had to fight with himself to get his morals straight, but all turns out well at the end. I would've given better rates to this book except a few scenes seemed so hastily written.
Rating: Summary: Bad finish took away from otherwise interesting book. Review: Snow in August started off very strong. A lot of action took place within the first few chapters, and only increased after that. Every character was easily recognized in the book. From a confused young man, to a rabbi covering up his past, to friends who didn't know what was right, to a young villian who only cared for himself, this story had it all. Except for the ending, the story made strong generalizations about racism continuing in our country under our very eyes. However, the ending was very irrealistic and the book seemed more like a fairy tale. If the ending was perhaps more realistic, this story would have moved into the four to five star range.
Rating: Summary: Heroics that would make Speilberg smile Review: There is magic in snow, especially in the memories of snow in one's childhood. So, the grand adventure of a fatherless Irish Catholic altar boy in 1940's New York begins in snow. The voice through the snow, that of a Jewish rabbi newly emigrated to the U. S., is Michael Devlin's call to adventure. An unlikely and captivating friendship results with Michael teaching the Rabbi English, and the Rabbi teaching Michael about the mystical truths of kabbalah, Yiddish, and the Jewish ghetto of centuries past Poland. Just as Jackie Robinson emerges as the great black hope of baseball, Michael and Judah Hirsch emerge to fight off the racist, bullying Falcons. The fantasy of the Golem, a Jewish enforcer of justice, is restored to legendary status here. There is plenty of suspense and torture to overcome as Michael stands up for his Jewish friend and for his mother and himself. Michael comes of age through his exhibition of courage. Did it really happen? Who cares? This is a great story with a happy ending. Get transported to another time when all things are possible. Read Snow in August. Or hope for a great movie version.
