Review: This is a must for everyone who wants to look beyond the borders of their ordinary life. Although after reading this book it may leed to more questions than you had upfront, it certainly makes you a richer person in the long run; at least that's how I feel.

Review: Narcissus and Goldmund was the first book by Hesse I read. While reading it, I did not think that this would become one of my favorite books. After a while I realized there was more to it than meets the eye. This is a book that will keep you thinking long after you read the last page.

Summary: Superlatives are inadequate
Review: Few books ever written, much less in the twentieth century, have ever contained such beautiful characters. It is true they are archetypes -- they stand for something rather than are living, breathing, bleeding humans, but they illustrate the human participation in these archetypes (academic/esthete and lusty adventurer/experientalist) so clearly, and point up the folly in following one path. Whether or not the philosophy (neatly delivered, and insidiously convincing) appeals to you, the characters are Narcissus and Goldmund alone are worth the read. In final praise: I read it once at sixteen, and I have never forgotten it.

Review: This is the type of book that sneaks up on you and before you know, you feel a great amount of inner peace. Then you think a little more and you suffer from a great amount of inner turmoil. Then you think even more and you feel a great amount of inner peace,...etc. It is funny, sad and most of all beautiful. I would recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Character Development at it's best!
Review: This has to be one of the best books I have read in my lifetime! It is a great story filled with so much desire, and passion, but interestingly enough it also served as a moral story to me identifying what really is of upmost importance in our lives. It is as much a love story as it is an interesting comparison between two almost opposite character's, them being Narcissus and Goldmund. Each of us have a choice in our lives, to live the role of the academic, or the one of the spirit. Any one of these paths requires total commitment, by the individual, and each takes you to a different destiny. Make the first choice! Buy the book! Then enjoy reading this masterpiece. This has to be one of Germany's best writings. It is so beautifully composed, and it tries to teach you something. You will not be dissapointed, simply a great read!

Summary: Don't read it if you wanna your life to be mediocre.
Review: This is an amazing masterpiece. I read it in Chinese when I was in China and at that time I was feeling lost in pursuit of the meaning of life. The story changed my life and I am so influenced by Goldmund. Since I came to a school in Oklahoma, I've been looking for it for a long time. 'cause I don't know its English name and the name of author at that time. Recently, after reading the novel -- "Siddhartha", I suddenly realized that they must be written by the same author. Thanks Amazon.com for giving me a chance to find the book, see so many readers of "Narcissus and Goldmund" and share their comments. The story is fovever on my mind.

Summary: an incredible must read
Review: I read this work by Hesse as I had read many books during my time in high school- while working at a popcorn stand in the airport in Austin, Texas. I must say, unfortunately I burned quite a few batches during the few days I spent reading N&G. N&G is one of the most influental books that I have ever read, and it is a definite must read.

Review: I've read other Hesse books after this one including Siddhartha and The Glass Bead Game (both have been given more praise and prestige than this one) but none of Hesse's other books engrossed me the way this one has. I read it again and again.
