Rating: Summary: What a great book Review: After hearing about this book, I went online to read the customer reviews, The reviews were very discouraging. but being a very stubborn person, who does not listen to other people's opinions, i decided to see what the hype was all about, Yes at times I had a hard time understanding the concept and there were times I just wanted to pick up a pen and make corrections. Overall I would say the story line was very thrilling and I was on the edge of my seat the whole damn time. I would say it was a great book.
Rating: Summary: Thug Lovin' on the DL Review: Asante Kahari's HOMO THUG, takes the reader into the life of Michael Fraser, a convicted felon who is about to serve his first adult sentence in prison. Michael learned crime before he learned the facts of life and enters prison as a sexually frustrated virgin. Throughout his time in juvenile detention centers, Fraser saw mild homosexual acts, which intrigued him as much as they disgusted him. When he goes to prison he is in a whole new world where anything goes.
Michael quickly assimilates into the prison community and moves up the ranks to become one of the most powerful inmates. He has money, power, and respect, but lacks love. Michael seeks love and finds it in the form of Derrick "Dee Dee" Jenkins a fellow inmate who has taken so many feminine hormones that he actually resembles a woman. His first encounters with Dee Dee are considered mild to some, but soon an all out love affair blossoms. Circumstances terminate their relationship and later both are released from prison.
After his release, Michael is finally able to consummate with members of the opposite sex. Although he thoroughly enjoys sex with women, he still yearns for feelings that he experienced with men. Ultimately, Michael will have to do a great deal of soul-searching to find out who or what it is that he desires, and risks having his secret longings for men destroy everything he has.
HOMO THUG is a drama filled, quick read that drew me in from the very beginning. The story unfolded well and the characters were intriguing. The book served as an eye-opener to some of the experiences that occur in prisons and the circumstances under which many thugs partake in "down low" homosexual lifestyle. Despite the book's allure, I found myself struggling through it because there were so many distracting grammatical and typographical errors. However, Asante Kahari is to be commended for penning such an eye-opening, entertaining read.
Rating: Summary: BLOWS MORE THAN YOUR MIND Review: Good story but has awful editing, proofing and really contradicting statements.
The back cover advertises it's a true story yet the inside claims its all fiction. Having experienced a few 'thugs' in my life, I am inclined to believe it's 50/50.
I found the author's blaming an honest and out "faggot" for the 'serious issue' facing the closet-queen character rather BLATANTLY homophobic and a public display of ignorance. Given the fact that the main character engages in unprotected sex with umpteen individuals (of both sexes) afterwards, anyone could have been the cause. Moreover, when the edjumificated, "college-degree-holding" closet-queen eventually learns of the faggot's demise, he is relieved to know it was merely due to pneumonia and not the "Big One". (Wow!)
NO Pulitzer for this one, I'm afraid. As a B-grade homoerotic novel, it makes handy reading in the John.
Rating: Summary: Get ready for a ride Review: I agree with a lot of readers about the poor grammer and mispelling, but get over that and get to the point of the book. The writing of Homo Thug was not what I expected, it reminded me of a Catcher in th Rye style, very descriptive of everything and of the main character's thoughts. The book starts off a little slow but but once you hit that main chapter (those who read the book know what I'm talking about) the book takes off from there. It was a good book and those homo sex scenes were very grahic. The writing will blow your socks off.
Rating: Summary: my thoughts about homo thug Review: I do think that the book was very detail about the inside. On the other hand i have to agree with some of the other reviews about, the misspelled words and how the book went. The book was in some parts not understanding and he went from telling one thing to talking about something else, and the end of the book didn't make much sense either.
Rating: Summary: LADIES PLEASE PICK THIS UP !!!!!!! Review: I HAVE TO SAY, " WOW " THIS BOOK WAS THE BOMB,FROM THE BEGINING TO THE END ,THIS BOOK WILL SHOW U LADIES ,THE BIGGEST FINEST THUG
COULD BE A "HOMO THUG", IT'S KINDA SCARY ? AND MAKE'S U THINK, BUT THAT'S LIFE ... AND LADIES PUT TWO& TWO TOGETHER ....HE SLEEP'S WIT SOME RAPPER'S GUESS WHO ?
Rating: Summary: Great First Novel Review: I read this book in about 4 days because I tried to pace myself, but on the fourth day I was waiting for the meat of what the story was going to be about and read the last 100 or so pages. Bottom line, I was satisfied with the story, wish it was longer, and I want to see a sequal to see what happes if/when he moves to Baltimore. Strong message at the end, and the flaw is that Asante only brush the tradgedy, but then again dealing with the main character, that may have really been his reaction. The book is worth the price. Go out and get it.
Rating: Summary: It wasn't that bad...but it does need editing! Review: I understand the frustration at the lack of editing, but in all fairness the brother put it down. A lot of truth was in this book. The writer wrote in a voice that was conversational, so it put you at ease listening to him speak. Still, the story really does need editing. The publisher put this out there raw dog style. It was confusing to read with the way paragraphs went on for pages and pages. Not to mention the misspelled words.
Rating: Summary: I agree! Review: I was led to the publisher's web-site by an associate. I saw this book being advertised and I thought the concept was intriguing. I saw a street vendor selling it I asked and he recommended it. I read it. I repeat: I read it. First and foremost I would like to say to the author, get a lawyer and sue the publisher. The web-site lists Denise Campbell as the Executive Editor. If this is the same Denise Campbell that also writes for the same publisher we're talking serious conflict of interest here! Not even Triple Crown is this bad when it comes to editing! I was considering sending a manuscript in to the the publisher to be reviewed, but this just killed that idea!
Rating: Summary: Is it just me... Review: Is it just me or did this book not make any sense at all? Okay, I understand homeboy went to jail and got turned out on the down-low, but what was up with the secret society stuff? And did anyone catch the end of the book? The writer needs to rework a lot of scenes. Some stuff just didn't fit together right. It was really hard to follow. The writing was just so juvenile! Didn't anyone read this before it went to print? I ain't hatin, but man--c'mon!
