Summary: A bit of fiction and nonfiction
Review: After reading "John Adams" I became interested in the Thomas Jefferson - Sally Hemings story. I could not put this book down. It is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read and I'm a voracious reader. I'm eager to read the sequel, "The President's Daughter."

Summary: MAGNIFICENT!!
Review: After watching the miniseries, I was determined to find out as much as I could about Sally and 'Tom'. I did not have to search for long because this book quenched my thirst. Barbara equisitely researched this novel, which makes the story line flow like a motion picture. The sensitive yet controversial topic took me on an emotional rollercoster. Pick this one up.

Summary: great historical fiction...
Review: Barbara Chase-Riboud did an amazing job with creating fiction using true historical documentation. It was a compelling and informational read. One of my friends recommended it, and I am glad she did. If you want to read about Sally Hemings and get as close to an accurate information, this is probably as close as you can get. The quotes from Jefferson's writings and other documents connect this story like nothing else I have read. Definitely a must for history buffs.

Summary: A wonderful read
Review: I always vaguely admired Thomas Jefferson and knew that he was an interesting sort of man and quite the genius. However, I was completely surprised and interested to read about his relationship with Sally Hemings. I couldn't put this book down and I resolved to read more about Sally Hemings. How sickening and dreadful we "humans" have treated each other and still treat each other! How could Jefferson had slaves? (How could anyone?)

I think that this sort of book should be required reading in high schools and colleges instead of some of the deadly boring books assigned in Lit classes. Most people don't think about and don't know how people of color and how women have been so ignored, disrespected and hidden in American history.

SALLY HEMINGS is a novel, but this story tells the sad truth of slaves and women. I'd recommend it for men and women... It's a good read and it's thought-provoking... There are women in parts of the world in similar circumstance right now and we are oblivious to their situations. Hopefully, their stories won't stay buried as the story of SALLY HEMINGS has been.

Good book. I really recommend it.

Summary: Well-drawn, well-depicted
Review: The story of Sally Hemings, slave mistress to Thomas Jefferson, could easily become a sensationalistic botch for a novelist with unskilled hands.
Chase-Riboud writes with such delicacy of feeling, with a fine flair for historical setting, that makes for a strong story. If you want to get a sense of Sally Hemmings, her life, and her surroundings, you might want to skip a history book and start with this excellent novel.

Summary: The begining of the Sally renaissance
Review: This is the book that started me on my hobby of collecting Sally Hemmings books. When Barbara Chase Riboud wrote this novel critics --mostly Jefferson fans sneered. They were so determined to wipe out the idea that Jefferson and Sally may have had an affair that they forgot that this is a great book. Sally Hemmings and Thomsa Jefferson come alive in this novel. This historical fiction/love story does a finer job of showing the tragedy of slavery than many history books.

Review: This is the most incredible book i have ever read in my life. Barbra's ability to weave such an amamzing story around the life of Sally Hemmings, brings a complete picture of her family and times. I could not put this book down! I have since read its follow up, The President's Daughter which is the story of the children she had with Thomas Jefferson. That book is also 5 stars. DNA Test proved in 1998 that Sally's decendents are from her union with Thomas Jefferson. Why is America so affraid of parenting between masters and thier slaves? She had his children is for sure, the events of her life is what Barbra researched and brought together for us as a stunning 10 of a book!

Summary: More knowledge is the key. This book gave me more knowledge
Review: This was a wonderful book! The story was very clear and exact. The thought of a US President being in love with a woman of a different race scares and frightens some people, but to me it proves that we(African-Americans) are here to stay and we have a part in this country's history. Maybe not a happy one, but still, a place indeed. Thomas Jefferson, I believe was a selfish man in some sense that he used Sally Hemings to some extent. I do believe that he loved her in some odd way, and I do not doubt that she loved him. Maybe one day, the world will be able to accept the fact that a white man can love a black woman. I also pray that his descendants will learn to accept their African-American family.
