Rating: Summary: LIKE A HOT KNIFE THROUGH BUTTER. Review: This book was written in 1941, and deals with homosexuality as well as infidelity in the military. Now being a former Marine and I know what that is like. That alone was enough to make me read it, and I was suprised as to how tastfully it was done. I loved the characters McCullers created and how she was short and to the point with there feelings. A quick read and a ...honest one at that. Very honest about gay supressed passions. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Not her best Review: While I'm a Carson McCullers fan from way back, this is not her best work. I'll still give it five stars as it's a McCullers work and probably miles ahead of most other writing on the market, but it can't compare with THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER. My guess is that she put so much into HEART that she just ran out of steam. And some of REFLECTIONS is just borderline "sick." Gothic is one thing, but one scene was just too much to take. Her other work BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE is, in my opinion, better than this one. Also recommended: McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD--A Tour of Southern Homes and Gardens
