Rating: Summary: random passage Review: a brilliant novel, well crafted and absolutely engaging. If you haven't brrn to Newfoundland yet, go.
Rating: Summary: Great book Worth Every Moment Review: My Mom handed me this book and said I had to read it. She was right! The story of the Andrews family, their journey to Newfoundland and the village they develop is riveting. We see their story through Vinnie's eyes who is a young teenage girl at the novel's inception. The family endures nature's elements, life and many deaths through the telling of her experiences. I particularly enjoyed the switch at the end when we see things from the eyes of a different but VERY important character. I just ordered the sequel and am looking forward to continuing with them on their journey.
Rating: Summary: Recommended by Newfoundlanders Review: On a visit to Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, this book's title always surfaced when I quizzed locals on cultural and historical points. It was about a 12-hour read, and I found it very easy to justify putting distractions aside to read this involving book. I felt that having two separate accounts of events, each through the eyes of two of the book's characters, really added to the depth of the story. No wonder why Newfoundlanders are so proud of the heritage that grew from the struggles on "the rock."

Rating: Summary: An accurate depiction Review: Random Passage is a wonderful read that will give anyone an opportunity to "see" Newfoundland as it began. I recently visited the site a resettled community (since 1964) on Random Island, and I felt like I was visiting the Cape Random of Morgan's book. Her descriptions, the genuineness of her characters, there is so much about the book I enjoyed. I just bought a copy for a friend from NF living away & the woman who took me to Deer Harbour (the resettled community), which was her home. I know they will both enjoy it. I would also recommend "Waiting for Time".

Rating: Summary: Life can be hard but it's nothing compared to CapeRandom. Review: Reading this book you can truely enter the lives of the people on Cape Random ie. fish with the men , prepare the fish with the and salt it with the women. Wrestling their existence from sparce soil and the capricious ocean ,Lavinia and her family struggle side by side with the capable Vincents, the enigmatic storekeeper Thomas Hutchings and the mysterious Mary Bundle. Bernice truely captures our heart with her telling of this story. I hardly left the book out of my hand whilst reading it - I can't help but read it again from time to time. It's one of the best books that I have read in a while !!
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable characters Review: What a wonderful book! I saw the CBC miniseries first and for once that didn't ruin the book. I fell in love with the characters, love the portrayal of Newfoundland. What a harsh life they lived. The writing is super...the characters are beautifully drawn. Loved it!
Rating: Summary: Engrossing Historical Fiction of Newfoundland. Review: What a wonderful, interesting story. The characters came to life. I couldn't put this book down & was living the story of their difficult struggle to surive the harsh winters. As a native Newfoundlander, I feel this story realistically portrays living in the fishing outports in earlier days. The accurate depiction of early Newfoundland settlement will be good to see in the mini series that has been filmed. I hope that we will get to see it in the U.S.A. I can't wait to read the sequel, "Waiting For Time."
Rating: Summary: Newfoundland Mystique Review: What an incredible read! If you obtain a copy of RANDOM PASSAGE, PLEASE pick up the sequel at the same time. You'll be super bummed if you have to wait and read it at a later date. Bernice Morgan has presented us with a stunning example of Newfoundland literature. After spending two summers in the area, I can pick up these works and be taken back to "the Rock" without all the air travel. I heard that this book is being transformed into a movie??? Can anyone verify this? In the meantime, I hope Ms. Morgan is writing!
