Summary: The book and movie
Review: "The outlaw Josey Wales" the movie is my favorite western movie. I had not read the book until recently, and found the book as good as the movie. In fact I viewed the movie after reading each chapter and they are almost exactly the same. This story is a story of what our west was like after the civil war. It is a fun and easy read, and you will dread the story being over. A great gift would be the book and the movie for your Western loving friend

Summary: Josey Wales
Review: Absolutely one of the Best Westerns ever written. If you have seen the movie, you will discover a lot of why some of the stuff happened the way it did. I could not put this book down, I read it in two days!

Summary: Like the movie, love the book
Review: And I thought the movie was good. This is one of those books that I picked up because I enjoyed the movie so much. While the movie was very good at accurately tracking the story as told in the book, the book adds so much to the necessarily limited scope of the movie. In addition to this expansion, you get the sequel in the form of the "Vengeance Trail." Certainly any fan of the movie didn't really expect Josey to sit back and quietly grow old on that Texas ranch. Well neither did the author. In the "Vengeance Trail, Josey faces new adversaries even more brutal than those in the first book. Not to worry though, Josey finds himself up to the task, but even so, he gets some help from a very unexpected ally. Bottom line, if you like westerns, you'll love this book.

Summary: Gone to Texas is Great!
Review: Because there are two novels under one title (cover)I will address both. Gone to Texas is a 5 star western. It realistic, inspirational and an easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Vengence Trail is a three star, just as well written as GTT but the plot just isnt as varied and it gets a bit wearisome. The book is well worth the price for Gone to Texas!

Summary: outstanding, if you liked the movie buy the book
Review: Clint Eastwood came close to doing Carters Tough Gaunt character justice in The Outlaw Josey Wales. This book brings you deeper into the world of a man with nothing to loose and no fear of death.

Summary: VENGEANCE AND SURVIVAL!!!
Review: Having just finished The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales I will soon begin to read Gone To Texas. Carter portrays the Missouri Bushwackers and American Indians in a sympathetic light without the syrupy romanticism of Political Correctness. The Old West slang helps the reader get into the mindset of the previous Century. I strongly encourage this book -- and unlike the movie --the chess pieces do not fall into place with a tidy resolution.

Summary: Josey Wales: Two Westerns : Gone To Texas/the Vengence Trai
Review: I have read and owned copies of one or the other, but not in the same volume. I found this medium an excellent way to continue reading about the characters. Forrest Carter does a splendid job of blending history with fiction. His historical research is top notch. I highly recommend this novel for the student of history, as well as the casual western reader.

Summary: 2nd Greatest Western
Review: I'd rank this one right below Owen Wister's The Virginian on my own list of all-time greatest westerns. If I'd read this book two years ago my son would've been named Josey Wales Lambert. Every Southerner, no, every American should read it, digest it, and live by the same code. Yeeeha!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Wonderful Western!
Review: If you enjoyed Robert Parker's multi-genre work in Gunslinger's Rhapsody, you will apreciate this fine novel. Carter uses a traditional approach with the classic recipe, but his narrative is powerful and authentic. The dialogue nearly jumps from the pages. While Clint Eastwood is a very talented actor, you will soon envision an entirely different man when you dig into these novels!
