Rating: Summary: Kane & Abel Review: This book is one of the best fiction book you'll ever get to read. It's so interesting and you can not possibly forecast what will be happening in the pages to come and that is excatly how you compare a well-written book with bad ones. Archer, one of the greatest storytellers of our century, created two characters in which you can fit in quite easily - their names are Kane and Abel and they've been born in the same day but in different parts of the world and yes destiny arranged for them to meet with each other..."What is your favorite book"-I ask everyone I meet and "Kane and Abel" was the answer of my manager. Only now when I've read it I realized why my manager chose "Kane and Abel" instead of millions of other great books! Highly Recommended!

Rating: Summary: Undeniably Talented Author! Review: My 'hats off' to Jeffrey Archer! He's spun an ultimately very depressing tale of two extremely intelligent and talented men who wasted much of their lives, and especially their final years in foolish conflict that needlessly causes alienation between a son and daughter, etc, etc. The fact that I was depressed by the book is again a tribute to the author, who made me care even though a lot of the plot elements were hard to understand or hard to swallow. An example of 'hard to understand' was Kane's over the top reaction to his son's marriage. Up to that point I had been led to believe that it had only been Abel who had been dominated by hatred toward the other. Kane was worried about Abel but had often shown begrudging admiration for him, never mindless hatred. And why, when the son and daughter were telling their respective parents of their upcoming marriage, did neither explain the unusual circumstances of falling in love prior to learning of the relationship between their fathers, rather then leaving their fathers to think that there was some sort of knowing betrayal in them having come together? And, speaking of hard to swallow, the two main characters, both filled with patriotic duty, independently join the military and the one who is in charge of food services finds himself on the same battlefield as the man he hates and rescues him from among hundreds of casulties and neither ever know who the other was!!! Or, their son and daughter randomly meet in Bloomingdales and fall in love?! It's almost like Archer had been challenged by a friend, "I bet you can't come up with a bunch of implausible plot twists and inconsistencies and still write a book that practically everyone will love", and he said, "Oh yeah, I'll bet you I can, and I'll title it Kane and Abel". And again, hats off to Mr Archer, for he indeed won the bet!
Rating: Summary: One of the few fiction books that you WON'T put down. Review: Jeffrey Archer has written many international best sellers and this is one of his best works followed by the sequel to this book - 'The Prodigal Daughter'. Jeffrey Archer himself has quite an impressive background in real life. In 1969, he became the youngest member of the House of Commons in United Kingdom. This particular book could have been based on a true story as it is mentioned at the beginning of the book that this book was made possible due to two men whose identities cannot be revealed. The story - is about two men William Kane and Abel Rosnovski who come from opposite backgrounds and make it big in America. Kane is born and raised in a wealthy banking family while Abel is a poor Polish immigrant that survives extreme hardship before ending up in America. Due to his own ability and his background in the banking industry, Kane makes becomes a powerful force in that industry while Abel through his sheer determination and ruthless attitude builds an empire in the hotel industry. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding caused by a negative encounter at the beginning of their careers, they become sworn enemies and it seems like nothing can change it. Even when Kane's son and Abel's daughter fall in love, get married, and have a child, it doesn't seem to influence these two men to overcome their intense hatred for each other. This book is extremely well written and Jeffrey Archer has a way of telling a story where you can't stop reading till you reach the end. The vocabulary is not that difficult but the author uses his extraordinary writing style to tell the story as if you are right there where it's all happening. It has been a common experience among Jeffrey Archer fans that they literally can't put this book down till they get to the end. The other common experience is that Jeffrey Archer fans read this book again and again every few years and it still keeps their interest. It is true in my own case also where this was the only fiction book in my life that kept me awake till 6 a.m. in the morning when I started reading at 10 p.m. the previous night. I was a teenager and got in trouble with my Mom for staying up all night to read this book (even though it was my summer vacation). I recently read this book and felt the same sense of awe and inspiration that I did almost 20 years back when I first read the book. I have read it a couple more times in these 20 years and it is always the same amazing experience. That's why I decided to spend a few minutes and write this review to share my experiences with others. If there is one new fiction author whose books you want to try, you won't regret picking Jeffrey Archer. The best book to start with is this one - Kane and Abel. After this book, the pleasure continues if you read the sequel which is equally engrossing 'The Prodigal Daughter'. The perfect book to read on a vacation but not on a plane as you would regret not being to finish it. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: I re-read this every few years Review: This is the kind of book you don't want to put down, and when you get to the end ... buy the sequel, Prodigal Daughter. I pick up these books every few years, and enjoy them each time.
Rating: Summary: Kane & Abel is one of the best. Review: I must admit that with the invention of the computer, I quit reading like I used to. I happened to pick up Kane & Abel off my bookshelf. It was about 20 years old and I had never read it. I opened it and never did put it down. Archer is a master. This book is a "must read".
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read! Review: Once I started this book I could not put it down! It was a little difficult at first, keeping all of the characters straight and trying to figure out they would eventually come together, but it was well worth it. I would highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Still one of the best after all these years Review: This was my first experience with Archer and what a lasting impression he made. The first line itself caught my attention and I was hooked by the second page. There are many things that happen in this novel which spans many decades. We also get a brief history lesson of the key events of the United States as the story unfolds. The narrative style is clear and fluent. The story stands out after all these years. Archer is a master at keeping the pages turning.
Rating: Summary: Masterful Storytelling! Exquistie Pace! Review: This novel is amazing! I do not usually read novels in this genre, but one day when I was in my early 20s, I just sat down and started reading it. I loved it then and always thought of going back and reading it, but with starting doctoral work in English I never seemed to find the time. I just started re-reading this book again (ten years later) three days ago and once again, I don't want to put it down. It is a thrilling, compelling, moving story that draws you in from the opening page when a young trapper finds a newborn baby lying beside the dead body of his mother. It is the classic story of "brother" against "brother" with so many interesting twists and turns. It is about war, about honor, and about relationships. If you are looking for a can't-put-it-down read, then pick up this incredible novel by a masterful contemporary storyteller.
Rating: Summary: Great author Review: This was my introduction to Jeffrey Archer. A client had jokingly asked if I had ever read the "Kane & Abel" story and I laughed, assuming he was using the standard Biblical reference that I had heard all of my life. One day, I happened across the title and was hooked. Jeffrey Archer is an incredible author who has the ability to weave a tale that pulls you in completely. He writes the works that renders you sleepless...I found myself pulling myself back out of bed at night just to read through this one in one day. If you haven't read Jeffrey Archer, this is a great start!
