Summary: Great Book
Review: I loved the book. It captured the difficulty and beauty of grandmother-daughter-granddaughter relationships. The author understands and accurately depicted the complexity of emotions and traits that are passed down, often unbeknownst from generation to generation. Could not put it down. Wonderful!

Summary: Good read, fascinating characters
Review: I loved this book. While reading it I became aware of how hard life was only 100 years ago and how lucky we are to have modern conveniences. I liked the grit and determination of the characters in this book. Very entertaining!

Summary: Celebration of daughter, mother, grandmother
Review: I really enjoyed how the daughter wanted to sift back through her mother's and grandmother's lives to understand them and why they did the things they did. I felt that the photographer's scene was explanatory because the watershed moments of everyone's lives were in the book - these details illuminated their lives and showed us who they were. It was most enjoyable. I hope every mother, daughter and grandmother will take the time to read this book to help us understand one another better.

Summary: Why sleep when you can read this book?
Review: I started the book Saturday morning and couldn't put it down until I finished it late Sunday. I was possessed by the story. Why sleep when you can read this book?

Summary: Disappointing and passionless
Review: I usually LOVE books about mother-daughter relationships, especially ones that span more than two generations. I found this book hard to follow, though, with the going back and forth between characters and with the women's names being so similar. The writing was strangely bland and in my mind, did not bring the women to life. I regret paying full price for this book.

Summary: Hanna's daughters
Review: I usually really enjoy this kind of book but i think it must have lost something in the translation as i found the style quite bland. The story on the whole was good, but i much prefered a book called 'Stones from the river' by Ursula Heigi that is like this in some ways -only a lot better. I just felt like it lacked something.

Summary: Wish I read the reviews before wasting my money
Review: I was excited about this book but by page 100 I was done. It was too much work keeping track of characters that are not interesting. The awkward writing style is impossible - it must have lost something in the translation. Wish I'd read reviews before wasting my money!

Summary: Point of View Changes
Review: I was really looking forward to this book, but after three weeks I was only on page 188 and still couldn't figure out who was telling the story. Flagrant POV shifts confused me and two-dimensional characters made me feel as if I were "looking" at someone's words. Just couldn't connect with the time or place or feel empathy for their woes.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Fragmented, disjointed POV as well as in its telling
Review: Love generational, historical books that weave families and events. Unfortunately this one reads like a series of unconnected sentences with unrelated facts. I felt that none of the characters were developed to the point that they were real.
