Rating: Summary: The good news is....... Review: In this novel, a young man named Peter Mullen is brutally killed while parking cars at a millionaire's beach house. The police do a hasty investigation and declare that Peter's death is due to suicide or an accident, but Peter's brother Jack knows better. He is in law school and he uses all of his expertise to try to find out the truth. Bad things begin to happen to Jack and his friends as he gets closer to solving the mystery of his brother's death. The good news about this book is that it is very readable and the action moves along well. The setting of East Hampton is an interesting one and the characters are generally well-drawn. The problem is the plots twists at the end which are pretty hard to swallow. If you can suspend your disbelief over the last 100 pages or so, this is an enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Not a deep thiller but an entertaining life like read Review: I'm a true Patterson fan and I find this book really entertaining. To be honest, I feel this book isn't a big thriller but I can actually see this happening in real life. This novel is one of the truely unique compelling stories among Patterson's other works. This book doesn't contain pyshco serial killers on the loose and super sleuths on the heels of his trail. This story is about a death of a young man, Peter who lived among the rich and his brother Paul is trying to find out what really happened to him. Did he really commit suicide or was there foul play involved. When Paul tries to discover the truth it seems like he can't win because the rich are powerful especially in high places and have enough money to make sure Peter's murder was a cover-up. Paul being trained in law himself feels he can't win because of the justice system. He felt that the judicial system had failed him. Previously at an inquest concerning Peter's death. The main suspect named Barry Neubauer who may have been involved mentioned the attorney general's name and the judge declared Peter's death was a suicide. Paul feels he has to goes to drastic measures to have his brother murder's solved. He kidnaps all the people he knows were involved and setup an hodge podge court room and air it live so the whole world can see the truth especially with the evidence that he found. There were parts I may find questionable but hey this is Patterson if you just go along with it. You'll find yourself truely entertained.
Rating: Summary: Lame Review: I agree that this book is a total soap opera. There is very little character development and you just really don't care about the characters. It does feel like a contractual obligation. Better luck next time Patterson!
Rating: Summary: Is it just me or is Patterson really slipping? Review: I'm a huge James Patterson fan but lately he has been really dissapointing me. The last two or three entries in the Alex Cross series are far inferior to his early novels such as Jack & Jill or Along Came a Spider. But, really, The Beach House is about as weak a book as Patterson could write. It's got a decent little setup and some potential for good characters, but about halfway through the book gets so contrived and farfetched, it gets to be a task just to get through the book. It's like Patterson just wrote until he reached a point where he needed a "shocking twist" and then one was randomly thrown in without any real rhyme or reason. A couple of them I'd love to go into detail about because they make virtually no sense at all except for the fact that they were needed to move the plot along, but I'll keep quiet for those of you who'll read the book. It's a quick read like most Patterson books, but you're gonna be dissapointed if you're expecting a lot from this book. If the poor character development and unrealistic plot don't do you in, the poor excuse for an ending will. Wait until this one hits the markdown table before you check it out.
Rating: Summary: Best legal thriller ever written Review: I am not really into legal thrillers and haven't particularly liked John Grisham type novels in the past but when Peter de Jonge teamed up with crime's number one author James Patterson they created a masterpiece. The Beach house is about a guy who returns home to find his girlfriend and family in tears awaiting him. His brother has been murdered and even though it is obvious foul play has occurred the police insist it was suicide. Of course this must be proved wrong but powerful forces don't want the truth uncovered and they don't care who else gets killed. A sensational unusual court scene climaxes this gripping book. This novel is brilliant. From beginning to end you won't want to stop reading. You'll forget about work, throw away that remote control and keep reading this until the final page. It has the usual Patterson short chapter style to make this easy and a pleasure.
Rating: Summary: For Patterson fans only Review: Some close friends of mine gave me very stong reviews of this book and encouraged me to read it. I finally got around to borrowing a copy from the library, and I was excited to get started. By the time I finished, though, I felt very disappointed in what I had expected to be a great book... at best, I'd say this book is AVERAGE. The plot was somewhat unbelievable and overly dramatic; reading it felt like a low-budget tv soap. The characters not very interesting, and the ending was downright stupid. I would go into more detail, but spoilers would negate any remote reason to spend time reading this book. For the Patterson fan--sure. But if you're just trying to kill time (i.e. reading for general entertainment purposes) I'd say pass this one up for something more engaging.
Rating: Summary: I got a prize for finishing this book Review: I got the pleasure of kicking it around the room while yelling, (...) The characters are cartoons, the plot trite and contrived, the shocking wind-up so lame that General Hospital actually lifted the "best" parts of the final chapters. The sex reads like a gross-out jokes book, and the violence is not even interesting enough to be considered gratuitous. The only explanation I have for this miserable work is that somebody had a contractual obligation to fulfill and was feeling a little passive-aggressive. Skip reading it. Go straight to the kicking it around the room part.
Rating: Summary: The Title was the only good thing about this book! Review: As many have warned don't waste your money or your time on this book - it was my first Patterson Book and frankly I am scared to try any others!! I am a big time lover of the town of Montauk where part of the story takes place and he almost ruined that for me also (If I see Patterson on the street I will have to turn the other way - I really don't think he could have written one word of this book (Maybe he just came up with the title???)
Rating: Summary: The Beach House Review: This book is very good. It takes place at a town called East Hampton. The man telling the story is trying to find out if his brother was murdered or if he comited suacide.
