Rating: Summary: There's No Such Thing As An Accident... Review: Baylor Warren's elderly aunt is hospitalized with a broken hip and asks her to take care of her home on Ana Lia Island in south Florida. The island and people are very different from what Baylor is used to in Chicago. Soon after arriving on the island, Baylor has an accident of her own when local vet Hobie Lynn Allen runs her over with her truck. At first hostile torward each other, the women find themselves falling in love. Both are scared of their feelings, but are influenced by outside forces (island residents, Hobie's son, and Baylor's friend) to move forward.
I have liked everything I've read by Maas and this is no exception. This book was well-written and thoughtful, with a little suspense thrown in to boot. Additionally, I love finding a lesbian romance that isn't pure template. This story allowed the relationship to develop before they fell into bed, and the sex scenes were more sensual than pornographic. I think it takes real talent to pull that off. To top it off, the story was believable, even with the strange behaviors of the island residents (I grew up in Florida... must be all that sun that drives people cooky!).
Strongly suggested for those who love a good story and would rather leave the porn to someone else. Recommended for a lazy day, perhaps with a bubble bath, accompanied with a carafe of pinot grigio and cheese with crackers.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing, entertaining and humorous Review: I hadn't read anything by this author before, so I was not sure what to expect. I made the mistake of starting to read it at 10:30pm. I couldn't put it down. It's not that it was so exciting, there was just never a good point where I wanted to put it down. The characters were full and complete. The very unique persons populating the town could easily have been made into caricatures, but the weren't. They were treated with care and respect. While it is, in essence, a love story it was also extremely funny at times. There were many times when I found myself chuckling in amusement. In particular there is a scene where Baylor explains being attacked by a bird that had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing so hard. I'm not telling more about that scene, you'll just have to read it to believe it. There are few books I read a second time. This one will be re-read more than once. If you're looking for a steamy, hot & heavy book, this is not it. Although I have to admit Baylor has a tremendous amount of sex appeal. It is a great story anytime you want a little romance and humor. It's a feel good book that doesn't over do it.
Rating: Summary: Quality work/ quality writer Review: I highly recommend this book and any other by LJ Maas. This author is a refreshing voice in the market who provides original story lines and well developed characters. I don't know LJ and I have no personal interest in boosting or bashing her. I just really like her writing. She isn't a formula writer. Each of her books is very different and that's what makes her so talented. In Rebecca's Cove, we find two main characters who will either learn to love each other or kill one another. Their struggle is frustrating and fun. In addition to becoming attached to BJ and Hobie, I enjoyed the well-developed secondary characters as their interaction with these women added depth to the stories and gave our girls deeper personalities. If you want to read an original, well-written story with emotion and depth, definitely read Rebecca's Cove.
Rating: Summary: * Amazing!!!!!!!!! * Review: I LOVED this book!! It was *SO* funny! L J Maas is my all-time favorite author. If you haven't read her other books (some faves of mine include: Meridio's Daughter and None So blind) be sure read them!!! This book is not only a cute love story, but it is very hilarious and a great read!! It is a book you will want to read over again! I have read it 6 times!!!! : )
Rating: Summary: Rebecca's Cove Review: I thoroughly enjoyed Rebecca's Cove.It is a book that is not only humorous but has great sensitivity in it. The story itself is of a bizarre nature but you will not only love the story but will enjoy all of the unique characters that LJ has written. LJ is an excellent author and once you have read Rebecca's Cove I am sure that you will want to read all of her other books.
Rating: Summary: Womderful romance Review: OMG I love this book. I could not put it down and finished it in one day. Both womyn's characters are believable. Their relationship is stormy, beautiful, romantic.... If you looking for humor and romance you are in for a hurt treat: this book kept me in laughing tears entire time.
Rating: Summary: Rebecca's Cove GREAT READ !! Review: Rebeccas Cove was a great read with some really strong characters. I have just recently been introduced to this author and I have found her writng style to be amazing and talented. Every book I read of LJ's I want a sequel. The woymn in her stories are smart, strong, and are able to reveal their weak side too. I am an avid reader and have read most of her books in the past month. Her stories are so deep that once I begin I can't put them down usually finish them in a weekend or a few days. Thank you LJ for your talent!
Rating: Summary: reminiscent of screwball comedy/romances Review: This book had me chuckling with its light screwball comedy/romance flavor. Watching big city writer B. J. fall apart both physically and emotionally on the quirky island of Ana Lia while trying to deny her growing interest in the local vet, Hobie Lynn, is a series of comedy of errors. Before B. J. knows it not only is she mellowed by the island, but also by its inhabitants and she comes to appreciate its allure that her grandmother has known for years.
Rating: Summary: This is what it's all about Review: This is what I expect when reading a first rate lesbian fiction. L J Maas has written a very clever, funny book that sizzles in all the right places. I found her characters very delightful, and Baylor's stubbornness just had me laughing my pants off. The chemistry between the two main leads was great....fire and ice, just like the book says. Overall, a very good storyline with strong, structured character development. Definitely worth the money!
Rating: Summary: Approach is somewhat uncommon, humor seems forced. Review: Though Maas's approach at transporting you to the location of a mystifying cove where some really weird, off the wall characters reside and uncommon occurrences materialize, is to some degree skillful accomplished, but you are unfortunately left feeling to some extent confused and a little disorientated with the many happenings and fusion of the various characters. All these multiphase and numerous incidences, such as tarot readings, imiginary animals,or covens among the elite of the cove, along with the uncommon characterizations of BJ, Hobie, Baylor and Rebecca , which are not typically an unpleasant or objectionable occurrence, did however, become a little much at times, and I found myself backing up and rereading passages to see if I had missed something. Maas's effort at humor throughout does come over as being somewhat forced, but definitely does help take some of the rough edges off the storyline and steer the tale forward to a successful end. Not ever having read anything by this author before, but after reading the critical and negative reviews of this novel previously, I wanted to see for myself why the grave comments were placed on this novel, so I purchased this book, along with seven others a little over a month ago and finally got around to reading this, Rebecca's Cove, which is the second book of that purchase. When I came back to place my review on the book, I found that all the unenthusiastic reviews had been removed and only some elaborate, raving notices were allowed to remain on the site. I found this to be very disheartening, and discouraging, for it was only because of those critical reviews that I bought this book in the first place. As I view most books from a film adaptation perspective, I wouldn't be inclined to pursue that course with this novel, not in its present presentation. That is not to say that I won't purchase or read anything else by this author, for I have already ordered Meridio's Daughter. Perhaps humor isn't this author's forte, and some darker thoughts might very well be where her/his talent is best. Neither does this mean that I disliked this book, or that I consider it unfavorably written, but I definitely don't consider it a four or five star effort either.
