Summary: What a shame...
Review: ...that Cobb had to write this [book] and ruin a great character.

Amanda Garrett may as well retire now. This book could only have been written by someone that has never worn his country's uniform.

Don't buy this book. Don't borrow it from a friend or from the library.

Summary: Amanda Garrett Amazing Beyond Words!!
Review: Amanda proves women have invaluable input in the military of TODAY! Strong is a word that doesn't seem to be enough to describe Amanda's diversity of abilities and still remain a woman with needs & desires. Couldn't put it down! This is an golden example of a technothriller that both men & women will enjoy. James H. Cobb has been added to my favorite authors' list; level w/Tom Clancy. Details, details, amazing and exciting. Crab's Claw was so clever! This was my 1st in the Amanda Garrett's series. Have already ordered the others. Thank you James H Cobb, keep up the fantastic writing!

Summary: Not his best, BUT-------
Review: Better than nothing, which is all we have had for the last few years. I know the guy writes slow, but I do wish he would get on the stick. I love all of his books, and even though I wasn't quite as enamored of this one, I still want Amanda to continue and to have learned from her mistake and get into more action and thoughtful ideas that make her even better. I agree that I also want some of my favorite characters to reemerge, but not necessarily Arkady. I enjoy Amanda and want her to continue developing. If not Amanda, someone else can be introduced, but get with it. I just like Cobb's books. I reread WEST ON 66 often and enjoy it, too.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I am a tremendous fan of Cobb's earlier books in this series and was very excited at the prospect of another outing for these characters. However, I found this book to be an enormous disappointment. The relationship Amanda developed with her nemesis seemed dramatically out of character and frankly detracted from the story. I also like an earlier reviewer missed the Arkady character and the strong interaction of Garrett with her crew from earlier outings. I am not sure what direction Cobb is hoping to take the franchise in but this particular outing came across as flat.

Summary: Amanda still rules!
Review: I just finished reading "Target Lock" by James H. Cobb and I am ready to read it again. This is his fourth book on the Amanda Lee Garrett series of the near future Navy and he gets better with each one. Amanda does for wet navies what Honor Harrington does for space navies.

However, what make me write this impromptu review here [store]is the fact that for the last weeks, we had been discussions new technology weaponry. In an eery coincidence, most of the weapons discussed, are showcase in this book. He also included enough new technology and out of the box application of old technology and concepts to give wet dreams to any self respecting Technonerd. That included non lethal weapons employed in a USS Cole type incident with a different and highly satisfactory outcome.

Cobb just make you hope that his fans include people in Navy R&D and acquisition. Because, some of the concepts and weapons are sound enough to move from a book concept to employment. I am going to check closely the reviews and comments in the Naval Institute's Proceedings with crossed fingers.

He also set his book in Indonesia, another area of barflies's discussion and interest. Female barflies and sensitive male ones will also enjoy the romance angle in the south seas.

So, if you are waiting anxiously for David Weber's next Honor Harrington, this will help you with the hunger pains. I can not wait for the next one.

Summary: Romance with the wrong pirate
Review: In Target Lock, Amanda gets involved romantically with a modern day pirate, whom she helps capture (eventually). The suspense comes from not being sure which way she'll jump when the decision has to be made. This book is an interesting continuation of her story, but I'm still wondering WHEN she's going to notice that the Admiral is interested in her (I see echoes of Honor Harrington here).
