Rating: Summary: Classic of the classics Review: I had to read a book for my humanities class, and I pick Dumas' Camelias. The reason why I picked this book was that I read a Japanese comic book which has a couple scene of the story. At first, I was very worried about that I might not finish the book on time, because it usually takes me 10 minutes to read a page of a love story. Also I used to think that love story is boring and long, I just hate it when the author is writing a long passage and still didn't get to the point. Although this book is still long (at least for me it is long), and the author wrote some long passage and still didn't get to the point, but while I was reading this book I always want to know what happen next to Marguerite and Armand. The love between Marguerite and Armand, and how one person is willing to sacrifice for other just amaze me. It is the best love story that I ever know. In fact, after I read this book, I watched the movie Titanic; and I don't even think the story of Titanic is romantic compare to Camelias. It is really a great love story, who ever is in love, or was in love, or even not in love should read this book. The way the author wrote this book amaze me, too. It makes me feel like the author is sitting beside me, and telling me the story. Although the author is kind of jumping around between the "author" and Armand, I mean you might get a little bit confuse about is it the author telling the story or Armand. Overall, I recommend every single person who knows love, or want to know love to read this book. You will find the true love in this book.
Rating: Summary: Can't get Garbo/Taylor version out of my mind Review: I loved the movie "Camille" so much I just had to finally read "La Dame aux Camelias". The book is very good, but I must admit that the 1937 classic motion picture had me picturing Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor all through the novel. As I said, the novel is very good, but I have to say what is not usually said: the film of 1937 is better. It is very hard not to picture Garbo and Taylor as the perfect Marguerite and Armand.
Rating: Summary: A great novel Review: I read this novel for an assignment in my Sophomore Honors English class. While I had a negative opinion when I started reading, I later found that I could not put the book down. It was one of the first works ever written in a truly realistic style. I liked this realistic style as opposed to the romanticism exhibited in earlier works. In closing, read this book, it is much better than you may imagine it to be.
Rating: Summary: Hey - it's in French! Review: I was surprised to get this paperback in French, but I resurrected my high school French and read it. It started out to be one of the best books I'd ever read, but 2/3 of the way through, it started to lag tremendously. The love story just got too unbelievable in the end.
Rating: Summary: la dame aux camélias, belle oeuvre! Review: I've read the book as a school reading. The story is good, and we can see how was the life in this époque. the story is about a young man armand duval who fall in love with a courtesan, they loved each other but it was impossible. I think that armand is little bit hysterical, and it's boring because he's always crying. I recommend to read the theatre piece too

Rating: Summary: A True Love Story Review: La dama aux Camelias is Marguerite Gaultier, one of the most desirable courtesans in Paris with a very expensive taste. This is a sad love story of her affair with Armand Duval, a man that could not satisfy her demands for luxury but who could fulfill her need for being love and love but life is a too complicated of a matter. This novel is based on a true love story from Duma's life and in this edition of the book you could find quite some good links between the story and the events in real life of Alexandre, fils
Rating: Summary: a classic Review: La Dame Aux Camielias is a book that reaches into your heart and wraps a blanket around it. You learn a lot about the characters and you can't help but to imagine the story and the romance in your head. Although the first few pages may be difficult to overcome, the rest makes up for it.
Rating: Summary: A great story of love told in wonderful language Review: Probably one of the most romantic love stories ever told, La Dame aux Camélias describes the love between a young man and a "prostitute", as we would call her today. Quite against her will, Marguérite falls in love and even gives up her profession for Armand. Still, in the eyes of society, represented by Armand's father, she remains a prostitute. Old Duval demands that Marguérite leave her one and only love. Only then she reveals to her lover's father that this first love is definitely going to be her last... absolutely heart-breaking, marvellous language, one of the finest works of literature ever written. Highgly recommendable!!!!! The only book that ever made me cry.
Rating: Summary: Best Book I've Read In A Long Time! Review: This book was absolutely wonderful. At first I was worried because most of the time when I read a French book in translation, it seems lacking. This one definately was NOT lacking! David Coward did an excellent job of translating the book. The characters were definately believable, from the tragic Marguerite and Armand, to Monsieur Duval and Prudence. This book will capture anyone's imagination. I read this book in under 2 hours, I could not but it down. The story is exceptionally well crafted and what really makes it interesting was that it was based on a true story with Alexandre Dumas, fils, and Marie Duplessis, a popular courtesan in Paris at the time. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves romance and anyone who is interested in the events of France's past.
