Rating: Summary: This is a wonderful book! Thank you Sharon Kay Penman! Review: Everyone here has already expressed my enthusiasm for Sunne in Splendour. But I did want to add yet another five-star rating just on the chance that Sharon Kay Penman might see this page. A job well done. As I neared the end of your novel I paused to see when you had published it. (1982) thinking of the craftsmanship and work put into your writing and how satisfying it must have felt to hold the first print in your hands. I also found myself relating Richard's experiences and responses with my own 20th century life especially in the areas of self-honesty, integrity, relationships, and appreciating love. This is a fine piece of work, one that I didn't want to see end. I'm please to have so many other Sharon Kay Penman books ahead of me, ready to explore and ponder. Thank you Sharon Kay Penman.
Rating: Summary: The best historical fiction I have ever read! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is very well-written (I am a picky reader), endlessly captivating, and motivated me to want to study the true historical context. The characters so came to life for me that I actually felt emotionally involved in the lives of both Edward and Richard and even mourned for their deaths. I rarely find an author I would rate with 5 stars, but Penman deserves every one of them.
Rating: Summary: Definitely a lifetime favorite! Review: I was given this book by a history teacher who also gave me other Sharon Kay Penman books to read. I was pleasently surprised by this one. I had previously read The Princes in the Tower by Alison Weir which had set my mind one way against Richard III. This book gave me a new perspective and a desire to study more for myself what the King was truly like.
Rating: Summary: "Penman"-ship forever! Review: Found this book in a clearance rack. It was thick and had a pretty cover! Little did I know how wonderful it would be. In fact, when the hurricane blew it away after I'd only read half of it, I was frantic to find it again. My mother found a copy for my birthday but read it first. Now she, too, is one of Sharon's fans. It truly lets you live the days of Richard of York in a most realistic way. I had to look again at the author's name when I read a battle scene that was written so well that the sounds and smells were real! Sharon Kay Penman is one of the world's finest historical writers and it is a surprise to me as well that she isn't on the bestseller list (yet!) You must also read her books on Llewellyn the Great, and Llewellyn, the Last True Prince of Wales. Met Sharon at a reading for her new mystery, The Queen's Man, in November 1996. She is a lovely, gracious lady. We, her Miami fans, look forward to her next great book, Cruel As the Grave: A Medieval Mystery. Justin is fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Finally some justice for Richard of York! Review: I really enjoyed "The Sunne in Splendour" because it was well written, exciting and very factual. It is also about time that people understand that Richard of York was portrayed in a particular way because historians were commissioned by the Tudors and thus had to make them look good and the house of York appear to be evil. It's nice to have the record straightened.
Rating: Summary: A book that is intriguing and captivating Review: I read this book a very long time ago and could not put it down. I am not a history buff or a romantic, but for some reason this book captivated me. I read it cover to cover in two days. I tried to find it in book stores and never could. I am so excited that I can now purchase it for my bookshelf. I highly suggest it to anyone who enjoys a good novel, even if you don't usually enjoy history or romance novels, please give it a try.
Rating: Summary: This book engulfed my entire being. I lived only to read it. Review: There are no words to describe this Plantagenet epic. I have been a devoted fan of Penman's since Here Be Dragons, and just when I think she can't get better, well ofcourse she does. Right from the first chapter it is like someone punched you in the gut, and you never recover again. I have always been so impressed by the way Penman tells a story and the vitality which she injects into her characters, but nothing could have prepared me for the way this book engulfed my entire being. I felt like Alice falling into the looking glass. I lived only for the moments when I could return to my reading; resented all elements of life which encroached on my time with Edward and Richard (as their lives became my life); and became desperate when I realized I was nearing the end of the novel. In addition, Penman writes a battle scene like no one else. I heard the noises, I smelled the smoke and the sweat, my arms grew tired from weilding the sword, my mind raced with the need for immediate strategy. I don't thin
Rating: Summary: You will live in this novel while reading it! Review: I have been reading historical novels for some time now and this is by far the BEST and MOST CAPIVATING novel I have ever read. (I have read all of Penman's and I am eagerly awaiting the next.) From the beginning where Edmund finds a lost michevious Dickon in the bramble bushes, through the physical battles and emotional wars between Ned and Warwick, into the personal triumphs and seemingly perpetual disappointments and betrayals of Dickon and Anne that finally end the Plantagenet Dynasty this novel will keep you spellbound and really make you feel like you have just lived a part of history.
While reading this novel I felt as if I were sucked into the pain, anguish, joy, sadness, elation, and betrayal of the characters.
YOU MUST READ THIS NOVEL! ALL I CAN SAY IS "WRITE FASTER! & THANK YOU SHARON! - WHEN IS YOUR NEXT BOOK COMING OUT?"
Rating: Summary: Outstanding. Incredible. Wonderful Review: The best historical fiction I've ever read. And for once Richard is portrayed in historical light rather than Tudor slander. I LOVE this book, have ordered three copies for friends and family.
Rating: Summary: the best book I've ever read, un-put-downable! Review: I was recommended this book by my school library having said I wanted a historical book. As I read more and more of it, I became caught up in the plot, falling in love with Richard and found myself wishing that just for once, he could win. I smiled for chapters after Edward beat the Lancastrians and cried when Richard was finally betrayed at the battle of Bosworth. The book had me enthralled from the first chapter and I saw an entirely new perspective of the history of my own country. This brilliant book brings all the great magnates of medieval England to life and shows the betrayals, loyalties and the huge sacrifices that men have made for power up superbly. (I even ended up wishing that there were guys as valient and chivalrous as this depiction of Richard III around still today! )
