Rating: Summary: Great stories by 4 Brothers!! Review: Gotta Be Real was excellent!! I enjoyed all the stories but my favorite was I'm Still Waiting by Colin Channer. The love story unfolds in beautiful Jamaica and you can just imagine being there swaying to the music. The characters are intense and their lives are intriguing. Readers are able to glimpse the culture, music, and sensuality of Jamaica. Let's hope a novel is developed from this story!
Rating: Summary: Something for Everyone Review: There's something for every one in this collaboration, from the simplest reading of Eric, Marcus, and E. Lynn, to the more in depth by Colin. As a fan of all four authors, I don't have a favorite, but acknowledge each one's individual style. Eric succeeds at his usual flavor for dialogue, Marcus makes his point with his sensitive male point of view, E. Lynn has the snazzy playful characters, and last but not least, Colin successfuly explores the minds and deepest desires of his male and female characters alike.
Rating: Summary: Ok guys, let's make these short stories into some novels.... Review: Got To Be Real was not only the most captivating novel of short stories I have read but also the most exciting. I couldn't put the book down! It goes without saying I knew what to expect from Mr. Harris nothing short of superb, after all he's my favorite author, and Mr. Dickey nothing short of stimulating. On the other hand, Mr. Channer and Mr. Major I hadn't read but in the end I am proud to say I was very pleased. It's good to see four brothers using the talents GOD gave them. Keep doing what you all do best.... writing.
Rating: Summary: Got To Be Real Review: Hey, This book rocks. Overall I enjoyed all the authors take on their different style of writing and how they all view and discovers love or being in love. Although I have read all of Mr. Harris's books and most of Mr. Dickey's and first time reader of Marcus Majors, I love their styles. However, Colin Channer came on the scene with his first novel which I thought was magnificent. Now joining with these other authors has even pull him out to the fore front of being recognized as an established writer. In, I'm Still Waiting Mr. channer has gotten into the minds of his characters and made them real, full of life, magnificent personalities and lots of un-finished love business. He has given us hope of love lost and found. Making it possible to go back from the begining of when things were great and make it right, even though it might not last. Micheal and Mia can attested to what real love's about. Times has passed and years have been added to what was once young; yet they found pleasure and a comfort zone that never die and although rocky in the begining, they found a common place and it worked. The discriptiveness of all the places in I'm Still Waiting are real, alive, makes you want to go and see for yourself. All the characters are unique and exciting in their own way. They lived up to their roles and made the reader wants to know them and be their friends, confidants, and counselors. Colin Channer has again delivered a masterful piece of work, and I hope he will be doing this for a very long time to come.
Rating: Summary: " got to be real " a message to behold!!! Review: "got to be real" ummm, a wonderful and exciting piece of material. I think the book has covered a wide range of writing styles and material. Each authour captured a part of the reader and allowed them to relax, relate and release. My personal ranking would be E. Lynn Harris, Eric Jerome Dickey, Marcus Major and Colin Channer. I think as time reveals Colin Channer will make his mark and excel at the literary level of his peers. I look forward to hearing from these gentleman in the very near future. I also, appalaud the New American Library (a division of Penguin Putnam, Inc) for publishing this work!! Please purchase this work for your personal library as well as share a copy with a friend. Excellent choice for a local book club. Smiles blkgold95
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Review: I loved this book. I have to chime in with everyone else: Marcus Major was the standout author in this book. It was so clever of him to go back to the courting of Kenya by Amir (characters from his book "Good Peoples"), and we got an opportunity to know them better as they were minor characters in "Good Peoples." I wish he had saved this story for a full book, but I know I'll see more of the Moore men in the future... *smiles* E. Lynn Harris' story was my second favorite. He explored a pretty controversial practice in a unique way and made them sympathetic characters. I found it entertaining and thought-provoking. Harris never disappoints!!!!!! *smiles* I was a bit disappointed with EJ Dickey & Colin Channer's stories. I don't know if it was because i was reading all of the stories back-to-back on the plane, but I never really connected with the characters in Eric & Colin's stories. I don't think it would be fair to say anything too negative about these stories when I read the entire book in one sitting on a plane. I may have just been tired or maybe stories weren't as strong as Marcus & E. Lynn's... However, this was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. I am so proud to see black men writing stories of love and life as we all experience at one time or another. Please keep sharing our stories!
Rating: Summary: Much love to the brothas! Review: When I saw this book on the stands I was immediately excited at the prospect of four African American male authors combining their talents within the cover of one book. I snapped up "Got To Be Real" and hummed with anticipation all the way home. In my opinion, the outstanding story here is by Marcus Major. I got so wrapped up in this love story that I ran to get my copy of "Good Peoples" to see what eventually happened between Kenya and Amir, as Amir also turns up in this novel as the main character's brother. E. Lynn Harris does a fine job with his story, as usual, but I have to say I was not feeling Eric Jerome Dickey or Colin Channer. EJD's story of was so busy being atmospheric and descriptive that the actual love seemed forced, and I just could not get into Channer's tale no matter how hard I tried. I couldn't give this book any less than 4 stars out of respect to these talented authors. You may love all four stories, but I'll be you'll come away hungry for Marcus Major's newest book.
Rating: Summary: A new fan of Marcus Major Review: Got To Be Real, should have been a full length novel by Marcus Major. This book is hard to really rate because of the different writing styles of each of the authors. The true gem, is the love story Kenya and Amir by Marcus Major. His writing stood out from the others and deserves the highest rating. Marcus, steals the show from all of the other "famous" authors, with his touching, hearfelt, and sensual plot. You'll forget you're reading a book of short stories, and when you get to the end of Major's story, you'll want to read more about Kenya and Amir. Great job Marcus, a new fan. Rating: Summary: Playing the game of love on an uneven field. Review: Starting with my grading scale of 5 stars are the stories by E. Lynn Harris and Marcus Major. Both included major characters with lots of personality and strong stories. Both should have been complete novels, because they ended too soon. The Eric Jerome Dickey story earned 4 stars because the major players were interesting, yet the romance seemed forced. The search for the embezzler had my attention, and his comuppance at the end was well deserved. The Colin Channer story was a 2. The story was very deep. Too deep. There can't be a nuclear warhead anywhere buried as deep as this story. Too much description of everything surrounding Patience, Michael, and Mia, and the endless flashbacks (some interesting) made for a very long short story. All in all, there is something for everyone.
