Summary: "Bukowski is one of the 5 American writers that I have read"
Review: Yes, Bukowski tells it like it is and probably has very dirty fingernails but to suggest that he is one of the top five American writers of all time is.... wildly amusing. Hey, I'm not opposed to vulgarity, but how about some artistry and vision. Pick up Bret Easton Ellis or William Burroughs (both Americans.) You'd do well by Joseph Heller as well... now there's a writer.

On Bukowski? He's found a niche and written some books. If you scrape through the grime of his suped-up journal entries there is occasionally real beauty and understanding... something that you can walk away with. I'm afraid, however, that my fingernails are too mangled and caked from clawing through Bukowski's language to pick up much more of his stuff.

And by the way, Bukowski doesn't even like Dostoevsky.
