Rating: Summary: A hilarious diary of an English Language teacher in Italy Review: This is a delightful and very perceptive novel written in quasi-diary form about the experiences of an English language teacher in Pandoro (otherwise known as Verona!) Italian bureaucracy, life styles, foibles, sex, pretensions, frustrations and joys are all sharply delineated in concise and scintillating prose. Yet there is sentiment and drama too and the lasting impression is not quite the comedy much of the book evokes. Read it even if you don't intend to teach English in Italy. It'll tell you more about contemporary Italian life than most other things you'll come across and the style's an absolute treat. In the end, of course, Italy comes out on top. How could such an extraordinary country do otherwise?
