Rating: Summary: A book that will ALWAYS be on my bookshelf Review: I can't remember who turned me on to this book, but I'm very grateful. It's such an excellent book--lots of humor & honesty, wonderful glimpses of southern small-town life, and some painful but accurate observations about race relations at the time. There are a thousand good messages about love, family tradition, pride, growing up, compassion.... you name it, but all delivered very well and with more humor than you can imagine. I was so annoyed that it came to an end--thank heaven Mr. Sams wrote and equally funny and wonderful sequel, the Whisper of the River. If you liked Cold Sassy Tree, definitely read this one. And vice versa!
Rating: Summary: One of my All-time Favorites Review: I first read this book ten years ago for my 12th-grade AP English class, and it still is one of my favorites. I have bought several copies, but I keep giving them to others to read, so again, I find myself buying another! Once you get into this book, it becomes a part of you forever, especially if you are from the South. While I was reading the trilogy, I found myself using Porter's language and seeing my world through his eyes. This novel is perfect for young adults who are beginning to appreciate good literature, but still need terrific story-telling to draw them in. It's also perfect for older adults who need to laugh and get a refreshing perspective on life.
Rating: Summary: The story and the readings by the author was so realistic Review: I had seen movies about long ago but never realized how life was in the South. The Author tells these stories of pain, pleasure and mischief and they are so interesting. I didn't want the tapes to end. One of my all time favorites.
Rating: Summary: I will forever suggest this book to all me friends! Review: I had to write a term paper on Ferrol Sams and his works of literature. I found that I can no longer start a book without having Sams' works pop into my mind. Sams has a unique voice in his works that portray the vivid imaginations of a child and accurately detail the experiences of life and maturing. I found I could relate to a work that was autobiographical but not in any way an autobiography. It made the works more personal and thus more interesting for the younger generations. If you have not read the works then by all means do so. I promise you that you will not forget them.
Rating: Summary: Are there more books coming out? Review: I loved this book so much. I grew up in the south and this book, as well as the others in the series, gives me such a feeling of home. It is one of the best that I have read. Will there be another book in the series? I can't wait to read it.
Rating: Summary: One Great book of a Great Trilogy Review: I recently recieved the Sams trilogy as a graduation gift and I have enjoyed them immensly. Despite starting medical school I have not been able to put the books down. I have read all of them in succession and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking a thoughtful and completely entertaining set of books.
Rating: Summary: A Captivating Piece of American Fiction Review: Run with the Horsemen is a captivating piece of American fiction that keeps the reader anxious to find out what is going to happen next. I found it difficult to stop reading the book. As a South Carolinian, I can attest to the fact that the southern dialect was written perfectly. Reading the book made me feel as if I were listening to my grandfather's tales of his childhood excursions along the Catawba River in South Carolina. What an excellent piece of literature! I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: The most entertaining book that I have found. Review: Run with the Horsemen, along with the two sequels, are the most entertaining books that I have found. The book is the story of Porter Osborne Jr's hilarious Southern upbringing. There are encounters with everything from flatulent mules to watermelon patches. Ferrol Sams is a master storyteller. I have recommended the book to numerous family members and friends. They all give it rave reviews and have passed it on to other lucky readers.
Rating: Summary: Children's Bedtime Book Review: The book is nice but very sleep-inducing. I't wholesome enough for children, so it would make good bedtime reading. While the overall flavor is similar to the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, Run with the Horseman is less successful than that series at eliciting an emotional response from the reader. I never developed an affection for any of the characters.
Rating: Summary: Engrossing and entertaining Review: The style is relaxed, yet flows easily. Unlike so many other "remembrances" this writer doesn't get stuck in details. I especially appreciated the use of (undefined) southern slang, which made perfect sense in context. I picked it up at a used bookstore and it made me long for more of his style.
