Rating: Summary: Nothing to fear... Review: Lis Jewell has nothing to fear from the title of this fabulous read. I have not read any of her other books, but I just ordered them all. Her writing style, her ability to convey detail - but keep you laughing, interested -truly entertained. Watching Ana Wills blossom as a character, and discover Bee Bearhorn was one of the best reads I've had in a while. I will be passing this jewel onto everyone I know.
Rating: Summary: One Hit Wonder is definitely a wonder. Review: Lisa Jewell has done it again. After her success with Ralph's Party and Thirtysomething, she manages to deliver yet another literary art. With her latest book, One Hit Wonder, Jewell has already proved herself just the opposite of what this title claims. You find yourself stuck inside the thoughts of a tall, lanky woman, Anabella, who has never really been able to live for herself. With the help of her overbearing mother and her already insecure self-esteem, she has never managed to become her own person. While constantly in the shadow of her successful celebrity sister who left home at age fifteen, Ana still has yet to leave home at the age of twenty-six. Bee is everything Ana wishes she could be and beyond. With a successful popstar reputation, a hefty amount of money on the table and her very own loft in London, she seems almost untouchable, immortal to her younger sister. What Ana wouldnt give to have Bee's life for just one day.. or perhaps forever. When Bee suddenly commits suicide, Ana finds herself hurrying to London to retrieve the last precious possesions of a foreign older sister. Little did she know that this innocent lapse of her lifestyle would turn into a permanent way of life and she would never be the same again. With the help of Bee's old friends, lovers and money, Ana discovers her extreme ability to live, laugh and love for herself for the first time in her life. Jewell keeps you on your toes with each mind-blowing secret that Ana uncovers on the search to find out who her beloved older sister really was- and on the search to find herself.
Rating: Summary: One-Hit Wonder is a hit! Review: Lisa Jewell is one of the best British chick lit writers out there. I thought her previous books, Ralph's Party and Thirtynothing, were great, but she's outdone herself with One-Hit Wonder! Ana Wills has always romanticized the life of her half-sister, Bee Bearhorn, a pop star who had a #1 hit record in the eighties. But then Bee appears dead in her London apartment. Now Ana must find the cause of her sister's mysterious death. This is chick lit mixed with a bit of mystery, which makes this novel even more enjoyable to read. One-Hit Wonder should be on every chick lit fans' list of summer must-reads! I urge to read it.
Rating: Summary: One Of The Best - A Real Winner Review: Lisa Jewell is one of the best. Her books are always really well done, and always really popular. She hasn't written anything that isn't a hit. "One-Hit Wonder" is no different. I found this latest endeavor really complex and highly interesting. It's got a bit of mystery that runs through a true "coming of age" book. It's more than you basic "chick lit" and really pulls it's readers in. It's full of amazing characters -- wonderful story - and exceptional talent. Ms. Jewell is truly talented and a real asset to the literature world. She's a bright star! Cheers!
Rating: Summary: Knocks It Out of the Park with this Novel! Review: Much as I loved Lisa Jewell's "Ralph's Party," this, her 3rd novel, is infinitely better. I can even put my finger on what makes this novel so special. It is the way Jewell captures the essence of unfinished issues between sisters. Ana's sister Bee dies, a suicide no less, years after Ana last saw her. Bee was a huge pop star at one point but could never move beyond her "one hit wonder." As Ana starts looking into Bee's life, she discovers that much more may have behind Bee's subsequent decline in life other than the failure to record a 2nd hit song. She even discovers an adolescent boy who she initially suspects may have been Bee's son. However, Jewell takes no such easy resolution. Thankfully, she spares us a secret baby plotline. Ana meets a wonderful cast of supporting characters in her quest, people who intersected with her late sister's life. She also must resolve living within the confines of her agoraphobic mother's home and too much under her mother's influence. Moving into Bee's London apartment is her first big step to break that unwholesome situation. Jewell is perhaps the brightest light among all the UK women writers who have distinguished themselves in the last few years in the fiction which has come to the USA.
Rating: Summary: The best of Lisa Jewell's first three books Review: Of Lisa's books the first I picked up was Ralph's Party. She developed the characters in that book really well and I was quite engaged in the story. Before I even finished that book I ran out (well ran to my computer) and purchased Thirtynothing and One-Hit Wonder. I was a bit let down by Thirtynothing. It's a fun and fine read but hit the mark a bit for me. Where the other two fell slightly short, I felt One-Hit Wonder shined. The characters are very engaging (although I do agree with the reviewed who felt Flint's character could have been revealed more) and the story unfolds very well, with originality and mystery. I was captivated and never bored or guessing exactly where it would lead. A very enjoyable and memorable read! I see she has a new book now and will buy it immediately when it comes out in paperback in a few weeks.
Rating: Summary: very sweet Review: Okay, though not perfect, this is definitely my favorite of Lisa Jewell's books. It's amazing that Lisa pays such close attention to realistic detail (e.g. hair smells like it needs shampooing, half-centimeter of stubble in her armpit, etc.) but I found that in Lisa's first two books that attention to detail bordered on disturbing (a lot of reference to bowel movements, which, let's be honest, is not so sweet and romantic). Don't get me wrong, I think Jewell is a fantastic author. Her writing is very real and fluid, and most of all (this is something I find a lot of other authors can't do)--her stories are interesting, beautifully written, and original. Each one changes you in a different way. 'One-hit Wonder' is like that--it's funny yet sad, it's got an underlying romance going on (what British novels about 35-35 single women nowadays don't) but it's also about sisters and agoraphobic mothers and gay fathers and best friends and the city of London. And honestly, who doesn't find Jewell's belief in 'fated love' endearing?
Rating: Summary: You won¿t regret reading this! Review: One Hit Wonder is a wonderful story. The book starts off slow - and I was tempted to put it down. But, something kept me reading. In the end I was very happy I stuck with it. The story revolves around a famous one hit wonder named Bee and her younger sister Ana. Ana and Bee haven't spoken in years - but when Bee dies, Ana is forced to travel to London and clean up Bee's possessions. While in London Ana figures more out about Bee than she ever really wanted to know - and she learns who she really is. This book has more twists in it than a Red Vine. It will keep you intrigued, guessing, crying and loving the characters.
Rating: Summary: enlightening Review: ONE HIT WONDER was an enjoyable book with a very important message - love your friends and family today for you know not when they are going to leave you! Ana grew up never really knowing her older sister, Bee, as anything other than a pop star. When Bee dies, Ana decides to uncover what could have possibly happened to her sister, the one who "had it all". It was sad to watch Ana learn so much about her sister through the eyes of her sister's friends. This book should make any reader recognize the importance of family and friendship and treasuring both right NOW! If after reading it you don't feel the need to mend some fences within your own life, then you just didn't get it. Great work by the author and I look forward to reading her other books.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT READ!! One of my favs for 2003 already! Review: ONE HIT WONDER was more than I ever thought it would be. It was a pageturner, a mystery and a book that touched me enough to cry toward the end of the book. Ana and Belinda (Bee) are half sisters. Belinda leaves when Ana is quite young and follows a pop star career. She has one hit, thus the title and her life becomes quite a mystery which Ana unfolds. Ana goes to London to clear up Bee's apartment as Bee was found dead due to an overdose. Ana stays on and meets some of Bee's few friends and thus unravels the mystery of her sister's life. Enthralling read - more intense than I could have imagined. I my read Jewell read and not my last.
