Rating: Summary: This is vintage Anne George Review: Mary Alice is about to marry her 4th. husband. The difference is that her intended, Sheriff Virgil Stuckey, is neither old nor rich, unlike his 3 predecessors. This time Mary Alice appears to be marrying for love! To celebrate this august occasion, members of Virgil and Mary Alice's family attend a benefit to help raise money for the refurbishment of Vulcan, the majestic statue which has mooned--er--loomed over Birmingham for many years. Part of the entertainment is a chorus line of 30 Elvis impersonators, some of them Virgil's relatives. One of them is killed during the performance and falls into the orchestra pit. The spotlight of suspicion falls on the Elvises, Virgil's family and even Patricia Anne herself. The Sisters do a little undercover work but are baffled when they discover that their leads are false ones. Finally, in a climactic scene the murderer is uncovered and the Sisters narrowly avoid being victims themselves. Anne George has written a delightful series which is always warm and humorous. Her fans mourn her passing and will certainly miss their annual adventure with Mouse and Sister. Fortunately we have eight wonderful Sister books to read and cherish and to remember her by. (Please forgive the preposition at the end, Mouse.)
Rating: Summary: The Southern Sisters Have Left the Building.... Review: Reading "Murder Boogies with Elvis" was indeed bittersweet, knowing that this was the last gift given to us by Anne George. It is the 8th and final book in the tremendously funny Southern Sisters mystery series. When larger than life Mary Alice starts planning her 4th wedding, a blending of the families is to be expected. Every family has their quirks so gaining an Elvis "stepson" and son-in-law doesn't bother Mary Alice a bit. Unfortunately, the Elvis "chorus-line" is met with a brutal murder and Patricia Anne is hauled off to jail by yet another one of her former students! As ever, this book is filled with some of the most hilarious dialogues and twisting of plots. It is especially relevant for those over 30, but readers of all ages will enjoy this series. Anne George and her wonderful books will be greatly missed....

Rating: Summary: More from Sister and Mouse Review: Thank you Anne George for more wonderful antics from Sister and Mouse. I laughed out loud and chuckled (as quietly as possible) throughout this book. How could these two get into so many tangles and continue to bounce back? Must be that clever Anne George who writes such personality into Mouse and Sister that I want to know all of them. How will I survive without Anne George's books? I will re-read the others in the series over and over again. These books and the girls' antics do not get old -- I just love reminiscing, don't you? Thank you to Anne George for writing such wonderful books, and thank you to my sister for recommending this series to me.

Rating: Summary: Never Were There Such Devoted Sisters Review: The Poor Old Vulcan is receiving CPR and the mismatched sisters have the front row seats as 30 Elvis impersonators dirty boogie to Jailhouse Rock. Ooops, make that 29. With the usual kooky cast of characters, the sisters plunge into murder and mayhem for one last time. But the "plot" of the story continues to take second stage behind the delightful characters and absolutely amazing dialogue in this charmingly original set of cozies, lovingly and realistically set in the colorful southern landscape of Birmingham, Alabama. The lovely late Anne George keeps her tongue firmly and cleverly in her cheek as she dances the sisters through their farewell waltz. Where else do you get English lessons and instructions in proper decorum and manners with a healthy dose of sass? Or a stranger than appears on your steps to impregnate your niece? The book seems fraught with the author's glimpses of her own mortality. She didn't really make it to spring in Birmingham, for unfortunately it really was late winter. Not only am I going to miss the wonderful spirit of fun, I sure am worried about Fred and hope that he doesn't marry Tiffany -- and what will become of poor Woofer and Muffin? Hopefully the purple boots will give Mary Alice the courage to go on without her Mouse. Somehow. Oh! There is even a bit of a surprise for the reader who will even get to know who really did dirty-boogie with Elvis.

Rating: Summary: A Real Delight Review: What a wonderful novel! As this is the first George novel I have read, I am so disappointed to learn that this is the last in the Southern Sisters Mystery series. It has been a verrrry long time since I read a book with such charming and delightful character. Even the murderer is eccentrically charming in his own way. George combines Southern grace, wit and obsession into a tale of murderous intrigue. Two elderly (but don't you dare call them that!) sisters have an uncomfortable knack for stumbling across murders, even when they are out for an evening of enjoyment. They seem to have the same knack for stumbling across clues that solve those crimes. But the formula murder mystery has little to do with what makes this novel so enjoyable. The two sisters are exact opposites, one petite, more withdrawn, and in a long-term marriage ; her sister is large, gregariously outspoken, and working on her fourth nuptials. Each is quirky and surrounded by neighbors and acquaintances who are every bit as unique. In this novel, the murder victim is a mysterious but highly praised Russian dancer who is performing, oddly enough, as an Elvis impersonator when he is murder. Twists and turns throw red herrings to the reader before settling on its cuprit. Humor abounds without being offensive. This is a true gem. As a tough rater, I drop the book a star because of it's formula plot. But I would rather read more books in this series (if they are all as good as this one) than some of the books to which I have given a full 5 stars. This is good clean fun!
Rating: Summary: English teacher laughs herself silly! Review: What great stress relief to come home from a long day of teaching English to indulge myself in a chapter of the Southern Sisters before bed each night. I highly recommend it to any southern lady who would appreciate the sisters' culture. This book was my first introduction to the sisters, and I'm about to start my second one right now. I look forward to many more. What a great break from Oprah's book club! Sometimes I'd laugh so hard, my husband would ask, "What ARE you laughing at?" It was one of those, "you wouldn't understand. . .you'd have to read the whole story.." What a genius Anne George is. We'll surely miss her. I've already told several friends about the books and plan to buy a couple as Christmas gifts! Lest we take ourselves too seriously!
