Rating: Summary: Blackbirds and Butterflies Review: Bili Morrow Shelburne's first novel, Blackbirds and Butterflies, chronicles a summer in the life of Jesse Wheeler in a small rural Georgia town in the summer of 1959.
Jesse is faced with the antics of the 'town bullies' and problems at the family farm. One of the strengths of this new novel is the author's portrayal of the main as well as the minor characters that she artistically weaves into Jesse's life while depicting the close knit society of a small southern town.
The author skillfully keeps the story moving along as she intertwines the characters and the episodes into a suspenseful and moving tale about a young boy who is forced into adulthood in the course of one summer. I highly recommend this novel. It is a real page turner and a great read.
