Summary: A "Must Read" Novel... What are you waiting for?? GO READ IT
Review: If there is one word to sum up Rule of the Bone it is INCREDIBLE. I had to read this book for an English class I took and was told wonderful things about it. So of course, this was the first book I read. Wow. That was all I was left with. It was jsut amazing. Banks is my new god. His writing is superb and his characters are so well developed. I felt like Bone was my friend, and he was dragging me along on his adventures with I-Man and the other characters. If you are not a stuffy and snotty person, you will enjoy this book. You will laugh when Bone laughs, and cry when he cries, just as I did. So if you are ready for a ride on a wonderfully crazy emotional rollercoaster, read Rule of the Bone. You will NOT be disappointed, I guarantee it.

Summary: Heartbreaking and sad but an amazing read!
Review: This book is a modern day Huck Finn and the differences between Mark Twain's work and Russell Banks' could not be more stark or representative of the times in which we live. "Bone" is a young teenage boy trying to find his way in the world. More or less abandoned by his family (in a crucial scene, his down on her heels mother chooses Bone's pathetic stepfather over him with barely a second thought...she does not know that Bone has been sexually abused by the man but that should hardly matter. He's so pathetic anyway that to think a mother would choose this loser over her own child is unbelievable but, then again, that's Banks' whole point), Bone attempts to create a new home for himself and moves from place to place, barely staying ahead of major trouble. With one exception, every adult in the book fails Bone in a way that should make every reader shake his head. The horrible reality is that I believe Bone's story is being played out every day in America. Banks' has done a masterful job in depicting why our youth seem so rootless and out of touch; mainly, it's because their parents' are morally bankrupt and more immature than the children they raise. I loved this book but found it incredibly sad. It ends on a hopeful note, an ending that was required because the reader is rooting so hard for Bone to find his way. We are left with the feeling that at long last he will. Every parent should read this and learn from it.

Summary: My Review of the book Rule of the Bone
Review: The book, Rule of the Bone, is very interesting and very dramatic. I really recommend this book because the author clearly shows he can achieve to make the 14-year old boy a well fictional character. The boy seems so real that you really feel like you're the boy in his life and facing all these difficulties. To me, the author's vocabulary isn't as strong as I have hope because I've read many books with strong vocabulary, such as Huckleberry Finn. But he does a good job to get across his theme. Another reason why this book is good is because the boy has strongly moved me because he is someone who can keep his integrity in his world that barely knows what it means. But I like the fact that he talks about his emotions towards his actions because sometimes I feel like I can't express how I feel towards anything because my parents would become angry with me as they did with him as well. For instance, "Chappie, this is the worst thing you've ever done! My mom said and she started sobbing harder". Chappie, the 14-year old boy, has stolen some coins from his mom's collection, but he didn't know it. But the point is he wasn't suppose to steal and buy drugs because it is a generation gift that is passed on to each generation in the family. His mother was mad at him the most because he spent the coins on something useless and she wanted him to pass on to his children or whoever. He is very irresponsible but he manages to keep track of his life. The main reason why I liked it so much is because he is a person with a negative attitude and some how, he finds a way to be clear headed.

Summary: Bone Rules
Review: Rule of the Bone for me, was a life changing tale. The way I go through highschool everday has changed for me ever since. Bone, the star or the book, has so many ways I can relate to him. While i read this book i forgot all about bone and instead it was me who was going through all of the heartpounding events.
If you've ever read The Catcher in the Rye, you have to read this. It's like that book in so many ways, but better. I recomend this book to all that know how to read.

Summary: Probably Lots of Real Kids In Similar Situations
Review: At one level (a major one) this is another adolescent angst story in the same vein as Catcher in the Rye or The Graduate, propagating the notion that you don't really have to do much in the world, you don't have to exert any sort of effort or possess any personal discipline -- especially if you've ever been mistreated in any fashion -- that you can wallow in your status as a victim and just drift through life, taking things as they come along. It is probably good escapism for responsible teens who fantasize about abandoning school work and simply drifting, so long at they don't sink themselves into escape, fly from reality and start using drugs. Though a low quality of life is portrayed in this book, the quality of the writing is high. On another level, this is an interesting look at the devastation which irresponsible parents can wreak upon a child, people who never had any business having kids in the first place. To a thinking individual, the vagabond life that young Bone is leading is, initially, absolutely disgusting. His values are non-existent, his behavior atrocious -- and then some facts emerge which make you understand, which make you feel genuinely sorry for the kid. The question is, did Bone grow up, mature and move on in his life? Or did he simply become a drug-wasted drifter for the rest of his days?

Summary: wonderful storytelling
Review: a truly modern adventure story. so many resonations with people and events in any modern youths upbringing, casual crime and drugs, dead end jobs and friends. chappies coming off age and enlightment take him to jamacia where he confronts the true ups and downs, truths and lies of his life. All dealt with in a very realistic and easy to read fashion. loved it.

Summary: The Carribean Youth In Revolt
Review: This is right up there with the Perks of Being a Wallflower and Youth In Revolt. A more tropical and drug oriented story, this flows smoothly and quickly and rarely looses your attention. Well worth the money.

Summary: voice, page-turner...where's the beef?
Review: The first thing you think about when you think about "Rule of the Bone" is the protagonist's voice. Sloppy, energetic, unfocused, anarchistic, lazy, and emotional, the voice really gets under your skin. It's a dead ringer for the voice of the modern 14-year-old. The next thing you notice is how fast you're reading the book. I finished it in a couple of days. I couldn't put it down. The language doesn't require scrutiny. It's not the language of introspection, nor is it laced with symbolism and clever literary tricks. It's the language of an exorcism, a testimonial, it's a confessional, and is rushed out in one long breath. And it's a cliff-hanger without resolution. The further in you go, the faster you go, desperately looking for a sense of closure with any of the innumerable plot points Banks serves up. Unfortunately, not much is left. The book ends in a totally unsatisfying manner. Nothing is resolved. We have no clue as to Chappie/Bone's future. Not that literature has to have resolution to be enjoyable...but it helps. A lot. Especially when the plot points are as conventional as "Rule of the Bone's": sexual abuse, drugs, runaway teens. There is some trouble, too, with the plot being dragged down to Jamaica, to a Rastafarian fantasy world of gangsters, drugs, and swimming pools. It fits Bone like a glove on a snake. And what kind of self-respecting punk loves 60s and 70s music more suitable to an aging novelist? Where's Green Day and the Cramps? Nonetheless, "Rule of the Bone" is a satisfying book that connects with many readers. It's a raw expose of a young mind, and skillfully done by Mr. Banks.

young adult The book is about a boy who smokes pot is about 15 who gets kicked out of is house for stealing his stepfathers coins. He moves in with one of his friends (who also does drugs)and lives with him for a wile. He goes home for christmas and his mom takes him back in to his house.
I think this book struck me the most because I liked the story line and the style of writting.
A draw back about the book that would make somebody not read is the drugs and word choise.
I liked this book because It was easy to follow and i like russle banks writting style
