Rating: Summary: From the Leonard Reviews: Can't escape the cliches Review: "Out of Sight" starts so strongly--with the escape of legendary con Jack Foley from prison and his whimsical "kidnapping" of federal marshal Karen Cisco--that it's a shame that it runs out of steam so quickly. While Foley is a charming old-world criminal, and Cisco one of Leonard's strongest female characters--a complex mix of Rambo and Daddy's girl--that it's a shame how Leonard manufactures a series of threadbare plot devices to bring them together: stakeouts and near-misses; minor characters who fill up pages but amount to nothing; lots of south Florida "atmosphere." It's almost a textbook example of the Master running on autopilot--or on auto-Hollywood. Yes, it's worth reading, as almost all decent Leonard books are, but certainly not worth owning.
Rating: Summary: Waste of time Review: After reading so many positibve things about Leonard, I was expecting a great crime novel. I was very disappointed. I found the plot cheesy and unbelievable. The story lacked suspense, and there was nothing special about Leonard's writing. I would suggest readrs looking for interesting crimne fiction to check out Elroy instead.
Rating: Summary: A SHOT TO THE GUT. Review: An absolute winner. Leonard is the master.

Rating: Summary: Out of sight is NOT out of mind and is a great read!! Review: Elmore Leonard is back in form with another novel filled with oddball characters and a Florida flavor. This is the book to take to the beach or the airport. Its got to be another movie with Travolta no less
Rating: Summary: Merely Excellent, Or Typical Leonard Review: Hollywood loves the cute-meet,---but in the trunk of a car? Yet that's where Karen Sisco and Jack Foley, two of Elmore Leonard's most interesting characters, begin a most interesting relationship.
Karen is a federal marshall in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jack is cooly riding the coattails of hardened criminals in a prison break. The story is made-to-order Leonard: fast paced, the plot revealed largely through tightly written dialogue, off-beat characters.
Maybe the story comes off a little too pat in the way the characters keep conveniently running into each other at strategic points, but hey---who cares in a good story? Somehow Leonard makes it believable. Furthermore, he makes it difficult for the reader to choose sides. Do we cheer for Karen, the law enforcement officer? Or for Jack, the convicted bank robber, escaped prisoner, and possible murderer (but really a nice guy)? Love is love, but business is business. Karen's business is to put Jack back in prison. Jack's business is to keep her from doing just that.
We are treated to some intriguing relationships in Out of Sight. There is the steadfast loyalty and trust between Jack and Buddy, the engaging attraction/aversion of Karen and Jack, and the warmly refreshing love/respect between Karen and her father. "My little girl," her dad says fondly, "one tough babe."
A good read, and will make a good movie. Cast it yourself: Meg Ryan? Tom Sellick or Sam Elliott? Gene hackman as the father?

Rating: Summary: Sexy and Smart Review: I admit it. I saw the movie first. It was Jennifer's fault. I enjoyed the book almost as well. Fast paced and funny, but most of all it was smart and sexy. I like dialogue that moves the story along. Out of Sight moves along quickly with catchy, smart dialogue and a sequence of events that keeps the suspense building. It all worked. And, of course, Jennifer was out of sight!
Rating: Summary: A good read that is still true to the Elmore style. Review: I am an Elmore Leonard fan. I love is books.I read this book in a week or so. The characters are great and the dialogue is crisp and clear. The main focus of the book is jack/karen's love interest's in eachother. Elomore weaves this with the florida punch and the detroit cold as backrounds. The story maybe a little bit lacking sometimes it makes up for it with wit and charm. The sub characters are great like snoopy, her dad, buddy, glenn. I also did not like how the story turned out but other then that Elmore has made a great novel. It's also being made into a movie starring george clooney as jack and Jenifer lopez as Karen!!!!
Rating: Summary: A good suspense book for a long plane ride! Review: I am NOT a reader of bestsellers, thrillers or suspense books normally. I picked this one up on the recommendation of a friend, for a long plane ride. Well, this book sure beats the inflight movie! In fact, I haven't seen the film made from it, but the book does read just like a film. The plot is fairly simple; a jail break, and a fatal attraction between a cop and a suave criminal. This book is particularly fun to read in light of the recent jailbreak in Tennessee, where the criminals ended up on the lam for weeks. These criminals are cut of a different cloth and the anti-hero is totally fictional; too intelligent and gentle to be real. But the characters are excellently drawn, the pace swift, and the book is diverting enough to keep you happy on any cramped flight. One of Elmore Leonard's better books, in my opinion and very enjoyable.
