Summary: The Beat Standard
Review: What disappointed me about this book was that I was expecting the usual drug drawl beatnik writers often have as their claim to fame. Keruoac has no drug-induced fantasyland like Interzone. His writing does not read like poetry, it is straight narrative. He is indeed the best story-teller of the Beat Generation because his writing is so clear. Keruoac didn't do drugs in the excessive amount that the other Beat writers did. "On the Road" is fiction, but it is based on events in Keruoac's life, like the majority of his writing. It is easy to connect the characters to real people. For instance, "Old Bull Lee" is really William S. Burroughs. Part of the fun of reading this book can be connecting the characters and events to real life.
As I'm sure you've heard many people say, if you have any interest in the Beat Generation, "On the Road" is a must-read.
