Rating: Summary: Great Book - Loved Reading It Review: A unique approach to a very interesting subject - I was intrigued by the humane depiction of the practices that seem so barbaric to us today and insight on what motivated that civilization. The past/present views of the geography and culture were not only entertaining, but have inspired me to visit the ruins of Palenque with a more animated perception of its rich history.

Rating: Summary: If you liked "Aztec," you'll like Place of Mirrors Review: I have been reading mostly non-fiction books about the Maya for years. Although, what first got me inspired was reading Gary Jennings' Aztec, also an historical novel. Place of Mirrors has a similar quality...full of well-researched insights into the ancient Maya, but clothed in a story that makes very interesting reading. If you like good stories and are at all curious about the Maya...check it out.

Rating: Summary: Great Book - Loved Reading It Review: I thought the book was terrific. I love reading about history when it's 'cloaked' in a story. And the story itself was a lot of fun. I was lost in ancient Mexico and culture. I highly recommend it and have already passed it on to friends.
Rating: Summary: don't bother Review: ms criscenzo should write of travels in mexico only, and leave the romantic fiction to others.
Rating: Summary: Place of Mirrors: History, Travel and Romance Review: Place of Mirrors is a fine novel which fills the bill for historians, romance novel fans, and travelers.Historians will appreciate author Jeeni Criscenzo's well- researched and well-written novel, Place of Mirrors: Lessons of the Ancient Maya, in which she has presented an accurate portrayal of the lives and lifestyles of the ancient Maya, providing detailed information ranging from day-to-day activities to the exotic and unusual such as the horrifying practice of blood-letting. Romance novel enthusiasts will enjoy the story of Christina Rossi, who travels to Chiapas, Mexico with her 12-year-old daughter in search of clues to events in her own life. Christina mysteriously realizes that she is the reincarnation of the ancient ruler, Pacal of Palenque. Interwoven with Pacal's fortunes and affairs are those of Christina's own life. Place of Mirrors is also a travel book. The author's vivid descriptions of San Cristobal de las Casas, the old colonial city of Chiapas, and of travel through modern-day Maya villages along the rustic mountain roads, are accurate reminders for readers who have been to the area--and enticing for future visitors or armchair tourists.

Rating: Summary: Journey back to a time when gods spoke with men Review: Place of Mirrors is based on my own experiences and extensive research on the Maya, both the ancient civilization and the Maya living in Mesoamerica today.
Many people are curious about the Maya, but there is little availbale that gives a realistic picture of who they were, and still are. So much has been revealed about these
fascinating people in the past few years, with sudden advancements in deciphering their glyphs and exciting new archaeological discoveries. I think there's a reason we are learning these things now when the world is facing such incredible change in every facet of our lives.
When you study the ancient Maya you realize that the impact of dramatic change is not unprecedented. When they realized that their traditional
systems weren't working anymore they ababdoned them. Maybe it's time for us to do the same. The Maya people didn't mysteriously "vaporize" as some would have you believe. Place of Mirrors is a story about real people with much to teach us. I hope you enjoy getting to know them.
