Rating: Summary: It(s) [no good]. Review: There is nothing interesting about this book. The story rambled on endlessly and ultimately went absolutely nowhere; the characters were boring, unlikeable and undeveloped (each character is virtually the exact same person at the beginning of the novel as at the end, even though over 20 years had elapsed - nobody learns from their past, no one evens tries). Plot? Don't bother looking - it's not there. Even the sex scenes, which were plentiful, were tepid. I only completed this idiotic book because I was on a plane and couldn't chuck it out the window. It consumed 3 hours of my life that I'll never get back. Don't let it happen to you.
Rating: Summary: For any woman or girl Review: This is one of my favorite books! I took a two year break from reading, but a friend of mine gave me this, and I adored it. Now, I am a book nerd again! I guess it just took the right story to get me into it ! I gave it to my mom and she loved it as well. It's truly a book for any female. The story is quite simple. It is a coming of age story of two girls. It made me remember my teens, and it was extremely sweet. Please read it!
Rating: Summary: A review of Judy Blume's Summer Sisters Review: Summer Sisters is the story of Victoria and Caitlin. Caitlin is a wildly extravagant girl whose parents are divorced. She spends half of the year on Martha's Vineyard, an Island, with her father Lamb. Each summer Caitlin and Victoria reunite on the Vineyard as summer sister. The girls grow up together. They experience love together and explore life together. It is a story of self-discovery. It shows the growth and development of two very different, young girls. Victoria's life is changed forever when Caitlin chooses her as a friend that first summer. Vix (a nickname given by Caitlin to Victoria) is welcomed into Caitlin's dazzling eccentric world, opening doors to unimaginable privilege. The story begins many years earlier and weaves in Vix's college life and ends with Vix working in New York as a fashion designer. Caitlin calls her out-of-the-blue one day at work and tells her she is going to be married on the vineyard. Vix is hesitant but Caitlin begs her to be her maid of honor. Vix knows that she will go because she wants to know exactly what happened during that last shattering summer. And she wants to know why her best friend-her summer sister---still still has the power to break her heart. Judy Blume does an excellent job portraying each girl and each family. She spends most of her time with Victoria's life and her feelings but through Victoria one gets to see the life of a very troubled young girl, Caitlin. Caitlin spends much of her life alone. But the truth is, Caitlin needs a family. Through Vix, and Caitlin's newfound life, Caitlin finds this family. She also finds love. Unfortunately Caitlin still is not satisfied. This novel is an exceptionally moving story that can leave the reader laughing and crying sometimes at the same time. Judy Blume creates a rich tapestry of characters. Judy Blume takes an interesting point of view on the story. Even though Vix is the main character Blume allows each person to give his or her own points of view of different situations, in the first person. She does this by putting titles at the top of the page like: Tawny, Pheobe, Lamb, or Abby. Beneath these titles that person's point of view is shown through the first person. I liked the way that she did this. In other novels you only get to see the other characters point of view through the main character. This view is tainted. By putting each character in the first person it allows you to see their true character, their true meaning, behind each situation. Other books have done something similar to this and I have found it to be confusing. Judy Blume came up with a clear, concise way to do this view on the story by using the titles. I liked this book because it was interesting at all times. It never felt dragged out or boring. She uses rich language to support her well-developed story line. It seems like Judy Blume still remembers what it is like to be a twelve-year-old girl and the way life really is for these people. It is wonderful to see the two very different girls. She has a great story with a very intriguing take on life. Overall, Judy Blume did a great job with the novel. She allows the reader to get inside the book. The feel like they are actually on the vineyard. You feel and understand the trials and tribulations of Victoria Leonard. You share her joys and excitements, her loves and her hates, as if it were yourself. Judy Blume creates a world of fantasy for each of her readers to escape to called Martha's Vineyard.
Rating: Summary: What a learning experience! Review: This book was so awesome. I recommend it to young adults about 16 and above, adults will love it too. Usually I do not like reading books with peoples problems in it, but this was a good experience. I learned a lot from it, and it opened my eyes a lot on the out side world around me. If you have a problem with being pushed around by someone or feel like you are in the middle, then I suggest reading this book. It will help you a lot. So go check it out!
Rating: Summary: This is a beautifully written book Review: This is definitely one of the best, if not *the* best, books I've ever read. It's so wonderful the way you become emotionally attached to the characters, you feel everything they feel as you read the book. This book reveals truths about life. You will not want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: A Friendly Read Review: Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume, is such a great book. The main focus of the book is friendship, and this book would be a perfect read for anyone who thinks a lot about friendships, or it is a big part of their life. In this book you follow the friendship of two girls starting in their teenage years through their young adult years. Each summer they spend together you see how they find things they like or dislike about one another, and it will make you recall old friendships of your own. I found this to be both a positive and negative reading experience. I suggest that anyone who has had a good, or bad, friendship in the younger part of their life to read this book and look back upon your friendships.
Rating: Summary: Summer Sisters if Great !!! Review: I could not put this book down, and I am not a frequent reader. This book is a perfect summer book. The story about Vix and Caitlin is fun and romantic. I am looking forward to reading something else from Judy Blume. This book sure was excellent.
Rating: Summary: This Book Evokes Memories Review: I read Judy Blume as a little girl and noticed she had a knack for shedding light on subjects one wants desperately to know more about but feel fearful of asking. Here she does it again, with a story for adults about an intense friendship between two young women: Caitlin, a stunning beauty who is unaware of her own worth, and Vix, the smart one who is unaware of her own natural beauty. A supporting character makes a remark that everyone experiences a covetous friendship in junior high, and then we get over it. Some of us never get over it, and Blume illuminates that experience here. Her spare writing style combine with a well-crafted sense of urgency to make this a quick read, and like another reviewer I stayed up late into the night to finish the book. Blume also deftly names parts of the book after song titles from the era the part is set in, making sense of time that much more palpable. Caitlin and Vix meet at age twelve and form a lasting friendship that will change their lives; both their sets of parents also exert tremendous influence on the girls. Blume provides the big picture that allows the reader to look at Caitlin's and Vix's situation more clearly than they can, and although some didn't like her ending, I though it provided neccessary closure. If ever you have experienced an unusually close and life-changing friendship and the attendant heartache, this book can be wonderfully healing.
Rating: Summary: Growing up novel told Blume style Review: I must admit, I am not a strong Judy Blume reader but this book was truly made me appreciate her older works. This book has depth into a 80s coming of age story. I could not put this book down and a few months later, it came back to me for a second read. Her narrative style, with a insightful point of view almost all the characters is original. Her writing technique is wonderful in this and it's down to earth. The story can relate to any teenage girl who's truly interested about her sexuality and friends. This is one of the best reads for anyone during leisure time.
Rating: Summary: Touching One Another's Lives Review: Judy Blume's Summer Sisters is one of those novels that must be read quickly. I couldn't put it down. When was the last time you had to stay up at night to finish a novel? Well, if you read this one you will perhaps find yourself in the same situation. Blume hooks the reader immediately by beginning the novel in the present and then switching to flashbacks. She introduces the reader to twelve year old girls who become life-long friends. We follow Vix and Caitlin into their thirties, and we learn about the trials and tribulations of coming-of-age females and their families. Although it appears that Caitlin's effect on Vix is much stronger than Vix's effect on Caitlin, the novel is an excellent example of how lives are changed by the people that cross our paths. This is not a great book of deep literature, but it is pleasant and entertaining. An important point to consider when choosing this book is the age bracket of the person reading it. I think it is dangerous for a novelist such as Blume to write an adult novel when she is known for her books for young adults. I certainly would not want to give this book to my 15 year old daughter to read because of the explicit nature of the sex scenes. Initially, that is why I purchased the novel. I am glad that I read it first. However, that is just my opinion. As an adult I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, and I loved the manner in which the story was told. It's a great summer novel. Enjoy!
