Review: This is a wonderfully wide-ranging and learned exploration of the history of life-writing. Olney's style is always lucid, elegant, and patient; he reads subtly and well, teasing meaning out of passages in Augustine, Rousseau, and Beckett that you might have thought were tapped out by now.
