Rating: Summary: Interesting and compelling FICTION! Review: I enjoyed reading this book however, the historical inaccuracies made it a little unbelievable at times. A sequel would be nice, it would indeed be interesting to see how the next generation handles the Tremain family curse and the duties of the family name and empire. Guy Johnson may be on to something great with this one!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding plot, a page turner from start to finish. Review: Loved King/LeRoi Tremaine. It was delightful to real about a Afro-American man during World War I. A smart Afro-American man. A man who would have had it all if he had picked a different wife. Serena was just too narrow a Afro-American woman figure for me. She was cruel and selfish to the people who would have loved her the most her marvelous husband and her outstanding son. She turned out to be as bad or perhaps worst than her selfish father. It is a good read however, I have suggested it to all my friends. I am looking forward to another novel from Guy Johnson -- hopefully real soon.
Rating: Summary: FABOULOUS Review: I fell in love with King Tremain! He was a force to be reckoned with. It transports you to his time and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I would like to see further adventures of King and his sons.(Perhaps!?) Johnson sure knows how to spin a tale. I can't wait for his next work(s)!!! I can't wait to see the movie!!!
Rating: Summary: Historical inaccuracies make for difficult reading. Review: Any student of history will be truly disappointed with this book. Johnson has taken historical events from one decade and transported them to the next, with little thought or research. Even more amazing is the fact that the editor(s) failed to correct such obvious errors. A shining example: a chapter set in 1918 Europe has characters mentioning repairing jeeps and the Red Ball Express. The jeep and the famous Red Ball Express supply line were products of World War II, not World War I. Research of this caliber results in reading that's as enjoyable as fingernails on a chalk board
Rating: Summary: I think the book was wonderful Review: I think the book had a lot of action. I loved King Tremain's characther. I was glad to read a book were the black man was in charge in the old days. ITS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME
Rating: Summary: The "scratch line" is the mirror of our hopes and fears Review: There comes a time in all of our lives when we must face who we are. There comes a time when we must ask ourselves, "What must I do to improve myself and to improve the conditions surrounding me?" If you are not prepared to face yourself, if you are not prepared to stand at the scratch line and face your most ardent opponent, yourself, then you do not want to read Guy Johnson and you do not want to know his hero, King LeRoi Tremain. They will not allow you to slumber in your shackles. They will not allow you your smug security while those around you suffer from bigotry. They will not say "well done" until mediocrity is no longer in your vocabulary or in your thoughts. If you do not want to know what it is to be a man, and pay the price, do not read Standing at the Scratch Line.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: This book is a powerful work. It is riviting and goes far in washing away any remaining racist grime that may exist in your soul.
Rating: Summary: COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN, MADE ME FEEL SO PROUD!! Review: KING REMINDED OF MR.MAN IN ROSEWOOD. WE NEED SOME BLACK REAL HEROES THAT STAND UP FOR WHAT THEY BELEIVE IN. AND THAT WORD HE HATED. SHOUT IT LOUD AND CLEAR!! I'M A NOT ONE, NEVER HAVE BEEN ONE AND WON'T ALLOW MY FAMILY OR FRIENDS TO USE IT. MR.JOHNSON MUST WRITE PART 2. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO HIS FIRST SON.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT READ -- HARD TO PUT DOWN!! Review: I love books both fact and fiction. Standing at the Scratch Line is one of those rare books you want to share with others. There was so much emotion. I cried, laughed, held my breath, and gritted my teeth while reading this book. Mr. Johnson really has a gift and he makes the words just flow so smoothly. One of my favorite books is "The Charm School" by Nelson DeMille but Mr. Johnson will now be added to my list. How about a sequel -- it would be great to know how the next generation turns out with the Tremain grandson.
Rating: Summary: GREAT GUG-A-MUGA GIVE ME SOME MORE!! Review: I READ ON THE AVERAGE AT ONE NOVEL PER WEEK. THIS IS THE BEST OF THE BEST. MR JOHNSON, I LAUGHED HILARIOUSLY FROM PAGE 384 - 399. YOUR REFERENCE TO A POPULAR (?) NAMESAKE IS FANTASTIC, AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED IS TOTALLY ACCURATE CHARACTERISTICALLY OF MR. C.T. LOOKING FORWARD TO A SEQUEL. YOU CAN'T HELP BUT WRITE ONE BECAUSE WE ALL WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO SON #1. THANKS FOR GIVING ME SUCH A GREAT READ.
