Rating: Summary: A slight disappointment... Review: As an avid reader of Amanda Garretts previous sorties I found this too be somewhat lacking. Or perhaps it had that little bit too much. The long-winded telling of the backstory, which although necessary given the relative obscurity of the area, seemed to me to take away from the book more than to add to it. If they had been slightly briefer this book would be up there with the first two, and now Target Lock, as it is it doesn't quite make it. It is an enjoyable read, but I do miss the Duke, but many of the new characters of the SeaFighters help to make up for this. I loved the Little Pigs Logo/Beret!
Rating: Summary: Another Great Ready by James H. Cobb!! Review: Camped on shore while the Cunningham under goes repair from the battle damaged gathered in "Sea Strike," Amanda Garret is given a new and dangerous challenge. The Ivory Coast of Africa is on fire once again as a man with a vision for the future takes matters into his own hands. He is a man who wants to help the people of Africa but he at the same time wants to do so through the conquest of multiple countries. The UN decides to step in to do something about it. America's answer to that call is the Sea Fighters and Amanda Garrett. Away from the terrifying fire power of her destroyer Garrett has to depend on new and untested weapon systems and the learning curve just turned deadly. Mr. Cobb's third Amanda Garrett Novel is a Smashing Success!!!
Rating: Summary: Amanda's a fightin' man's fantasy! Review: I glommed onto this guy with the first book he wrote by sheer luck. I was just browsing in the bookstore, read the first page, and bought the book, hoping. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed that book, loved the second, picked up WEST ON 66 along the way. I realized with the third in the Amanda Garrett series that this guy is getting better and better. I can't wait for the next one, but contain myself. I want it written well, too. Someone stole my WEST ON 66 (hardback, too) and I had to rebuy it. Mr. Cobb's books are on my cozy reread list along with Miller and Lee's and Weber's. Keep up the good work ! A lot of us really appreciate a good book that holds our interest.
Rating: Summary: Daves Review Review: I had an excelent read with Sea Fighter as I have with all of this series of Mr. Cobbs Adventures. I like many, wait for the paper back since I am not a true collector, but I check the web for the latest addition to the series, and keep them for a second read. I enjoyed the new addition to Amanda Garretts personal life, that was a great touch introducing another love interest or possible love interest to the series. I hope there are many more additions to the series. I also am a fan of Stephen Coonts, if you guys are not friends you should be, I would enjoy seeing and reading a colaborations of my two favorite Authors. One can hope. I do have one question concerning the Flotilla, shouldn't they have been moored around a single anchor point? I was on the USS Ranger during the Vietnam Era, a very large vessel. The only time we anchored was in Honk Kong Harbor and used single point mooring system, we moved with incoming and outgoing tides and changes in wind direction. I enjoyed the Storm action and the heroism, but thought the mooring was odd. Look forward to a comment on this. P.S. SeaArk makes a great Green Water boat, like the River Gunboats of the Vietnam Era. Also, would love to see something about Rail Guns in upcoming additions to the series. (I'm a fan, not a Critic)
Rating: Summary: Can't get enough of Cobb! Review: I've read every installment of Cobb's "Amanda Garrett" series and I find them incredibly fascinating, engaging, and I can't wait to see a movie based on one of these! For the woman who loves combat and/or action genre, his books have all of that AND a fantastic female role model! I believe Sea Strike to be the best so far. Great dialogue -- variety of colorful characters -- and a very realistic, unpredictable plot.
Rating: Summary: Gripping Stuff Review: In this third Amanda Garrett novel, Mr Cobb has improved on an already very good series. Garrett leaves the confines of her ship and leads a UN Force (with limited resources) that is trying to stabalize and protect bits of Africa from an intelligent and wily African dictator. This is strong on both characterisation and action. I was pleased that Garrett's boyfriend was not much involved as it helped avoid all the clingy lovey stuff. The introduction of fighting hovercrafts was certainly different and the use of them plus a small corps of marines in a tactical game of chess was very absorbing. I read this on the back of the latest Patrick Robinson and it was like a breath of fresh air. This was not well publicized over here in the UK, but I am very glad I kept looking. When's the next one Mr Cobb?
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Summer Read! Review: james Cobb hits home again with his latest installment of Commander (now Captain) Amanda Garrett. This time Cobb takes us to the Dark Continent of Africa, which is currently embroiled in their latest civil war. Sadly the USS Cunningham only appears breifly in a moving "changing of the guard" scene which i thought was one of the book's best moments. Captain Garrett is given command of the experimental hovercrafts known as the Sea Fighers, and procedes to wage a Brown Water war that was very exciting to read. The novel reads quickly, and the characters I felt were well written, and very humanistic. Cobb has always had a little problem with getting to cliche when it came to the relationship of the CO, and her lover, chief Helo pilot Vince Arkady, and thankfully Arkady isn't one of Sea Fighter's major players. The action sequences are very good, and the thought, and basis behind the combat hovercrafts seemed new, and innovative. The techno-speak of Sea Fighter is just enough to make you think that you are there, without making you feel like you should have joined the Service to be able to read it. Thank God for the glossary though when you get lost! I loved it, buy it, and stay tuned for his next book entitled Sea Scourge! keep it up Jim!
Rating: Summary: Last of a Trilogy? Review: Most times with sequels, silence is best. However, I think Cobb makes an exception with Amanda Garrett et. al. I often read further into a series and wish the author had just killed the hero(ine) as opposed to miring them into mindless drivel. This time his third offering was my favorite. Some readers may disaggree because Cobb does sink to new depths I find entertaining. For example, in this one his use of movie quotes in the dialog may not be universally appealing. For me these examples were embarressing, laugh out loud, moments that kept me turning pages wanting more. I may send this one to a friend with an equally bizarre sense of humor and bravada, knowing that Cobb's 3rd adventure may be the first one to read, creating a curiosity about the 'prequels'.
Rating: Summary: GREAT MILITARY READ Review: This is the 3rd of James H. Cobb's books that I have read and all of them give you the same things -- action, information and enough history to make it all make sense. If you really enjoy Tom Clancy or if you think his books are too technical -- you will enjoy James H. Cobb!
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: This was the first book I read by James Cobb.It was a little slow but when the action started you won't be able to put this book down. James Cobb brings each charactor alive and you feel like your actually on the mission. If the navy was smart they may want to speak to him about some of his tactics.
