Rating: Summary: A So-So Read Review: "It's My F---ing Birthday" is a light read and is a pretty decent book. There were some funny moments, and I was so happy to read that she has a "dumb girl" too.I do, however, have a few complaints about this book: the main one is her parents! Both of her parents are way too neurotic and made me so mad! Maybe I'm the weird one because i have a good relationship with my parents. I can't believe her mom and dad would act like that to their daughter (especially on her birthday) and that she would just sit and take it. The other complaint is that i don't really think she learned her lesson at the end. She says that she has finally figured things out, but that is what she says every year! I thought that the concept of the book was very original, and if you can get past her crazy parents, it's not too bad of a read.
Rating: Summary: F - - - - - - Funny! Review: From the start, I was drawn into this book. It was like someone had stepped inside my head and was writing a story of my life. From the inner dumb girl who over analyzed every little detail of a date, to the parents that couldn't be taken in public without something embarrassing happening. This book is a must read. The only thing that was disapointing to me, was that it did not end as strongly as it began. Worth the $$ anyway.
Rating: Summary: Mildly amusing Review: I know Markoe has great credentials, but having already seen "Sex and the City" through all 6 seaons, and "Bridget Jones' Diary," there's not much new here. I haven't finished it yet, about half way through. The opening chapter describing her horrific parents is pretty fun, but I just can't quite get a feel for main character or the people in her life. But it's a mildly entertaining read, especially for any woman who's had to endure being single in her 30's.
Rating: Summary: to sad to read... Review: I wanted to kill myself after reading this....NOT FUNNY!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Not as funny as you would think Review: I'm sorry, but in your FORTIES, who is actually going to allow themselves to be humiliated every year on their day of birth by their parents? Grow up already! It is our job as *happy* adults to specifically avoid people with chronic negative energy that tear us down and surround ourselves with those that inspire us, teach us and allow us to grow as individuals. This book is only mildy amusing, mostly just a sad commentary on this particular woman. The funniest bit to me was why she kept getting the d*** flowers!
Rating: Summary: Lighthearted and humorous Review: In this book Markoe's character (whose name is never revealed) decides that in order to take control of her life and try to make it better she will keep a "diary" of sorts that she only makes entries in, on her birthday. Each year she will chronicle the events of past year, and hope to learn something. Every woman can relate to the character's experiences with dating, and the at times futile attempts to please her parents! Overall the book is funny, dialoge between the main character and her parents is hilarious. Her experiences dating are funny as well. I did think content explored in each chapter became repititious at times and thought at times the main character became a little too insightful and serious, which was very different than the rest of the tone in the book. Overall it was a funny, quick read. A nice break from some of the more "serious" books out there!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious and real! Review: Merrill Markoe's It's My F---ing Birthday is one of the most hilarious novels I've read all year. The heroine chronicles her birthdays in a laugh-out-loud manner as she puts up with her eccentric parents, useless dates and bad advice from her friends. Also, as though her life couldn't get worse, her ex-boyfriend sends her ambiguous floral arrangements on every birthday. Is he still in love with her, or is it simply a nice gesture on his part? As the narrator reaches forty, she wonders if she'll ever find love. The situations and emotions she goes through ring true. I was able to empathize with her plights. I love Markoe's sharp wit and precise comic timing in this wonderful and memorable debut. I hadn't expected much from this book at first, but it has turned out to be one of the best reading investments I've made all year. I urge Ms. Markoe to write another witty novel.
Rating: Summary: Mildly amusing Review: The title is funny. The premise is funny. The book itself is not funny. I only laughed at her comment about Hillary Clinton at the end of the book. In the beginning of the book the issues with her parents were moderately interesting, but were just repeated with no originality added throughout the book. In the dearth of chick books that have been published since the success of Bridget Jones' Diary, the only thing that stands out about this one is the title.
Rating: Summary: A novel even for the person who dislikes novels Review: This hilarious novel by Merril Markoe is not for you if you do not appreciate sarcastic, slightly bitter, and cynical humour. If you are the type of person to find comedy in tragedy, and in irritating ordinary life- this one is calling your name. Markoe successfully grabs her readers to laugh with her, at her, and at life in general. The book is about a woman in her thirties who records how her year has been overall, on her birthday. As the years (or chapters) progress with this book, we learn to see the pattern of her life which we notice in ourselves-- without making us feel depressed. It is the type book which can make you feel good about yourself, without having to leave your own private hell. It is obvious in this book that this is perhaps a mix of fiction and Markoe's own life-- and we get to live it with her as she carries on with her neurotic mother, irritating father, disappointing sex life, confusing messages she receives from an ex and the political events that carry on only as the sidelines of her personal life, which she mocks just so well. This book is going to be the best you will read all year. It is only disappointing if sarcasm is not your taste. It's the type of book you should read in bed, snuggled up with your kitten and some cocoa.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, Entertaining AND Funny! Review: This is the funniest, most entertaining book I have read in a long time. The novel is a dairy of sorts, an entry written each year on the birthday of our heroine. Her life is surrounded by her dysfunctional parents, the death of her mother, boyfriend after boyfriend (all Mr. Wrong), and the gift of flowers on her birthday by an ex-boyfriend for no apparant reason. The book is highly entertaining, I found my self chuckling and laughing out loud at Ms. Markoe's humor. You can find yourself, a friend, or even your parents in the book. I almost finished the book in one read. That should tell you all you need to know about the book. Well worth the money, terribly funny and entertaining! I loved it!
