Rating: Summary: um.....boring......predictable......stupid Review: I don't mean to be rude, but I HATED the main character of this book. She was completely pathetic and not even developed by Jewell. This book was very predictable and not a fun read. I recommend books like "Dating Big Bird" or even "Local Girls" for a fun read for women, that isn't degrading.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly well written and fun Review: I will admit to being extremely picky, and I was delighted to find that Jewell's novel is well written and fun to read. Especially post-Bridget Jones, I have slogged through far too many badly written, slightly offensive, overly contrived novels. Ralph's Party was a welcome relief. The story a just the tiniest bit over the top, and Jewell's style is a perfect complement. Jewell not only writes believable dialogue, but her prose is witty and engaging. Similarly, the story is addictive and just this side of too-clever. As the narrative winds its way between the two storylines, the plot picks up speed builds suspense. If you're looking for an easy read that will bring a series of grins to your face, I highly recommend this novel.
Rating: Summary: It is a Guy's World Review: I simply wanted to say that this book is nothing like Trials of Tiffany Trott or Making Minty Malone(Books others bought). They are humorous and sweet but I found Ralph's Party to be coarse and no fun. As the title implies it is about Ralph but I never liked him and I think the little humor that there is directed more to men. I couldn't even finish it but I did skim thru to the end and I really don't think I missed a thing. Any ladies out there who like Isabel Wolff I think Marian Keyes is more our style.
Rating: Summary: Giggle-inducing Review: Okay, okay. This book is not one that I would normally give such a good review for but, the fact that it made me laugh really surprised me. The way Jem tried to pretend that she didn't have certain feelings was funnier than most deft attempts authors take at trying to convey what the female mind is all about! A read for anyone stuck between two guys (or friends, for that matter)!
Rating: Summary: Fun, Feel Good Book Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not a great, profound literary work, but I had such a good time reading it. I liked the author's writing style, and I loved the many London references. I was a little annoyed by one of the main characters - Jem - and her silly ideas of destiny, but because she was not the only character whose perspective the reader has the benefit of, her annoying character quirks are forgiveable. I loved the way the author glided from one character's point of view to another's and I felt that she deftly created three dimensional personalities in each of them. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys light novels about single people in their late twenties/early thirties.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: This is a great variation on the Bridget Jones/High Fidelity "young unmarried Brits" minigenre. The characters (with the exception of Cheri) are very realistically drawn, and their motivations are so true-to-life. I agree with many others who think this is a movie in the making! I finished it in two sittings, so driven was I to keep reading. Though the climax does fall prey to a bit of implausibility in order to wrap up all the loose ends, the strength of the characters' thoughts and feelings make you forgive that lapse in order to reach the (happy) ending. I also must say that the interior monologue on fat was absolutely wonderful-- a techinically superb piece of writing.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Entertaining Book Review: I found this book to be not only insightful, but also very entertaining. The characters are so personable and realistic that being friends with them is imaginable. Lisa Jewell provides a wonderful look into 3 different types of relationships and friendships. A book that you will not want put down!
Rating: Summary: Cute but . . . Review: This would have been a cute little read if not for all the emphasis on drug use. My God, if all Brits really smoke that much pot, no wonder they can't get their economy out of the gutter, or reduce long term unemployment. Teenagers experimenting with drugs is just par for the course, but adults continuing with drugs is just pathetic. If I could have skipped the drug stuff, I would have enjoyed this book.
Rating: Summary: Funny and Sweet -- Perfect Beach Reading Review: Ralph's party is a well-written, amusing, enjoyable story about a group of 20ish/30ish people who live near, or are somehow connected to, an apartment complex in London. Their stories are quite entertaining and told with a gentle wit. The main characters are Smith and Ralph, two roommates who add a third, Jem, a kooky and attractive young woman who believes that she is destined to marry one of them. This novel being a romantic comedy, she of course winds up with the wrong one at first, but ultimately sees the romantic truth (as do the other characters in the novel) at, you guessed it, Ralph's party. This book is a quick, non-taxing read, but I really enjoyed it. I kept thinking it would make a great movie, just as long as Hugh Grant somehow gets a part. If you are looking for a light, entertaining novel, Ralph's party is for you. Have fun.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read. Couldn't put it down. Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great characters, and I love how all the stories weave together... and that it all happens under one roof. I wouldn't be surprised if this got snatched up for a screenplay.
