Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT Review: This book is for every woman who has grown up with a good close friend, it re-kindles those childhood memories, thoughts, and dreams. I couldn't put this book down and I gave it to my mother and my sister.
Rating: Summary: Good entertainment Review: Someone said in an earlier review that there are no answers to why some of us continue friendships with women who break our hearts over and over. God...that is so true. And maybe that is what appealed to me about this story. I have a friendship like that and I always worry that people think I am crazy for staying with it. But now I know that there must be millions of women who really do understand that sometimes there are bonds that can't be broken for any reason.I had bought the hardcover long before the paperback came out, but waited to read it until I was vacationing on Martha's Vineyard last week. I liked reading about the island while I was there, and I'd forgotten how sex ridden Blume's adult books are. Definitely a good beach read! I would recommend the paperback, especially since it is so inexpensive. Don't expect any fabulous literature, but do expect to be sucked into the friendship of Vix and Caitlin, and do expect to want to go to Martha's Vineyard!
Rating: Summary: Great quick read Review: I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it was a quick read, yes the characters were a little shallow and no, it didn't have any real "literary value". However, it was entertaining, and isn't that why we all read??
Rating: Summary: good for 12 year olds Review: i was obsessed with judy blume's books from the ages of about 10-12, and was curious to see how she was at writing for adults. however, she has not accomplished that with this book. it has shallow, stereotypical characters, minimal plot, and tons of sex scenes which were exciting at age 11, but at 18 are just boring and unnecessary, and sometimes laughable. i gave this book 2 stars because i'm sure i would have loved it 6 years ago... skip it and give it to a younger sister or daughter.
Rating: Summary: You'll like all the characters in this fun read... Review: I loved the tale of the two different, entertwined characters over the years. The pages where an individual character would comment were woven in beautifully and gave insight into all the supporting characters too!
Rating: Summary: A real page-turner Review: Like many others I couldn't put this book down! I read many of her books as a preteen, including "Are You There..." so I am very familiar with Judy Blume's writing style. Summer Sisters lived up to my expectations. If you like the movie "Beaches" you will probably like Summer Sisters as well. It made me remember my own childhood best friend and makes me want to call her. I do agree with the others though that some of the minor characters weren't very well developed but I liked how, throughout the book we got to listen to the thoughts of each character. While this book is not perfect it is enjoyable, entertaining reading.
Rating: Summary: Trashy, mindless rubbish Review: Since I had to choose between one and five stars I gave it a one star. It doesn't even deserve that! I would not advise anyone to waste their time reading this book. Many of the characters never evolved in my mind. Even the main characters were not believable. There has got to more than just self gratifacation in most people's lives. I could never imagine why the two main characters even liked each other. I still can't believe I actually finished it. I thought there may be some fantastic story line. In the end it was all just nothing. Certainly no value as a book for anyone in my opinion. Very disappointing reading.
Rating: Summary: Very moving, impossible-to-put-down book!!!! Review: This was a great book, obviously intended for the adult reader. I found the relationship between Vix and Caitlin both very special and wonderful, yet incredibly heart-breaking at the same time. As someone in the book says, I honestly believe most of us have had a friend like Caitlin. While there was no real insight into why Caitlin turned into such an irresponsible, cruel adult, we can indeed speculate. She had no real family unit, as her mother was so free-spirited and flitting from boyfriend to boyfriend. Her father she only saw during the summers. Thus, there was a definite lack of parental attention and supervision. This story is also about why people hold on to that one friend who keeps breaking your heart. The story doesn't explain why Vix doesn't break ties with Caitlin, and there doesn't seem to be an answer to this question in real-life relationships such as this. I found this book hard to put down, and really hated for it to end. Judy Blume has always had a special place in my heart, as I read her books growing up and it's obvious that she really understands all the pain and different emotions people experience in life, from childhood through adulthood.
Rating: Summary: If your time is very valuable.....don't waste it with this Review: I'm 22 years old---maybe not even an adult yet--, and the situations in this book are even annoying to ME! You know what is cool?--if you have to name a baby soon, pick a name out of this book---very hip.
Rating: Summary: Are you there Judy? It's me, an annoyed reader... Review: I thoroughly enjoyed all of Judy's teen-themed books as a kid. I was excited to read that she had written a book specifically for my audience -- her readers who grew up reading her stories, but are now grown ups. Unfortunately, I opened the book to find that it was written mainly about the girls we left behind when we grew up. I didn't need/want another coming of age story. What I appreciated about Judy's voice (or her character's voice) in those books when I was younger was that it was fresh; she said the things we were far too scared to say ourselves. We knew, through reading her, that there were people out there thinking "unGodly" things, questioning the very things we were questioning, etc... I expected an Adult story with this same voice. I'm thoroughly disappointed with the what I read instead. That said, I gave up on wanting an adult story and tried to read yet another "teen girls experiment with sex and get hurt" plot. But that's all it was. I'm offended that this book is described as being a representation of the "female psyche." I didn't recognize any part of myself in the actions of Vix, Caitlin, Star, Abby, Phoebe, etc. And that's sadly all it was: actions. What happened to developing a character? For a book with so much internal dialogue, there was NO character depth. Perhaps, as I've been told, I expected too much.
