Rating: Summary: Great Enjoyment Review: Don't get me wrong, I read this entire book in a few days -- taking time out for work of course. I must admit, as a graduate of an HBCU, I saw many of my friends in some of this. But, while this novel was truly entertaining, I never really felt like the characters were well developed, or that they had really come to terms with their problems or how they would deal with them. For example, for years Stephanie has somehow felt unworthy of her social position, a position that she has gained through her parents' association. I can't imagine how pledging a sorority will make a permanent, positive change in her self-esteem as it relates to her social status. Also, just little things irked me, like how loving line sisters could auction off a man that has given one of their own an STD. Just does not compute for me. Maybe because Ms. Butler was concentrating on developing five characters instead of just one or two, some potentially serious discussions were just touched. At any rate, if you are looking for something to read on a wintery or dreary weekend, or something light, pick this up. It's worth the chuckle.
Rating: Summary: WAY TO GO SOROR AND TO ALL THE LADIES IN PINK! Review: First, thanks to Amazon. Com for recommending this book as wellas many of the other books by first time african american authors thatI've met as a result of purchasing books via Amazon.com. TJ has done a fine job at her first attempt as an author and I can't wait to read additional books from her. Her characters are well developed and the storyline is interesting in Sorority Girls. Sorority Girls was a page turner and I read the book in one day! No matter whether you're Greek or Non-Greek, any sister can relate to this book as it deals with friendship and female-bonding. Highly recommend to anyone and I don't think you will be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: It Kept Me Very Interested Review: I absolutely loved this book. It is definitely a page turner. It kept me wanting more and more with every page that I read. I just recently finished reading this novel, and I "L O V E D" it. Tajuana Butler is a wonderful, and talented writer. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: I am a fan of T.J. Butler. I enjoyed reading Sorority Sisters. It was a good depiction of pledging and college life. I like the fact that the characters were round not flat. They had their own issues, and I was able to connect with the girls on many levels. I read the book in 2 days. I would also recommend her second novel "Hand Me Down Heartache." I read it in 1 day, and actually liked it more than "Sorority Sisters." I recently started "The Night After Thirty." It's been kind of hard to get into but hopefully it will get better.
Rating: Summary: A Good. Quick Read Review: I read this book in one sitting one Sunday afternoon. Having graduated from college and experienced the pledge process, I was eager to explore this book. For the most part, I kept reading hoping something greater would happen to the characters. That something never came. It was a tease where the secret lives of black college women was concerned. I would recommend this book to young high school women to allow them to see the challenges that they could encounter in college and for that reason alone. I expected more...I wanted a closer examination of the characters lives and a more realistic account of the effect that pledging has on the lives of college women, including their friends, families, and significant others. So much more was waiting to be explored.
Rating: Summary: Go Soror! Review: My hearty congratulations to my Soror, TJ Butler, on her tasteful, respectful and responsible portrayal of life in and out of a historically African American sorority. The fictionalized account of the desire to join, and the actual membership into a sorority is beautifully portrayed in this work. If nothing than to dispel the myth that sorority is all about 'who you know' and the color of your skin, Sorority Sisters is a fine accounting of campus life and the pledging experience. Five African American women, from all types of life experiences are united in a common bond of pledging a sorority. Sorority Sisters is an accounting of the lifelong friendships that developed through the pledging experience and the feelings of true sisterhood that blossom. Each lady: Cajen, Chancey, Malena, Stephanie, and Tiara each have their own personal reasons for wanting to be a part of such a prestigious organization. Each has problems, lets face it, who doesn't, but their ability to work through the pledge process and the ability to share their lives with each other brings about a closeness that can't be duplicated. Ms. Butler has done a fine job in writing a book that exposes both feeling and atmosphere. Each character is well developed and as a reader I didn't feel the need to stick to one character and follow her through the journey. The intermingling of characters made the read exciting and fast. Her freshman endeavor in writing is worthy of praise as I feel she's done a fine job of adequately representing a process that is shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding. Without divulging any sorority secrets, she has brought about understanding in a compact novel.
Rating: Summary: Interesting subject...poor outcome... Review: My mother bought me this book when I was in high school. I did not like this book. I gave it two stars b/c it's an easy read, but like some other reviewers, I found myself backpeddling to avoid confusion. I think Ms. Butler could have gone more in depth with the characters and made them come together fullcircle better than she did.
Rating: Summary: An okay book, cute Review: Sorority Sisters by Tajuna TJ Butler is a light read about 5 very different young women who aspire to join a sorority whose colors are pink. I don't recall if the author named the sorority or not in the book. It is a cute book and the five women have to adjust their lives when it comes time to pledge. Some had boy friends, one was caught up with a no good guy. Honestly, I'm a bit lost when it comes to this book because there were so many characters and each character had a distinct and different storyline. This was the authors breakthrough book and she attained much success. According to her official web site, there may be plans for a movie based on the book in the future. This book is okay, but I really would have liked more details about the pledging process, the author doesn't describe anything intense beyond the girls being referred to by numbers and losing sleep. I thought this book was okay, a cute book.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read Review: The book had a good story line - but was a little fuzzy. While I appreciated the description of each of their backgrounds, I don't think the characters were fully developed. I think there were some unrealistic actions, i.e., the early breakup with Anthony - he was way too agreeable, the dealings with Jeff - he was a bum and should have been dumped very early, the STD was taken a bit too lightly - She was so willing to forgive and go on - not believable. Over all - I think it was a good starter -
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: This book is good for noe reason and one reason only. It explained somewhat of what goes on in these sorority's and had more than one main character so you saw or read on how each felt and I thought that was very clever.
