Rating: Summary: A spectacular myriad of love and life with dreams not forgot Review: just wanted to let everyone know that JW also has another book out, called Boating for Beginners. It is very difficult to find. I had to have a friend bring it back from England last year, but if you love her stuff, you will love this one, too!
Rating: Summary: Real charachters; fictional readers Review: A masterpiece of literature. Structuraly innovative and creative; thematically enchanting, but the most brilliant creation of the author are the characters of the novel: Vilanelle and Henri. They are real in the paper, converting the reader into a fictional entity. The work challenges the reader to truly consider if what we touch is 'reality' or if what we feel and dream are really 'reality'.
Rating: Summary: One of the top 10 books I have ever read!! Review: The passion is a fascinating and captivating book. It is worth reading alone in order to appreciate Winterson's mastery of the English language and her ability spin picture perfect descriptions through the use of original metaphors. Her insight into human relationships and her ability to create two completely different yet credible characters provide the reader with an additional treat. The Passion is realistic enough so that anyone can relate to its plot, yet true dreamers will be enchanted by its elements of fantasy. Winterson is without doubt a woman of rare intelligence and insight. Read this book!
Rating: Summary: This is a complex, beautiful & intelligently written novel. Review: I have had the good luck to be able to read all of Jeanette Winterson's books, and this is far and above my favorite. The evocotive (sp?) use of time and place, the sensual language, the wonderfully imaginative story line...I was hooked from the first page. I wonder why it has never been made into a movie...probably all for the best.
Rating: Summary: Passion is hardly the word for it.... Review: being an italian-american, i have always held a certain place in my heart for all things italian. this book has certainly made its way there, not only because of where it took place, but the mellifluous and incredible language used to write it. It was almost as if i were reading a long poem, not meant for my eyes, but only for those of the gondoliere's daughter...i felt a kinship with her...a stirring in my blood so to say...i cannot explain it...there are no words to describe this book without insulting its beautiful prose...i have yet to read anything else by this author, but i am sure that i will sometime soon...
Rating: Summary: Winterson's best novel! Review: I love this book! I have had the chance to teach it twice in college-level British literature courses and my students also love it. I have had some of them thank me for introducing Winterson to them. I thank my husband for my own introduction to her. This was one of the first gifts he ever gave me. It's a sumptuous book.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring. Intense. Surprising. Erotic. Fantastical. Review: I have had an awful case of writer's block for years. Jeanette Winterson made me want to write again. The Passion is one of the most creative, beautiful, courageous works I've read in years. I was spellbound. If you're looking for an ordinary read, this is not the book for you. Prepare to be thrown for a loop and question reality. Winterson helped me aquire an even greater love for language. I curled up with The Passion and was mesmerized. If you have a heart for adventure and intensity, you won't be dissappointed.
Rating: Summary: Arrogant lesbian trash! Review: If only this were true. The disquieting thing is that she (J.W) has got under the skin of a small French man and can tell us all with such grace and profundity what it's like to be male, to be male and in love, to be betrayed, to be excited, to be lost. She has a portfolio of emotions awaiting you in this little book which will blow you away. Almost a hybrid of G.G.Marquez and Alan Bennett,it is the most beautiful book I think I've ever read, and the arrogant lesbian trash that claims her for themselves (they know who they are) will never know how much pleasure this can bring to boys and girls of all descriptions.
Rating: Summary: Read it while travelling Review: For who will need a weather vane when we travel with the wind. A novel to read when lifes options extend before you and anything might be possible. A book which is likely to appear in your life when Passion is about to envelop you. Buy it and see. This book precipitated the love affair of my life....
Rating: Summary: Fuzzy images like memories of a dream Review: This was an excellent effort by an obviously talented writer. Her style is reflective of fin-du-siecle, 20th Century Post Deconstructive literature. [Is there such a thing as Post Deconstructive, yet? I'm beginning to think there is.] Obviously informed by G.G. Marquez's mystical qualities, which is in turn influenced by J.L. Borges, Winterson somehow leaves the reader with the same kind of feeling that Passion itself does when it washes over our footprints in the sand: an orgasmic quaking from the heals to the pate, climaxing in a shuddering sigh that leaves one breathless. And when the last page is turned and the lungs are expunged, the images of the text have faded in their clarity, but the carved trace of feelings that are left are unfulfillable and ephemeral, but they fill those who read it utterly.
