Rating: Summary: Behind-the-Scenes Reality Review: Even for those who grew up watching the Vietnam War played out daily on television, this story of Navy SEALs in action provides a zoom-lens camera eye on jungle warfare. While fascinating details reveal how individual men transform into a single, deadly unit with seemingly superhuman powers, this book also takes the reader into the heart of one man who is all too human. The authors of Men in Green Faces walk an unusual path as they neither villify nor glorify war, but simply and effectively tell it like it was. And "like it was" is nothing like you imagined unless you were there. For those who only saw the media's version of the fighting in Vietnam, this novel drops you into the jungle and stands you in the middle of an elite and heroic unit called SEALs. It's an experience you won't soon forget.
Rating: Summary: The War In Men Review: From its hauntingly beautiful opening scene forward, MEN IN GREEN FACES mesmerizes. The story of Navy SEALs operating in the Mekong Delta during the war in Vietnam, I had expected this book to be just another formulaic genre account of soldiers in action. GREEN FACES proves to be far superior, both in solid, substantive storytelling and just plain gut-splitting emotion. No doubt based in part on the real-life experiences of one of its authors, a highly-decorated former Navy SEAL, GREEN FACES features a layered cast of vibrant heroes unflaggingly determined to ply their trade--in all its lethal fury--while somehow retaining some semblance of humanity. Given the brutal, often mind-numbing conditions in which they operate, doing so proves a challenge that is never far beneath the surface. Page after page, along with each of these thoughtful young men I, too, ached and sweated and prayed for them; that they might somehow emerge unscathed from the dank heart of darkness that is jungle warfare, with all its deadly denizens--both human and not. More than a story of men in war, MEN IN GREEN FACES is a bracing, very human story of the war in men.
Rating: Summary: For Navy SEAL fans this is a must read! Review: Gene makes you feel the jungles and the entire experience of jungle warfare as only the men in green faces could experience. I spent some time talking to Gene one afternoon and I'm waiting for his next book. Don't miss this action drama based on true stories set in fiction. The personalities and activities match the people I watched as I grew up in Coronado observing the SEAL's in training as a child in the mid-60's. Thanks Gene, I loved it!
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I bought Men in Green Faces in order to be... 1. Entertained....and the book certainly does that... 2. To learn about Vietnam and the Navy Seals... I have no idea what parts of the book are real or unreal...Only Gene Wentz and the men he served with know the real truth of his book.... It is a great book compared to another Seal book that I have read. ... If Gene writes another book...I will read it. What he does or does not do in his personal life is none of my business.

Rating: Summary: Gene Wentz- A Real Seal Review: My first statement is that this book is one of the best War novels ever written. I would gladly read another novel by Mr. Wentz. I would also like to say that Gene Wentz was a real navy SEAL (believe it or not)! His book is a great one. I could smell, taste, and invision every single moment of this book. It is the most dicriptive book yet it isn't boring so it keeps your attention the whole time. If you even only kinda like war novels Buy This One! Note: Stephin King actually asked Mr. Wentz to make this book into a film but Gene turned it down because Mr. King wanted it to be Rambo style and Gene wanted to respect the men he fought besides! What a crazy guy!
Rating: Summary: This book helps the reader to "be there." Review: Only those who experience the life style of elite fighting men and women truly know what happens in the hell holes of war. This book, written by a Navy SEAL, shows the darkest battles that are not fought in the newspapers, television, or other communication media. War is not "pretty," it is filled with subterfuge in order to win. Many people are offended by what must be done to protect freedom, but they are generally the ones who have never been on the front lines. This scenario is real. If you want to know even a little of what really happens in war, then this is a good example. If you want the political gloss, watch TV. I give it five stars. I've been there.
Rating: Summary: No Hero To Me Review: The book had interesting content. When I met Gene(Vernon E.Coleman) in Washington, D.C. I received his book, personnally. It is too bad that this man does not have the same courage he portrays in his book. His decorations are just that. decorations. He may have been a real Seal, but there is no Honor in lying and manipulating innocent people. That is what Gene Wentz does best. Enjoy the book for it's thirst for the hero, but remember, Heros are people you look up to and respect. Gene Wentz is no hero to me. He lies and uses religon to excuse the behaviors he displays, his book is testomonial to his beliefs in lying and religon. I realize most readers have an interest in the Navy Seals. I did not have any knowledge of Seals until Gene introduced me to his "Playground". I found it intrieging but I soon learned to fear this man and his behavior.
Rating: Summary: A Woman's Opinion Review: Wanted to add a female perspective on this well-written, fascinating book about Navy SEALs in Vietnam. Even if you don't usually read in the military genre, this story has something for everyone. The accurate details and realistic characters give this novel something many others lack ... a clear portrait of what these courageous men did (and still do) for their country and those of us who take our freedom and safety for granted. We owe a tremendous debt to those who serve, and gratitude to Gene Wentz and Betty Abell Jurus for giving us a valuable glimpse from behind the scenes. The Hollywood versions simply don't cut it. If you want a dose of reality, read this book!
