Summary: Spanglish is a culture
Review: After reading the reviews, I felt that I must express my opinion. I am originally from peru born and raise. I grew up speaking proper dictionary spanish. I have been leaving in the US for more than 8 years and went to High School here and I attend a university here too. I beleive that whoever thinks that spanglish is broken spanish he/she is wrong. Like you I thought so at the beginning until I become part of the cultural latina tan rica de este pais. Hablar español, o castellano like some people still call it is nice but to be spanglish is better. Because it is who we really are white poeple do not accept us as fully americans and our own people (in our native countries) do not see from there either, porque estamos muy agringados or muy gueritos like some say.

Being spanglish is being bicultural, meaning arroz con gandules, taquicos de pollo, orchata, fajitas, mc donalds, burger king. Being spanglish is enjoying salsa, hip pop, banda y rancheras and knowing that like us everydoby wants to be because we are special people.

Being Latino, being spanglish is living and experiencing what life in this country is and how our culture has make this country so strong because in bush wants to learn spanish now, como la vez :)

So dont dizz my gente who speak espanol y tambien english, tomalo con take it easy and realize that being spanglish is not a disrespenting our origens, si no es estar orgullosos de que sos bilingues y biculturales...I love being spanglish

I am going to read this book now...

Soy estadounidense pero siempre he tenido amigos hispanos y he disfrutado la cultural hispana.

Summary: A brilliant book by a brilliant Hispanic news anchor!
Review: Jorge Ramos, the well respected news anchorman for Univision, the Spanish-speaking channel in the United States, has written an excellent book about his thorough research on immigration -- including well thought out views on the Elian case -- throughout his long career as a journalist. He uses a no-holds-barred approach to his writing and sends the message across without sugar-coating the events -- like a true newsman.

I look up to brilliant journalists to improve or critique my own career, and I have been watching Ramos as a presenter for the world evening news on Univision since I was a little girl. I looked forward to reading this book and I am glad I did. La Otra Cara de America (The Other Side of America) should have been translated in English so it could have been appreciated by everyone in this country. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Los espejos de America

Summary: This is not about "good" Spanish
Review: My contrary opinion is that this book has nothing to do with "Spanglish". "Eff" the majority view of those who worry more about what constitutes "good" Spanish than about the people, children of immigrants, who are speaking "bad" Spanish. This book about is about enduring life as an illegal immigrant--that is the point. It has made me appreciate the tribulations encountered by my own family, who crossed the border in 1910. This book has made me appreciate, more, the hard working people of dubious status that I am privileged to encounter, almost every day. I am still reading the book [a library copy] but, because I *must* have my own copy, I will be ordering it. That's my testimony. Forgive my English; it's my "best" language; I am the child of immigrants.

Summary: Sr. Ramos hace el ridículo. Qué barbaridad!
Review: This is a great book, where I not only saw myself, a 3rd generation American of Mexican heritage, but my friends and la comunidad I work with. The stories are so true, just change the names, and they could apply to many others. this is "Must" for all Americans. Jorge did it again, great writer. As I read, I hear his voice, as he writes as he speaks, with eloquance and sincerity.
